When asked if he could “hint if the Wii U will be able to run Unreal Engine 4″, Geoff Keighley responded:

No, at GDC Mike Capps said Wii-U will be Unreal Engine 3.

And while I may simply be in denial, I’m not sure how much this confirms. Because, while Keighley recently filmed a feature about Unreal Engine 4 for Spike TV, maybe the announcement for the engine on the Wii U will come at Ninitendo’s press conference? It might be the sort of announcement they want to keep under-wraps.

What do you think though? Is this the definitive “no” we’ve been dreading? Or are you keeping hope alive?

Update: After reading Keighley’s comment, the folks at CVG contacted Epic Games. Their response?

[The company] has not confirmed platforms for Unreal Engine 4 beyond PC.

Or basically, there’s still hope. Probably. That’s how I’m taking it, at least.

  • Balcan

We’ll see… Wii U has improved since the GDC so i think we all know next week for sure.
But, yes… i hope for it.

  • StarTropics

At GDC Epic also said that Unreal Engine 3 is what developers should stick with for Next Gen Launch games

  • Tyson

It’d be nice if it comes but at the end of the end of the day I don’t care too much.

    • anonymous

at the end of the end of the day? lol

    • antiform47

I dont get whats so funny?

  • XypherCode

Quoting what I said on CVG w/ the same news article:
He said the console will run UE3. He didn’t say it will ONLY run UE3. We’ll just have to wait and see perhaps at E3 or an official statement from Epic that it WON’T run UE4. Heck we still don’t know how powerful Wii U is until E3. Just remember majority of named developers already said that Wii U has impressive graphical capabilities. Of course that doesn’t justify it can really run the new engine but let’s not jump the gun. There’s only a week away till E3 and hopefully we’ll learn something. And this is Nintendo we’re talking about. Great content comes first before graphics

  • Dmt4030

Unreal Engine 3 will only be on pc

    • uPadWatcher

From what we have already known, Unreal Engine 3 is already on consoles.

    • Wildman

Unreal Engine 4 is only announced for PC right now.
We shall find out if it comes to Wii U in 7 days.

  • Zyph

I don’t like Geoff. He bombards all he interviews w/ questions and doesn’t let them finish what they’re saying. Like his 2 interviews w/ Reggie. Reggie raised his voice to Geoff in some parts.

    Back to topic…
Just wait nothing is confirmed yet :D

  • Naner

I still think it sounds like “No, I can’t give a hint.”

  • Adrien

Well I always repeat myself but if the UE4 does not run on the Wii U, I’m not sure about buying the Wii U !

I don’t want the same again as it is for the Wii.
Do not understand me wrong. I love the Wii BUT all the other good games are only develloped for xbox or ps3 beacause of, everybody knows it, the power of the Wii.
And if they do the same with the Wii U it will be without me.. I don’t need another console which is underpowered and left beside again.

But I still hope that they only want to surprise us..
Please Nintendo don’t be stupid, please..

    • jobro

Even if UE4 wont be on Wii U , theres still hope.I mean , look at games like Aliens or Tom Clancys or whatever…Theay all come to Wii U.Its a lot of time till next XBox / PS launches and UE4 only on PC for a long time would be shit,BUT u cant compare the graphics different fromm wii to PS3/Xbox with the one from Wii U to these to or their succesors…Wii just had no Graphics…1080 p on wii u shouldnt be topped ;)

    • Truth

This one time I too agree with you. I am Nintendo to the core but will not support the Wii U if xbox720 and PS4 get it. This means my 3DS will be my only Nintendo 8th Gen system. 1/2 of Nintendo’s customers won’t buy the Wii U if we are left with little power. Or Nintendo needs to listen to us their true supporters.

  • brainiac1515

ok i really dont want to sound fanboyish but computers do have an advantage as far as tech goes so maybe consoles aren’t ready yet and most likely this will be a crysis 2 thing
(and this is my 1st time back on the site for a while)

what is it anyway but i know everyone wants the Wii U to have it :P

At the rate it’s going, it seems that not even the new xbox or ps3 will be able to run it. Most people are saying even most PC’s wont be able to run it either.

    • jobro

Well, thats how to gain money-Best awesome graphics , 10 people in the whole world able to use it xD

  • Trulaw

I think that GDC was before the new dev kits and Geoff Keighley may have misinterpreted what Mike Capps was saying.

    • D2K

He didn’t misinterpret. He purposefully tried to bash Nintendo. That’s what he does to amuse himself.

