Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U, has confirmed that “the game system itself is complete”. But this doesn’t mean the game is complete. Or is even close to completion. These are the basic foundations of the game that he’s talking about. And, as for his full quote:

The game system itself is complete, so we don’t want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it. However, I am thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience all the while keeping the usual frantic game play.

It’s nice that Nintendo is opening up about the game. I thought there was going to be dead-silence for a while longer, so it’s also nice that I was wrong.

i think what he mean is that there engine is done not the game itself.

  • xader

    want it now

    Yay! 1% COMPLETED!

    • MadCrain

I’d say 10%, because, making the “world” is the most important step, like in Zelda (sorry for the super nerdy refrence) when Din, Nayru and Farore make the Earth, Imagine…Din is it? Making the Red earth! what’s left is the laws (controls) and the life (characters) Damn! What a nice example! xDDD

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Omar-Ahmed/100002113873233 Omar Ahmed

Don’t get your hopes up! This game will take 4 years or 3 or….. a long time. :(

    • MadCrain

      Yeah I know :(

    • NintendoR0CK3T

You have the most liked comment! :p

The One and Only Omarsonic9 :P

  • pokemoneinstein

I think what he means is that past installments have already established the game’s “system,” rather than talking about completed work on this game.

    • Chris

      This.

  • DanDroid

    We’re getting Closer!!!

  • Bigpete849

Hooray! I need to see Mario and Sonic punching each other soon. In HD!!!!!

Trying to resist news on this game but i cant help it . Oh well ill see some gameplay at E3 2014 :(

    • BoyleVoices

I think we will see gameplay at the next E3.

    • Mo433

I think so too. I think 2014 will be the absolute latest this game will come out.

    • The Random Man

      I’d say early 2015. Remember Brawl’s launch? :/

    • Mo433

Yeah, but that was because of last minute delays. The game really was going to be a launch game for the Wii. The game will not take as long as you think. Why would it take 3 years for a game to be completed with development running smoothly. Smash Bros is one of Nintendo’s biggest titles, they put a lot of money into those games. And with all the developers together, it is no way the game will take 3 years without delay.

i dont get what they are even talking about. im just glad i can see samus’ butt again.

    • Envy

That’s just a distortion of pixels that you perceive as a butt.

“What if I told you that this world was all an illusion? Noting but lines of code in a computer.”

    • http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3204673/ GameManiac

That’s from “The Matrix”, isn’t it?

    • Tails the Foxhound

      You are correct, sir.

  • Megajacob

wait im confused. the 3d version wont be 3d? or is that the game system?

    • Tails the Foxhound

I think he means 3D in the sense of Tekken or Soul Calibur, not Stereoscopic 3D.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DanielGinoris Daniel Ginoris

so the 3DS version won’t have 3D? that’s kinda weird

    • ClassicHyperSonic

      They never said that.

    • NintendoR0CK3T

…and for some reason you have the most disliked comment… :/

  • Lunar Halo 24

Like you said, David, I love how they’re keeping us updated about how the game is going so far, instead of complete silence until they finally show it at E3.

    • http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3204673/ GameManiac

      Agreed.
Bit-by-bit news, coming to us every few days.

    • RockieOllie

Nah, I hated when they did that for brawl. The game looses it’s surprise when you discover it’s secrets. Remember the Dojo site? I heard also they are going to bring it back too.

That was also a nightmare for me, everyday I was tempted to go to the site and check. @_@

    • Lunar Halo 24

I guess I can see where you’re coming from, but I just like to see how far along in the process they are so we can get a sense of how much longer it’s going to take for the game to be finished. That’s just me, though.

    • RockieOllie

Yeah, heaven for you, hell for me. Im gonna have a hard time resisting new info on the game.

  • Doopliss

“Super Smash Bros. 4 is in development for Wii U and 3DS, with a release expected sometime in 2013.”

Why didn’t David add this part from IGN? 0_o

    • Mo433

I think he thinks the development is going to take longer than that. I don’t know.

    • csaw

Becuase thats just ign guessing. Considering the fact that the game barely started development 5 months ago and considering the fact that sakurai is a perfectionist, theres little to no chance it will be out by 2013.

  • Amtoj

I have an idea. All Nintendo characters for playable characters, and all 3rd parties as assist trophies and collectibles…

    • http://www.facebook.com/martin.kearney.104 Martin Kearney

How about some Third party characters can be as extra DLC?

  • NintendoR0CK3T

Wait… so the game is already finished!!?? 8O Woah that was quick!! 8l

    • Doopliss

      It;s not finished…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1581638598 Tylor Ray Gallagher

when he said 5 years on how long it well take was a exaggeration, put it this way if it were to really take 5 years to make the game they would already be announcing their next system (remember their is a new one ever 5 years)
so no 5 years to make the game? no, with the help of a second studio? take much less time. Nintendo did not go out of their way to add Namco they did not plan on making take even longer, they plan on it taking less time. further more they have said (which was pretty obvious) that Namco would only be doing back end work…so again if they have bin announced already as helping make the game. it means they are a LOT farther then we think. why would the back end company be announced at a point in which they wont even be working on the game.
if ubisoft can make a assassins creed game every year. then don’t think that it well take several years to make a fighting game made by 2 companies. still at earliest it well be holiday of next year…at earliest.

My anatomical structure has been prepared for this for a while now. I gaze upon the sky on high and I ponder, “How must must I long to engage in this foolery of the collaborative sort?” Alas, I shall continue in my awaiting for this form of entertainment wherein I frolic in hand-to-hand combat in characters of worlds beyon…yeah, I didn’t have my coffee this morning.

  • Mingy Jongo’s Brother

So does this mean like the game’s physics or engine or what?

  • StarTropics

I think he means the Wii U system has been finalized and they’re developing on the latest dev kit

  • NoTheMama

This game is gonna be Nintendo’s ammunition against the next consoles from Sony or Microsoft im willing to bet. This will launch in the same week as the next Xbox or Playstation, whoever drops first, ill bet $5 on it! Lol

  • Thatguywhoslappedyou

ok the Writing parts are only like 10-20 percent everything else is way more since graphics gameplay and such

  • MegaZoneEX

This game was announced pre maturely and i feel its being rushed develop wise. I want this game just like everyone else but trying not to hope on the “Hype train”

  • http://www.facebook.com/barry.mcnamara.7 Barry McNamara

I’m glad that it won’t be 3D with complicated controls. I remember some people speculating that Brawl would’ve been like that and I’m glad it wasn’t. Most 3D fighting games end up being really hard to control which takes the fun out of it. SSB is the best of the fighting genre!
