In today’s “sort of interesting, but not that important” category comes the confirmation that the GPU for the Wii U begun its development back in June 2009. Or at least, it was “in some sort of development state”. But that does seem to just follow the regular schedule of Nintendo developing new hardware, so it’s not that surprising.

Quickly! Someone say something smaert about this! and also translate to simple english.

    • I AM DA BOMB

      i know whats a gpu

    • Craig E

I’m pretty sure the GPU is what produces the system’s graphics. While the CPU manages the general running of the console (fps, resolution, power, delegating jobs to other parts of the console in order to run games or programs).

  • WiiU

Then the games will look pretty good if it’s 2009 tech.

Many years ahead of PS3′s 2003-04
    Tech

The ps3 was out in 2006

PS if you’re the WiiU, then TELL US THE SPECS :( please you should know your guts.

      @Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

Even though it was released in 2006, doesn’t mean the tech was out then.

    • Deadly Scream

Tech would have already been developed before it launch lol!

      Massive overhaul

      GameCube graphics: 2001
      Wii graphics: 2001
      Wii U graphics: 2009

This is going to be fun. :)

    • StarTropics

Actually TurboPikachu Development of the GameCube’s GPU started in 1999

  • StarTropics

It’s a custom made Nintendo/AMD Radeon not a Radeon 4870. This guy had been working on it for a year and 10 months and it’s still probably being worked on.

    It’s a SoC GPU

  • http://blaaa josh with the truth

its like the randon 4870 but stronger the randon 4870 but the 4870 still literally blows the PS3 out of the water and makes and the Xbox look like toilet paper but keep in mind that the wiiu will use the 4870 if they have to but they are making something even stronger and this is not a rumor for your information

    • http://blaaa josh with the truth

this makes me look like a nerd :P

    • Herpicus

The radeon 4870 is a 100$ lower end gpu from from a few years ago. Sure, it a bit more powerful, but I don’t know how it will make the xbox 360 look like “toilet water”. It’s the type of gpu a 500$ retail pc would carry around, but as an integrated version.

  • XZAceNintendo

    Look guys. Ill explain this.

The rumored processor for the Wii U (HD 4870) was made in 2008. If this is to be believed, and if the processor was in development in 2009, the WiiU will be getting an even better processor than the 4870, which was enough to beat Xbox 720´s and PS4´s rumoured specs my friends :)

I wonder if Nintendo knew they were going to have that tablet screen controller thing back then… What with all the streaming mentioned, I assume so (I don’t really know what most of the other words mean… AHB-AHB? wtf?)