  • Flip

Really, I don’t care, but I still wish it will come as many publishers and developers would get stick on the next PlayStation/XBox if the Wii U don’t get enough power…

  • larsberg

    EPIC called BS on this

    http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1401272/epic_unreal_engine_4_platforms_unconfirmed_beyond_pc.html

Geoff Keighley is just bashing Nintendo, as usual.

  • MM-Royalninja

I cant comment on the 3dsblog ! HHHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!!

  • D2K

It’s pretty obvious that with Epic having their own unveil of Unreal Engine 4 that they want to keep the systems using engine under wraps until their presentation. People with brains can understand this.

    People ask yourself these questions.

    1. Why would Sony and Microsoft allow Epic to announce support for systems they have not announced themselves yet?

    2. Why would Epic choose to have a presentation of their own at E3 and give a big portion away for free by announcing all the companies that engine will support before the show? There would be no reason to tune into their presentation. Undoubtedly there will be plenty off footage available on a plethora of web sites after the show is over. Plus, game developers already saw what the engine is capable of.

    3. Why would Epic come out and openly praise the Wii U, have yet to say one negative thing about it, have a VP whom says that “he will be shocked if the Wii U doesn’t do well” and then turn around and have the company lambaste Sony and Microsoft for not pushing the PS4 and 720 as far as THEY want them to. If they are okay (even happy) with the Wii U specs and upset with the PS4 and 720 can do it either means that Nintendo has found a way to push UE3 further than even they can (and remember that the Zelda HD tech demo was said to not be able to run on the PS3 and 360 yet it only used 10% of the Wii U’s power and Mark Rein stated that they could do even more with the demo with UE3 yet, let alone UE4) or, the Wii U does run Unreal Engine 4 as been already suggested NUMEROUS TIMES.

The most probable explanation is that Epic probably expected the 720 and PS4 to run UE4 at a much ‘higher’ level than the Wii U can and because both companies have decided to go cheaper they are upset that people won’t get to see what the UE4 engine can do for several years.

Or, it could be that it does not support UE4, but because of what they have seen the Wii U can do with UE3, plus what the controller can do they realize that the Wii U is a cash-cow they cannot afford to miss being apart of. As I have said before elsewhere, Epic has a LOT of brown-nosing to do with Nintendo based on how they have treated Ninty in the past. That could be why we have heard so much positivity from Epic towards Nintendo in the past year.

Seriously though, does it even make any sense for the Wii U not to support Unreal Engine 4? It just totally contradicts everything Nintendo has done to this point and said that they are gonna do with the Wii U.

    • uPadWatcher

That was a very bold comment, D2K. I’m impressed.

    • http://wiiublog.com Jared

I love reading what D2K brings to the light. All of it make sense and is true the only one who would regect this is Geoff. The regginater said in a interview with Geoff and said “with this system there will be no excuse for 3rd party dev. when it comes to making games for the wii u” He also went on to say “We will take full advantage of 1080p and have the power to do that, U will see games that take advantage of a system with modern tech” So IDK what Geoff is talkin about. FIN.

I don’t think I’m that smart, but thanks. :) It’s just a matter of common sense. Those of us whom have it understand, and those who don’t understand it well..don’t have it.

It’s sad that so many people are determined to see Nintendo out of business at all costs.

  • http://wiiublog.com jokesta

man thats realy a let down… now am having doubts about getting the wii u…
because this means that the life span of the wii u will end by the time developers stop using the recent UE3 and Cry 2 meaning the wii u wont support future div x 12 meaning life span wii be cut short meaning no future cod or bf or cryteck or anything of third party games that we can see on next xbox and ps3…

    • gobbledegubber

Did you read where they said no console has got it yet just pc

    • Miks

Don’t give up yet, research more. I just found out that what this guy said, was BS, Epic themselves said that. Just read the largge comment, above yours, maybe it clears something up for you.

    • gobbledegubber

I my self will be for first time standing in line day one I’m that impressed and no sony or xbox men in black can change my mind

  • Mike

You have to remember at GDC, Nintendo only repeated to show the same Wii U they showed at E3 2011, an there have been multiple rumors that the. Wii U had been tweaked since then, and let’s be honest if you are buying a console for graphics, you are doing it wrong, if you want graphics get a PC. I for one could care less about the graphics of the Wii U as long as it is at least on par with current gen consoles, all I want is all my favorite Nintendo series in HD, and I think the Wii U will deliver that.

  • Miks

I think the Wii U will run it. Just think about it, Nintendo could release a beast at a affordable price, they have enough money from the Wii. + there was concept art leaked, of a potential Metroid game. You may ask, what does that have to do with UE4. Well, the person that made that concept art was Rick Kohler, he works for Epic. Remember the 360′s launch? The Wii U may be Epic’s next little console that they’ll probably help up.
    But that’s just my theorie.

