Dragon Quest X 3

The above image might sum up the facial expressions of Square Enix developers right now. With a new president and plan coming into the company, perhaps Square can rebound on its low sales of Dragon Quest X for the Wii U, which only sold 33,000 units in its first week of release in Japan. This may, however, be connected with the Wii version of the game, which was released last year. Perhaps those who already own the game on the Wii console simply didn’t see a reason to repurchase the game.

What do you think the reason for the game under-performing is?

Dragon Quest X 4

Square Enix announced the Japanese release date for Dragon Quest X today, set to be released on March 30th. No word on if there will be a western localization for either North America or Europe.

The game plays the same as the Wii release, but with enhanced graphics as well as the ability to play the game exclusively on the GamePad. The game will be sold initially at 6,980 yen (roughly €55/£48/$75) and includes a bonus ticket for 20 days of free online play.

Nintendo will also be releasing a Dragon Quest X bundle including a premium Wii U console, Dragon Quest X, a black Pro Controller, a prepaid card loaded with 1,000 yen (roughly €7/£6/$11), and five super health orbs. The bundle will set you back 42,000 yen (or roughly €334/£292/$453). Whether or not this bundle is a good purchase is entirely up to you, but with many other bundles being released around the same time, it will be quite a difficult decision for new Wii U buyers.

Dragon Quest X 3

Yuji Horii of Square Enix has revealed at Jump Festa in Japan that Dragon Quest X on the Wii U will featured a (mostly) orchestrated soundtrack. There will be some, non-orchestrated music, but it’s great to see an effort being made with the music. It can be an overlooked aspect of game design, but can also be so powerful when done well. The game itself is set to be released in Japan during Spring, 2013.
