IdeaMan from NeoGAF has revealed there’s a new port on the latest dev kit for the Wii U that should allow third-party developers to use two, simultaneous tablet controllers with the Wii U. At the moment, “it looks like studios can’t take advantage of it”, meaning we shouldn’t expect to see any of their titles at E3 2012 that use both controllers. But the existence of the port strongly suggests Nintendo is working on the functionality.

Two Wii U remotes will be great, but three or four will be to many.

    • bebibroly5

Yeah. 4 people lining up controllers to the screen and remote playing would be a bit much

    • Green Reuben

SUPER SMASH BROS!!!! I need four, especially if they use the touchscreen anyway. I’m kinda hoping they add a new mode that is kinda like dissidia.

    • Trulaw

      4 for the win!

    • Julian

I don’t see the harm of quad remote support. I suppose maybe it would put strain on the console, and perhaps little to no games would use it, but i don’t see why it wouldn’t be there, just in case.

    • jobro

u know waht this would mean-5 screens showing thé game at the same time…No technology could get that witout framebrakes. It would of course be awesome,But noone would like to Blay SSB with5-10 fps^^

    • Trujillo

there is technology out there that can stream hd content to multiple screens with little lag.

doing this for standard definition content or 480p would only use a fraction of the data those setups use….therefore it would be possible to get them going at regular framerates.

also consider that under the proposed 4 tablet method…there would be no gameplay on the main tv….maybe a map at bests…therefore, if there were a slight bit of lag..and it would not be noticable because all the tablets would be nsync with each other…..they would all be receiving the image at the same time without the main screen gameplay being there to ‘desync” whats happening on the tablets

gonna be really stupid if you cant use at least 2 Wii U Controllers. I do not care for Wii remotes, dont hate them, just dont care for them

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/MrKoopan?feature=mhee MrKoopan

they need to make gamecube controller ports for it :D

    • Hudgins_501

      ^

    • BlazinZzetti

Somebody should create a gamecube port adapter for the wii remote so you can plug your gamecube controller like a classic controller. I would just be a little box that takes in a gamecube controller’s input and creates a classic controller’s output into the wii remote. Sounds simple enough to me.

    • Green Reuben

someone could make a classic controller that is shaped like a gamecube controller, or maybe nintendo will release one.

    • http://gravatar.com/jacknzack27 JacknZack

or mabey some people should just get over gamecube controllers and move on.

    • Tails the Foxhound

      ^This.
The GCN controller is great an all but isn’t innovation supposed to be Nintendo’s strong suit? Don’t we always champion that as Nintendo fans? I think it’s time we move on and see what Nintendo has to offer us next guys.

    • bebibroly5

      mirkopan pls

  • trujil

why would 4 controllers be too much?

2 should be minimum. but 4 is ideal.

remember that its not about the system not being able to handle it. Consoles have been doing 4 player split screen for years now. Nintendo should make sure that whatever method of wirelessly transferring that info is powerful enough to do 4 standard definition video streams…tablet screens are so small it could be in standard definition or 480p and still look crisp

have it do that…and maybe just output a map on the screen…they should make or have made whatever is transferring that video data powerful enough to do 4 seperate streams at standard resolutions.

    • zeta

you have to remember that for every time you stream to a controller it takes up power from the console so it may not be that if they tried to hook up 4 controllers it wouldn’t work, may just have too much of a burden on the system to be useful enough to add it so they going for 2 only.

    • jobro

and as i said-no technology could handle this(or at least it would be priced at about 600$[just the tech making 5 screen stream possible])…

    • Trujillo

actually it doesnt really take much from the console itself…it would take not much more than regular split screen. Actually maybe less considering those split screens would no longer be rendered in high def and instead in standard definition or 480p

its more an issue of bandwidth available for streaming video. Whatever the mechanism is for it. Whatever internal device inside that is doing the streaming has to have enough bandwidth to handle 4 screens at 480p or standard definition. Nintendo should or should have made sure they didnt skimp on that part of the tech.

as for the point about the tech for making 5 screens stream being 600…thats for HD content…therefore light years more powerful than what nintendo would need for these upads that dont even display in high def.

on a screen as small as the upad screen…standard definition would still look pretty crisp.

Is the Wii U being able to support two controllers really that much of a surprise or even news worthy? I don’t understand why there are people questioning if the Wii U will support more than one controller. It would very silly if the Wii U didn’t support more than one controller now wouldn’t it?

    • David

As of last E3, it wasn’t possible. There’s a lot of data that flows between the tablet controller and the system, and Nintendo has never been clear about if it will be supported.

  • http://wiiublog.com Pops_waka waka

Ether way 2or4 U pads to be played nintendo changed multiplaying as we know it.

  • Ricardo

You guys are missing the point. By 2 simultaneous controllers, Ideaman is saying that when you boot up the Wii U and you have 2 U pads, 1 U pad player can be playing a game on the TV screen, while the 2nd U pad controller can browse through the internet through the U pad screen.

Do you people understand now? If you do not, please ask.

  • Mairio

The thing i dont get: suppose you want to play a two player game, how will that work? I hope u can use more than one controller at once, but chances are, their gonna be crazy expensive (for a contrOller, at peast)
    Thoughts?

    • Ricardo

Wii U WILL have 2 U-pads support. If all Wii U games were single player only, (excluding online) Nintendo would fall harshly.

Yes, a 2nd controller may be expensive, but who knows if it’ll actually be worth the price! :) E3 is officially 6 days away from starting! :DD eeeeeekk! Sorry, :P

    • Tails the Foxhound

FYI, there are only 3 things the U-mote can do that other controllers can’t. Communicate with items through NFC, capture video content, and display video content. All the components of the controller (INCLUDING the 3 innovations) are comprised of old tech. Even if Nintendo over charges us, the controllers shouldn’t cost more than $70, maybe $80 a piece. I’m betting $70 (MS’s wireless controller is currently overpriced at such.).

    • person (formerly person)

@ Tails, I don’t think that you will be able to buy them, but rather bring one over to a friends house if you have a wii u as well. Mass-producing these controllers seems like it would be very expensive.

  • Ricardo

Ooooo, and David, I like the new addtion you added, being able to receive newsletters through email – Thanks! :)

  • canthia

that is cheap because ps3 controler is 59.99 so 70 dollar for a wii u pad is a steal even 80 dollar at most still a steal

  • Example:WiiU

    I hope this is true!

  • person (formerly person)

It seems like people forget that wii remotes still work with the Wii U, yes, 2 tablets is great and can open up a lot of room for creativity, but local multiplayer would still be possible without it.

    • http://gravatar.com/jacknzack27 JacknZack

yes but that leaves 1 person with the cool controller and everyone else with the boring wii remotes.

  • waluigi

Why dont they make a cheaper controller that has the same controll sceme but with out the screen.
