Guillaume Brunier, the producer of Killer Freaks from Outer Space believes the Wii U’s controller makes turning easier in an FPS. The ideas is that you can turn 180 degrees in the physical world and because the controller has a screen you can shoot the bad guys who were behind you. This is how Brunier explains it:

We’ve used the accelerometer feature. If you move very fast the game will know and adjust movement speed. Those familiar with FPSes know how difficult it is to go around 180 degrees. With these new controls it’s a thing of the past.

This just sounds clunky though. There’s that initial “cool” factor I guess. But for the most part I think it’d break the immersion that less intrusive controls can provide. It’s the subtler uses for the controller that will make it the most useful.

I love the idea. but in the demo of killer freaks at e3, the guy was getting his ass kicked by the ‘killer freaks’, so i dont now if the controls are pretty sluggish or he just sucks. imo i think the guy sucked.

Yh me too lol, and you will probably have the option du play in the traditional fps way.

yea i saw the guy playing with classic pro, so wiimote and nunchuck can be there. variety is the spice of life my friend.

killer freaks seems like such a crap game..

That’s cool and all, but I REALLY hope most FPS on Wii U have the WiiMote as an option. That controller was great for FPS, see Metroid Prime.

I can only imagine your arms bothering you after trying to play this way for a certain amount of time since you have to hold the controller up

I think it will depend on the type of shooter we’re dealing with.

I think something like a new Metroid Prime game, the easier turning would be awesome. A shooter like Metroid Prime is not a game that particularly deals with fine accuracy in shooter. It’s about blowing aliens up with a charging beam cannon while in an awesome suit with cool visors (which also could use the Wii U screen). We could have more enemies to deal with to compensate for the easier maneuverability. I think that’d own.

Though for some games, like say a Battlefield 3, it wouldn’t work so well, because part of the game’s intensity IS your sharpshooting and lightning-quick reflex skills.

I say this feature will be useful for some games, and gimmicky for others. I can already smell Ubisoft’s over-usage this feature. This Killer Freaks game is already looking like one of those kinds of games to me. It’s a cheap launch title game, and it’s a game I hope people don’t get the wrong impression of the Wii U from seeing it at launch.

I also think it’s a nice feature to have as an option. Like, I could either just use the circle pads for long-term usage, and throw a quick turn to the right or left for those unexpected surprises. Might be nice–if people use the power right.

adrenaline i guess would help you.

I don’t really like the look of this game xP
    it just looks like………Ubisoftish

    It worked for OoT3D.

Unfortunately, the Sony/Microsoft fanboys will immediately take a game like that and use it to bash the Wii U by saying it will have 3rd party support but crap games; shovelware. :(

But lets not forget, you ARE supposed to take breaks every 30-60 minutes. Perhaps these new control schemes will actually force people to do so.

Smh… its still in developmental and its one of the only games we’ve seen from the wiiU, trust me what we saw at e3 WAS NOT a final product. It can only get better with time. I don’t care about this game ubisoft just needs to get me my brand new Assassins Creed.

If you watch closely you can see that when he moves the game moves pretty much lag free, he’s just a mega n00b. When he’s talking he’s all jittery, probably because he’s worried that everyone’s about to see how crap he is.

  • Johnny

Well from such early development we can see that the graphics easily match that of a finished PS3/360 game, so it just proves that the Wii U is going to be much better.

The little Killer freaks sort of look like Rabbids.
