Aliens Colonial Marines Small

Randy Pitchford, the president of Gearbox, has told Joystiq that the Wii U’s GamePad is “the best controller Nintendo’s ever made for making an FPS,” and also “the best controller Nintendo has ever given us for playing hardcore games.” He explained that:

With the Wii U they (Nintendo) committed themselves to this promise. So the link is direct, fast and immediate. Things like SmartGlass and Vita, they appreciate the value of the promise so they’re making the promise. But they’re not in with such commitment.

…and:

Conceivably there’s things you can do on all three without negative impact but because of Nintendo’s commitment to it there are something’s that could work there that just wouldn’t work as well with SmartGlass or with the crossplay between PS3 and Vita.

For those new to the world of the Wii U, Gearbox is working on Aliens: Colonial Marines for the platform, so it’s great to know they consider it to be a solid setup for an FPS.

Brian Burleson of Gearbox has said in regards to Aliens: Colonial Marines that:

We’re imagining things – there’s a distinct possibility. We are making the game in such a way that could support certain possibilities, but nothing is certain so we have to leave lots of ground. I think when people finish playing the game, they’ll definitely want more. We’re not just tagging off the end of the game and saying, ‘That’s the end of the Aliens chronology for this sort of thing’.

Or, as he summarised with much fewer words, they “want to continue it”, and I expect that will happen. But while completely new content is always more exciting, at least this would be a sequel to a game that seems like it will have many interesting uses of the GamePad.

The folks at Gearbox, who are working on Aliens: Colonial Marines for the Wii U, have not held back with their praise for the platform, and they’ve shared even more in the latest issue of Nintendo Gamer. Randy Pitchford, for instance, has said that he “loves” the platform, and is:

…very excited about it because it gives us a path to realise some things that are more future-looking than we could if we were only on the current generation.

Then Brian Cozzens, the game’s art director said the game itself is “going to look awesome” (which, admittedly, does sound just a tad biased coming from him), and that:

…it’s unbelievable how many things that exist in the Aliens’ franchise actually work for that controller. It’s been a real treat, quite frankly, because the controller and the features of the system enable us to do things we can’t do with the other consoles.

Hype. Hype. Hype. Hype. Hype.

Chris Faylor of Gearbox has said that “the Wii U version [of Aliens: Colonial Marines] is not a port”, and suggested that we should “remove it from [our] vocabulary”. Based on what’s been said in the past, it’s clear that Gearbox is treating the version on the Wii U with a welcomed level of respect. They’re trying to make it stand on its own two feet. Or that’s the vibe I’m getting. We can only hope the reality matches the intention.

Randy Pitchford of Gearbox, aside from saying he is “really excited” about the platform and the work they’re doing on Aliens: Colonial Marines, has said that “Nintendo still has a lot to announce with their platform, and it’s not up to us to go ahead of them.” He also shared that:

There’s a lot that we can do with that screen. It’s a really cool system — it’s pretty powerful. I want to be careful, because I don’t want to risk any sensitive information that Nintendo’s not ready to share yet, but in our experience it’s a great system. I think it’s a really nice bridge to the next generation. I think people will be surprised. I don’t know off the top of my head how many of the specs they’ve released, so I want to be very careful not to jump the gun, but we’re very pleased with the hardware.

And as always, it’s nice to hear the positive reactions to the platform, given that it’s the doom and gloom that can receive the most attention.

Randy Pitchford of Gearbox, the company working on Aliens: Colonial Marines (which is confirmed for the Wii U), has shared plenty of praise for the Wii U in an interview, saying that the Wii U version of the game “has so much more to offer” than the other consoles, and that “no other platform can do what the Wii U can do”.

He says there’s “a lot of cool opportunities with that device that are going to make a very unique and compelling experience on that platform”, and that Gearbox has “given a lot of attention” to this.

He ends with:

I think it will not be too long [before] Nintendo opens up their kimono a little bit more about that platform and where it is going, we will be there right with them talking about how Aliens is using it.

And the game certainly has my attention, so let’s hope this day is not too far off.
