At this point, I’m not thinking Amazon is the most reliable source of information for the release date and price of the Wii U, but according to their updated product listing for the platform, the Wii U will be released on the 21st of December in Europe, and will cost €349.99. Previously, we have heard the Wii U could be “delayed” in Europe until December, but this date in particular feels too late, and the price feels too high. I think Amazon is just playing it safe with their details.

According to Shane Satterfield, the Editor-in-Chief at GameTrailers, the Wii U might cost $299 when it launches later this year. Here’s what he shared in an episode of “Invisible Walls”:

We’re going to assume that the Wii U is going to cost $299. And I have heard through certain channels that that is likely going to be the price of the system.

Fingers crossed.

This press release has been floating around. It states that the Wii U is “99% likely to go on sale in the UK for a sub-£250 Recommended Retail Price”. Of course, the more interesting story would be if this was somehow based on an actual source of information, but it’s not. The press release is from someone trying to market their site, but it blurs speculation into something more than speculation.

I won’t be surprised if the Wii U does cost less than £250. Just be wary of the way language is used. This story got a lot of air time and for no particular reason.

MCV UK is reporting that “one senior publisher confidently told [them] that the price” of the Wii U “will definitely be less than £249″. This would fall in line with other rumours, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was true.

Satoru Iwata has said in an interview that the Wii U will be priced “reasonably”, and that:

…the company will do everything its power to avoid the same mistakes made with the 3DS.

Based on what we know, $300 still seems like the most likely price point.

Amazon added a price of €399 to their listing for the Wii U on the French and German stores. Then, in the past few hours, the German listing dropped to €349. Just to be clear though, this is surely just speculation. There is no real need to pay any attention to this pricing. I suspect Amazon is just trying to get a few early preorders in and decided to lower the price a little because they figure there’s no chance it’ll cost more than €349.

A supposed document from Microsoft has revealed details about the Xbox 720. It’s unclear if the document itself is legitimate, but it was taken down from Scribd.com by a law-firm that has worked with Microsoft in the past. The document, however, “makes several assumptions about the Wii U”, “specifically claiming that the Wii U will cost around $249″. The question is, does Microsoft have inside information?

It’s in their best interests to know what the competition is doing, so I’m curious as to how much information is leaked between the big companies that never makes it to the press. What do you think?