  • Nintendo are LOSERS

I remember one post one guy from IGN said Nintendo fans again will play only Zelda and Mario till PS4 XBOX720 and PC have great games and great online network oh BTW and Metro Last Light not gonna be for WII U

    http://n4g.com/news/1006148/metro-last-light-no-longer-confirmed-as-a-definite-wii-u-title-says-thq

    • Miks

      WTF, are you doing here.
      1. IGN is full of shit, as a gamer you should know that.
      2. Nintendo has a lot more franchise than Zelda or Mario, shows just how much you know about the company that you supposedly ”hate”.
      3. The Wii U will have a online network, research a bit, before opening your second asshole, that you call mouth.
      4. Metro is just shoved further down the line.

    • uPadWatcher

You know something? Miks is right. The Wii U will have an online network… thanks in part to Electronic Arts. Welcome to the Nintendo Network. It’s gonna be better than what Nintendo had used many years ago. The best part about the N2– No Friendship Codes.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/dudesonicah22 Rummy

Didn’t a news say that Nintendo wiiu can run ue4…. just saying.

    • D2K

Yep. But I think there was a ‘name’ in there or a traceable source somewhere. As we both know, unless it is “anonymous” or” unnamed sources it is complete rubbish. :)

  • SEGAGIGA

Another F.U.D. which would only benefit the “NEXTBOX” and the “PSN”.

Only six more days to go!!! >.<

  • Truth

The company has told CVG that, while Unreal Engine 3 will expand support to the next Nintendo console, the company “has not confirmed platforms for Unreal Engine 4 beyond PC”.

  • http://wiiublog.com pops waka waka

off topic: Just to make sure there will be no Friend codes on the wii u right. and how do we know.

    • MikeJones

Nintendo have confirmed that through the new Nintendo Network, there will be user accounts, similar to that of the XBOX360 and the PS3. From this, we can assume that NN usernames can be given out and added similarly to existing profiles.

    • Wildman

Nintendo has stated that Nintendo Network will have personal accounts on Wii U. That will allow for multiple online users per system. Online profiles will no longer be system-based.

  • MikeJones

What does this prove? As you can all recall, GDC was in March. E3 is held in June. During that time, changes inevitably took place on the Wii U, so it isn’t unlikely that it can run it now. Still, we’ll have to see in 9 days!

    • MikeJones

      9 days, what am I saying? It’s 7 days!

  • BlueHawk007

it is still up in the air so I wouldn’t worry.

  • Andrew Boyle

Even if it doesn’t end up coming who cares. Nintendo’s first party engines are much better anyways, since they actually push the limits of the system. Eh sure it’d be nice if it came, but if it doesn’t its not a HUGE loss.

    • SleepyGuyy

While i agree with you 100% about Nintendo’s abilities with there consoles, not having Ue4 could pull many third party titles away from the WiiU in the future… making us feel a little left out… Then again, if I’m sad I can always play some of the best games in the industry..

Rumor: Obscure chinese site leaks ‘updated’ Wii U Specs.

Wii U- processor IBM PowerPC 32-bit, four IBM the Power7 core, 8 thread. Computing ability 200GFLOPS about.

Wii U-graphics system using AMD’s 40nm GPUs, Radeon HD 6800-based Barts core VLIW5 architecture, 1120 5D stream processors, the approximately 2TFLOPS of computing power.

    Wii U-Built-in 2GB shared memory , hard drive , integrated CD-ROM drive.

To Epic to put pressure on Nintendo to require Wii U-support DX11 and UE4 engine rumors, apparently Barts level 6800 series graphics cards can run UE4 1080p.

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc

Epic fail if iv’e ever seen it.
We don’t use raw computing power in normal computers/gadgets, but in super computers is nessary to show the full power.
Why would a graphics chip have TWO TERA FLOPS while the cpu has soo small?
      There is no hard drive
      AND NO CD ROM

    • StarTropics

HEY where’s the 768MB or 1GB of eDRAM? I actually am expecting it because IBM has been able to fit more than 1GB of eDRAM on a single chip

About the specs you posted, don’t you just LOVE it how anyone can make up specs for a console

    • SleepyGuyy

Oh yeah, the WiiU’s Quadcore and proccesor will be 32 bit… because Nintendo realized that the N64 was just too much. They want games that run less tasks. They want the delightful experience that gamers with Windows 7 32bit version get when playing highend physics & graphics games.

  • SleepyGuyy

You have to take into account the dumbass factor of Geoff Keighley. He’s no journalist, and context could be an issue
