The first screenshots from Smash Bros. on the Wii U to be revealed at E3 2013

Satoru Iwata provided a quick update with regards to Smash Bros. on the Wii U at the recent Nintendo Direct broadcast. He said:

Smash Bros is a huge development undertaking and we need more time before it launches. Mr Sakurai told us that we have set the timing for the first screens at this year’s E3. Please wait for just a little longer.

I think if we’re lucky, we’ll have the game in our homes at the end of 2014.

    By the end of 2014? What in the world makes you think the game will take that long?

      How many times does it have to be reiterated? The game barely started development in March of 2012. Sakurai has said many times that the game will take longer than people expect. Brawl took several years and was delayed. This time the game will be on an HD console and 3D handheld. If you expect to have a qualitative Smash Bros, you’d better HOPE it releases at the end of 2014 or later.

      Brawl was shown at E3 in 2006 and was released 2 years later. So following this logic, on the Wii U it could possibly be released in 2015.

      yes but brawl had a longer dev time before it was reviled. But 2015 would probably be the earliest for the title. namco or no namco.

      lots of business, not so much programming. trademarks, copyrights, patents, contracts, offers, deals, figuring the best release date, play testing, lots of music (brawl had like 300), whatever. i dont know anything except programming my own games. which reminds me, if i wanted to i can make 3ds browser games and use all x,b,y,a buttons. but thats a different story.

    Well, if Brawl took 2 years to be released, then i think this one will too. I hope that’s the case. Let’s see what Sakurai haved prepared for us so far.

      True. They do have additional development help from Bandai with this game. Even though HD games take longer to make, developers do still develop games with an intended frame of about 2 years in mind. In fact, that’s largely why these games cost more–the additional hired help with production. So hopefully, we’ll see the game in early 2014.

      I wouldn’t be surprised if they add Pacman to the game, since he’s Namco Bandai’s mascot.

      Namco Bandai said they didn’t want to add any characters from their franchise. Maybe we might see a stage from them instead

      I never heard that… They did however address people asking about Tales of characters and they said if Sakurai would have it then sure.

      I think Nintendo held back last year so they could obliterate Sony and Microsoft this year since they’re rumored to be announcing their next gen consoles.

      They only held back their announcement of Retro Studios’ mystery game. Other than that, their E3 for that year was alright.

    Sometimes I wished I was never on this blog, cause when I was a person without knowing of this blog time went by faster for me for games to come out. But since I when the release date probally will be ( 2014 or 2015, probally 2015 ) its just gonna take forever…. I am going through pain and I hope u guys understand… 2 years? My birhtday was just 2 weeks ago ( I got minecraft :D ) Now ANOTHER 2 years. But I know I will get a wii u, some of my family member think its lame. But the wii u LOOKS amazing.

      I don’t really think we’ll get a SMT character. SMT hasn’t really made much of an appearance on Nintendo consoles anyway.

    Prediction:

    Between this, Mario Kart, a new 3D Mario game, updates on the new Zelda game, and Wind Waker HD (which has to be the most exciting Zelda remake of all time), not to mention whatever else Big N might have up their sleeves, Wii U is going to own E3 2013.

      Even a new PS4 and “NextBox” will face some challenge with these
      heavy-hitters from Nintendo. This game just might bring the most noise
      for Nintendo. New Super Smash Bros. games always fare well as a crowd
      favorite at E3.

      Take all the time you need, Sakurai. Awesomeness takes time to create.

      Add in whatever Retro is working on, and I say Sony and Microsoft have no chance against Nintendo at E3.

      Plus the Shin-Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem crossover, Monolith Soft’s new game, and Bayonetta 2. And that’s just the stuff that we know about for Wii U from first parties. We could see a surprise 3rd party exclusive that Nintendo is publishing, like we did with Bayonetta 2. And that’s just Wii U. We still don’t know ANYTHING about what they will show off for 3DS at E3.

    CRAAAAAAAAAAAAP!!!! Masahiro Sakurai is suffering from IRS and it’s is preventing him from working on a keyboard or mouse or even using a gamepad I guess this means the game is”delayed”. CRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAP!!!!! DX
