Mark Rein of Epic Games, when talking about Unreal Engine 4 and the Wii U, has said:

…I don’t think it’s our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable. We’ll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform.

And after all the teasing, that is a bummer.

BlackNMild2k1 of NeoGaf, one of the original sources of information in regards to Unreal Engine 4 on the Wii U has stood by their claims, re-iterating that Nintendo has tweaked their hardware to support the engine. It is still unclear if we’ll see anything at E3 2012, but at least the hope isn’t dead yet. *crosses fingers*

When asked if he could “hint if the Wii U will be able to run Unreal Engine 4″, Geoff Keighley responded:

No, at GDC Mike Capps said Wii-U will be Unreal Engine 3.

And while I may simply be in denial, I’m not sure how much this confirms. Because, while Keighley recently filmed a feature about Unreal Engine 4 for Spike TV, maybe the announcement for the engine on the Wii U will come at Ninitendo’s press conference? It might be the sort of announcement they want to keep under-wraps.

What do you think though? Is this the definitive “no” we’ve been dreading? Or are you keeping hope alive?

Update: After reading Keighley’s comment, the folks at CVG contacted Epic Games. Their response?

[The company] has not confirmed platforms for Unreal Engine 4 beyond PC.

Or basically, there’s still hope. Probably. That’s how I’m taking it, at least.

Geoff Keighley of Spike TV has announced that they “will be unveiling Unreal Engine 4 during E3 week on Spike”. We’re not sure if the engine will support the Wii U, but during the feature they will be “showing off the editor and a lot of the tech”, so there’ll be plenty of intrigue for those interested in game development.

Epic Games has shared the first look at the capabilities of Unreal Engine 4. It is not confirmed that this engine will be supported on the Wii U, but there have been hints that it might be on its way. That doesn’t mean games on the Wii U could look as good as the screenshots after the break, but they’d still look very nice.

(To clarify, this tech demo was shown to developers in March, but this is the first look for the public.)

A few days ago, there was a little less hope that Unreal Engine 4 would arrive on the Wii U. But that “little less hope” was based on my (probable) misinterpretation of a quote (as noted in the previous article). A new rumour has suggested that the engine will be arriving on the platform though, explaining that:

Nintendo tweaked the Wii U to make sure it can run UE4, which would explain the recent bump in specs and apparently Nintendo is still tweaking the hardware.

(That quote was from here.)

It’s all back-and-forth speculation, I know, but I have a good feeling about E3 2012. I think it’s going to be big, and the announcement of Unreal Engine 4 support for the Wii U would be a great addition to that.

We’re hoping the Wii U will run Unreal Engine 4. Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, however, has said that they’re “aiming very high” and “the intended platforms this is aimed at haven’t even been announced”. Now, obviously, the Wii U has been announced, which means Unreal Engine 4 isn’t one of these intended platforms. It doesn’t mean it won’t happen at all. The support for the Wii U may have been more of an after-thought. But it’s a layer of ambivalence that’s probably going to hang in the air until E3 2012 rolls around.

Update: As Bluewolf notes in the comments:

…his comment could of meant “we haven’t announced the intended platforms that will support UE4″

That makes a lot of sense. As per usual, I’ll be perfectly happy for my interpretation to be wrong.
