Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem

Nintendo has announced that they’re working with Atlus to develop a game that brings the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem franchises together into a single RPG. There’s nothing we really know about it, but there’s a trailer after the break, and the confirmation of more collaborations like this in the future.

  • corleonis88

I´m not sure how I feel about this, since I don´t know a lot about shin megami tensei

    • boyonthemoon

shin megami tensei is another rpg from japan and its all about demons. you use them in battle like pokemon only you can fuse them and there are different types that are effective against other types. you can choose different paths in the game, one path is for god when you pretty much bring a 1000 year paradise to earth, another is for the devil where you bring anarchy and chaos to the earth, and the 3rd path is one where you destroy both god and the devil and let mankind do what they want(which pretty much would be chaos anyway but thats not how the game thinks it would be.) kind of a cool idea but ehhh idk about it… i definitely love fire emblem though. and they could do some cool stuff bringing the path system to the series.

    • corleonis88

thanks for the info. I hope this becomes an awesome game

What else can I say other than the fact that my gravatar’s expression is similar to my own right now.

    • Clockwerk Orange

you want to eat someones face?

    • Revolution5268

tbh i really don’t want to know lol

  • Iyxxl

This was the(second) most exciting news from the Nintendo Direct. :P

I can’t wait to play this because Fire Emblem is my favorite seris, and I really like Shin Megami Tensei, so this will be epical(yes, I know that’s a word). :P

  • Ice

Out of all the games at Nintendo Direct, Im most excited for this, mainly because I love Fire Emblem. But thats only because Zelda and Smash Bros. don’t have images yet. ;)

    • BlackJackIGN

There was images from Wind Waker HD….

    • Ichigo Kurosaki

They said Smash would have screenshots at E3. Plus we might be lucky enough to see even 10 secs of footage. That’s all i need to see to have a mini seizure.

  • rockytem

dude… that fire emblem song… gets me so fucking PUMPED

    • Tails the Foxhound

Yeah, it rustles my jimmies too. Every time.

    • Silent

”gets me so fucking PUMPED” Lol dude i had to stop for while because i was laughing so hard. Ok

  • Scorpio018

I love both franchises involved, and this news is something that both excites and terrifies me.

I will definitely be keeping both eyes on this one…don’t want it sneaking up on me. :P

  • Chris

    Why Fire Emblem? :(

SMT x Pokemon would be <3

    • Brian

      You’re a fucking idiot.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AJ.Fowl Andrew Chambers

I agree on not mixing pokemon and smt, but damn, you don’t have to be a dik. You need to stay off of the comments section in YouTube, I think its having a negative affect on you

    • Tecpedz94

LOL i know that comment reminds me of youtube so many rude people…

    • miiworldtoo

I agree with you there, Andrew. If they don’t have anything good to say then they should just shut it.

    • Silent

I agree. This is why we need moderation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/AJ.Fowl Andrew Chambers

Yeah, but that kinda kills free speech…

    • Silent

the right to freedom of speech has its limits. If you spam a person’s blog with negative things, then the right to freedom of speech stops.

    • Silent

Free speech cant go beyond other people’s rights.

    • Iyxxl

Because Fire Emblem is the greatest series known to man. XD
      Ah… Just kidding.
Well, at least I think it’s the greatest.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Considering Pokémon was developed as a softcore MegaTen Devil Summoner, yeah that is a good question.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Pokémon was developed more as an exaggeration of the popular hobby in Japan of bug-collecting, which the creator of the series used to do a lot as a kid growing up. Maybe that’s why among the first people you encounter battles with in the game are bug-collectors with Bug-type Pokemon.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Yeah I know all that already, but mechanically it’s built like MegaTen Devil Summoner* where you contract, train, and raise demons.

*I should note that I’m not 100% sure that this is the title of this particular game in the series. There’s a pretty good chance I’m wrong, but I’m too lazy to look it up. :v

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Perhaps. Though, given Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri’s age, he was probably far more influenced by Dragon Quest than Devil Summoner, which came about a few years later. Dragon Quest is a far bigger series in Japan (as you may know), and it pretty much started the whole catching and raising monsters as allies in battle (starting primitively in Dragon Quest IV for Famicom and done more notably in Dragon Quest V for Super Famicom).

In 1990, when Dragon Quest IV introduced a monster-catching system, Satoshi would’ve been 25, still earning his stripes in game development, and likely wildly-influenced by the popular Dragon Quest. You mix that with Satoshi’s childhood passion for catching bugs, and throw in how he wanted to use the Game Boy Game Link for trading monsters, and suddenly Pokémon is born.

[By the way, the title you're thinking of is "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner." ;) ]

    • Tails the Foxhound

I knew the general history but thanks for the indepth retrospective. Who says you can’t learn something from video games. Looks like I was wrong though, I thought Devil Summoner was older than Pokémon by more than that. It’s probably a safe bet that both of them were inspired by DQ IV and V, then huh?

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Prolly. Though, Satoshi probably had personal past experience of bug-catching to draw from and Dragon Quest probably further the concept along as a concept in later years when he went into game development. Not sure if the developers of Devil Summoner went out and captured demons. lol

    • miiworldtoo

hhmmm… it doesn’t fit with Pokemon really. Though I never played a Shin Megami Tensei game before, I heard good deal about it.

  • J. Severe

Fire Emblem is my favorite SRPG series and I’ve heard SMT is great, so I’m totally hyped for this. Came completely out of the blue, I don’t think anyone would have expected this in a million years. XP

  • miiworldtoo

    FE fans! Check it! If you look closely at the trailer, you’ll see Roy and Lilina among the other FE heroes. What does it mean? Are we gonna be getting some Roy love in that game? I really hope so, considering that his game never got released outside of Japan. ;_;

  • kevin Wr

yeah atlus was right “next to persona 5 we a working on a game with a partner that will suprise many fans” or so they said xd

  • Ichigo Kurosaki

The Shin Megami Tensei crossover was a nice touch. But anything Fire Emblem related for Wii U is all i’ve been wanting since Awakening was announced for 3ds. Glad FE is getting lots of love. And is it just me or does it seem like the Wii U is gonna be a must have system for RPG lovers??

    • Tails the Foxhound

Yeah, first it had no RPGs, now it’s suddenly got two must haves on the horizon. Now gimmie a Tales game Namco!

    • Ichigo Kurosaki

That’s all I want. A good ol Tales game in HD. Symphonia 1 and 2 were both good. And I think i’d rather have a brand new one rather than an HD remake. But seeing Emil and or Lloyd and the crew in HD would calm my soul.

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

Tales of Symphonia HD for WiiU would be so epic. Can agree more with you.

    • Tails the Foxhound

HD Symphonia might just give me a heart attack. Especially if they include some sort of prologue story with Kratos, Mithos, Yuan and Martel. Not so sure about Symphonia 2 though, if they fix it then we can talk.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Golden Sun: Mirror of Fate for the Wii U. Such a game and that title simply need to exist. Here’s hoping the Wii U continues to get more RPG love!

  • Darkmeister

Wow, imagine the Fire Emblem characters summoning demons like the Shin Megami Tensei ones. This is going to be sooooo EPIC!

  • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

I don’t really want Shin Megami Tensei in my beloved Fire Emblem. They’re not even much in the same neighborhood together as games, except that they’re both RPG. Fire Emblem has a certain air and classiness about itself that Shin Megami Tensei doesn’t, I feel. This is just a promotional stunt for Atlus more than an actually fitting idea.

I would’ve rather seen classic Shining Force franchise from Sega see a return to collaborate with Fire Emblem, since the two games sorta give somewhat similar fantasy turn-based tactical RPG vibe (and since Fire Emblem clearly inspired Shining Force, though they do differ)..

It would be an especially cool collaboration, since in Fire Emblem, when a character dies they’re gone for good, while in classic Shining Force games, there is no “Game Over” in the game and your army gets stronger even when you’ve been defeated.

I would love to see that no-”Game Over” element visited with Fire Emblem characters, while conversely, I would love to see Fire Emblem‘s new team-up attack system incorporated with Shining Force characters. I’d really like to play on those tradeoffs.

I would definitely enjoy that idea far better than a Shin Megami Tensei-Fire Emblem collaboration. I feel like Shin Megami Tensei will only messing up the vibe of the Fire Emblem element. It just doesn’t fit well with the FE universe.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

If you’re going to Vote Down this free opinion (because I’m sure some kid will), at least have the balls to explain why.

    • ityshaun

i see where your coming from, the idea is somewhat unusual but still most of the time unusual idea end up pretty good like kingdom hearts. And about the pop trend remark i dont really see it in the main games unless you were talking about the persona series which isnt shin megami tensei but more towards an alternate of version megami tensei which is the orginal novel.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

I’m not against an unusual idea, and yes, I do know that sometimes they turn out to be awesome. But I’m taking a practical analytical approach to evaluating this game idea. SMT and FE are just two games that don’t particularly complement each other much. Everything from their art style, their settings, their gameplay, and their subgenres as being RPG games.

SMT centers on more of a traditional RPG game, with a traditional battle system with dungeon-crawling elements that bears a mix between Final Fantasy and Atlus’ own Etrian Odyssey. It’s a free-roaming game with a dynamic camera you can control as you freely explore environments, you can hack away obstacles in your way as you explore in a third-person view. While the series does deal with fantasy elements, it’s more of a “techno-fantasy” theme with most of the game being set in a technologically-modern world. You can assemble a small party of a couple of allies and battle together in fast-paced battling. There really isn’t much of a tactical element to the gameplay, as the franchise is more of a dungeon crawler.

FE centers on more of the tactical RPG genre that this classic franchise helped establish. It bears a battle system that’s similar to Tactics Orge and Final Fantasy Tactics (both of which FE inspired). It’s a fixed-area-roaming game with a fixed overhead third-person camera (until you engage in an attack, and then it goes down closer to ground level to show the attack animation), and pretty much all interactions in the game are confined to the battles. The game’s setting is an ancient medieval fantasy without modern technology. You assemble an army of numerous unique characters and battle together in grid-based turned-based-paced battling. You can use tactical elements to your full advantage such as the support system, an emphasis on group preparation and elevation advantages between battling units.

I’m not saying that you can’t make a game where two completely different franchises come together and work out well. I’m saying that they’ve got to still fit together sensibly and play off each other’s elements somehow. Besides SMT‘s conversation system being similar to FE‘s support system, their both being RPGs, and their both involving elements of divine themes and Asian mythology (and even there, they’re different–SMT plays on real-world examples of religious and mythological themes while FE deals with a mythology made just for the game), there’s not much else where these two franchises meet in compatibility. I don’t see much how any sort of synergy between the two franchises will be achieved.

As for the remark about the pop trend element, I am aware that the Persona sub-series isn’t the main Shin Megami Tensei series, but what I am particularly referring to with the “pop trend” thing is how in most games in the entire Megami Tensei franchise, you play as high-school-student protagonists with interests in technology and pop culture (like video games and school culture). They’re elements that pertain more to modern Japanese pop culture rather than much a medieval fantasy (which is where FE stays the entire franchise).

I should also note that the main SMT series has been taking on more of the elements found in the Persona sub-series, particularly taking on more of its modern edgier style (particularly since SMT3) and how the game (once again) centers around your high school student social life. Atlus has been taking their main series more along the way of Persona’s style, which is why I said that SMT is currently more pop-trendy in its modern-culture style.
Anyways, my point in bringing that part up was that it is a world away from the vibe of Fire Emblem, and as a longtime fan of FE, I’d rather see a more fitting series collaborate with FE, like Sega’s Shining Force.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

I took great care with that parsing, didn’t I? ;)

    • Internetakias

You know most mainline SMT games are 1st person dungeon crawlers that focus heavily on Japanese mythology and folklore, right?

    • miiworldtoo

First of all, BEAUTIFUL Crossover idea!

Second, I wasn’t too keen on this crossover idea either because I don’t know much about Shin Megami Tensei. But the only reason why I’m pumped for it now is because Fire Emblem will finally have an all-star cast in an all-star world.

Final Fantasy x Fire Emblem!! Now that could be epic, because it has swords and magic, and… medieval stuff (forget the technology stuff for a moment though). Just saying.

  • Kanashimi-Jigoku

    Want to play this one!

And I would like to see a Fire Emblem X Golden Sun or something like that.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

Now that sounds like an awesome idea–Fire Emblem X Golden Sun. I’d stand outside in cold winter rain just to pick that game up first-day.

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

you’re not the only one that would do that. I love both games, and I’m still waiting for Golden Sun 4.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

You and me both, dude. Golden Sun 4 on the Nintendo 3DS. Camelot needs to get on it, because my money is ready.

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

I really don’t care if it comes to DS, 3DS or WiiU, I just want Golden Sun 4.
Golden Sun 3 was an awesome game, but it let me a little empty comparing them to Golden Sun 1 and 2.

    • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

      Same.

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

You know, I don’t know about this game but I would love to see Skies of Arcadia X Golden Sun too, or a remake of Skies of Arcadia it would be so awesome!!!

    • miiworldtoo

I agree. I mean, the story was intriguing and all but the journey felt short and I didn’t really follow much of what happened. :/
BUT I LOVE GOLDEN SUN!!! xD

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

Yeah but it was kind of short and there where lot of things that remind me of the other Golden Sun, specially the last boss. But apart of that, the summonings, and the girl that transform into a beast where all awesome.

    • miiworldtoo

Fire Emblem X Golden Sun?! I’d sell my kidney JUST to get that game!!! xD
Now would that be a tactics RPG or a regular RPG? Hmm…

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

It could be a combination of both. Movement map could be just like Golden Sun, so as fighting in the world map, I don’t think it could be that difficult to adapt Fire Emblem characters to Golden Sun gameplay. Then story fights like in cities or that sort of things, can be the same way as Fire Emblem except when the fight starts it could be as Golden Sun, selecting powers, attack, guard, etc etc. and like Fire Emblem Awakening tag combos and all of that can be the same, but the only great difference about all is the HP, its going to be very different at least to Fire Emblem, because in my opinion I prefer if they use the Golden Sun stats and not Fire Emblem and that is because Golden Sun have more magics, powers and different summons.

Well that is my opinion I don’t know if anyone would agree with me.

    • miiworldtoo

That would make the game really complex and full of features. A true gem.
Hey, maybe we should try a petition for a crossover like this, see if Nintendo will buy this idea.

But then again, what are the chances that petitions actually work? I remember when I was in high school, people petitioned for an actual Super Mario RPG sequel, but that never happened.

    • Kanashimi-Jigoku

But a just a little of our time to make a petition, that if it becomes true will have hours in enjoyment is not that of a bad idea. If you want make the petition and send me the link. :) oh and if you where asking yourself about how would the classes work with this mix, then I find a simple way to it, make it like Golden Sun, Classes change depending on what Djinns is the character using, Example, if a Character has 3 wind djinn it will be a thief, until level lets say 10 at level 10 if he has 4 wind djinn it would turn into an assassin, but even if you have 4 djinns if you are not level 10 you will still be a thief, that way all characters can be customized from the beginning, :)
