Mass Effect Trilogy

Electronic Arts announced Mass Effect Trilogy — a collection of the three Mass Effect titles — for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. This would have been perfect for the Wii U as many Nintendo gamers have not played the series. But unfortunately, Trilogy is not coming to the Wii U.

Why?

According to a long-time user of NeoGAF:

EA did not expect Wii U owners to buy Mass Effect, anyway, so no point in porting over three games. If ME3 sells gangbusters, they’ll consider it a proper summer home for Mass Effect.

And this leaves me feeling conflicted. I want Trilogy to arrive on the Wii U, but I also don’t want Electronic Arts to hold games hostage like this. It’s just lousy all-around.

    Silly EA… Tsk Tsk Tsk

  • dubYA

I find EA’s lack of faith disturbing.

I think I hear Darth Vader cracking his knuckles.

    • I am Error

Sir… you just made my day

    • Totodilee

Maybe it’s because Nintendo rejected EA’s Origin and went for Valve… I mean before I thought EA said that the Wii U is awesome and stuff, but now EA is calling the Wii U “lacklustre…” but I think that’s a rumor but if you want to read more about it go here http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/nintendo-ea-and-the-ed-up-origin-deal.452607225/

LOL at Ea. they should be called “that game company that is greedy” (even if this blog post isn’t about their greediness)

Didn’t know this mass effect trilogy thing existed. I’ve been wanting to play them but could never find the first one. so yeah… Getting this… For ps3.

    • Steffan

Are you implying other game companies aren’t greedy?

    • nf_zeta

most aren’t at the level of EA

    • TheFarmboy

Well, they already won the award for being the Worst Company in America.

  • XypherCode

They don’t need to port if because the Wii U version of ME3 already has that comic feature built in to the game that summarizes the first two games. And Straight Right is the one developing the Wii U version and they focused on that. BioWare made all three games for the 360 and PS3 so it’s fitting that they make Trilogy for those platforms.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002405665613 Paul Taylor

That doesn’t amount to much, it like a comic that summarizes Spider-Man 1&2 and let’s you play through 3 except what you did in the prior two DOES have an “Effect” on the later games.

  • Johnson Difectus

These big devs/ publishers to get there heads screwed on right.

If they want their games to sell, the need to put the games out there to be bought. With any new console, developers need to take a leap of faith. Obviously nobody has a Wii U yet, so companies need to invest in projects that people are interested in.

Putting out ports of games that are a year old and (rightfully) expecting them not to sell well is a pretty poor way to gauge interest, especially since the core gamers (the ones who are interested) have probably already played them.

Consumers are interested in new and original content, not playing catch up for the last generation. If the Playstation and Xbox are getting new games, WE WANT NEW GAMES TOO.

    *end rant*

    • Link01000

I agree. The Mas Effect games are amazing. I played them all on my PC, but I would NOT recommend just buying the third. For a game as story-oriented as this, it would be stupid. But, of course EA has to ruin the few good games that they have because of their greed, like they already did with The Sims and Dragon Age. MONEY Y U THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL???

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002405665613 Paul Taylor

And, their lack of support for a better Spore fan enviroment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.parlamas Chris Parlamas

    I don’t like EA anyways.

  • suportedcofe

They have killed mass effect 3 sales on Wii U.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Zeldazero Ken Seymour

I think it will come to WiiU, but the problem is they are playing smart. If they said right now it was coming, would anyone be dumb enough to buy ME3 for $60 when they can wait and buy all 3 for $60. This is a more likely scenario than a lack of faith in Nintendo.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002405665613 Paul Taylor

But, they already messed up with just a hint of a rumor of this.

    • I am Error

indeed, the only way I see they can compensate is porting the trilogy to WiiU and lowering the Price of ME3, that way gamers will have to decide between the expensive trilogy or the more affordable single game.
… Now that would be hard choice now

  • Nintendo4Ever

this sucks. I’m not getting mass effect 3 specifically because I haven’t played the others

    • josh

Woah! Don’t punish yourself. The Mass Effect trilogy is awesome and 3 is the best one (imo). Because of the interactive comic you’ll still get to make the big decisions and get the story from the first 2 games, and to be honest the first one isn’t that great, so really all you’ll be missing out on is 2. Seriously; if like RPGs you owe it to yourself to play Mass Effect. I’m considering buying it again on Wii U even though I’ve already played the series to death on 360.

    • Carlos

So, accordingly to your logic we should be happy to pay 60 for a comic and a games when they announce the other console would have the 3 games for the same price?

No, no, sorry, no, simply, no…no.

    • Josh

No, according to my logic, if a game is good then it deserves to be played. The only person missing out with these small scale boycotts is the person boycotting.
Plus theres the issue that if EA gets poor sales on the Wii U then they just won’t publish as many good games on it, and those that we do get will be inevitably be cheap ports as the Wii U ‘won’t be worth the investment’ to them.

  • Soeroah

So, if the only way they’ll port over a trilogy is if ME3 sells ‘gang’busters, then that must mean a hypothetical Wii U compilation will be cheaper than it’s versions on other consoles, since most people will, be the very fact they decide it’s worth a port, have copies of ME3.

Yeah, I don’t see that happening. EA is trying to get fans to buy the same game twice- one stand-alone, and if it does well, again in a compilation that won’t be any cheaper.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hector-Cortes/100000351183370 Hector Cortes

Not only that but they’ll try to justify Nintendo fans paying the full $60 price tag for one Mass Effect instead of all 3 games via the triology.

  • Ichigo Kurosaki

Sooooo basically out of all 3′rd Party developers supporting Nintendo, EA just decided to pull the plug after all that big talk last yr? First they give us the crappiest version of Madden 13 not adding all the features, then they do this??? It’s almost like they want it to do bad. Cuz if it does well, more money in their pockets, and if it does bad they’ll sit back and say this is why we didn’t bring the Trilogy to Wii U. Ah shut up EA. The last good game you made was Need For Speed Most Wanted for PS2. All other 3′rd party devs are giving us their biggest games and exclusives. Activision, Platinum Games (Sega), Ubisoft, etc. Yet EA is giving us a yr old port along with a new game that might as well be old without the features that makes it what it is. They just made a big doo doo all over Nintendo.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Hector-Cortes/100000351183370 Hector Cortes

See and EA wonders why Nintendo fans don’t get behind there franchises… well EA how about you don’t insult the intellegence of gamers actually give Nintendo fans the real deal when it comes to your games already this is why Nintendo can never court 3rd parties right because they always get screwed in the long run no matter what.

  • Nepenthe

Oh irony. I saw this Trilogy announcement the other day and was left scratching my head. I would have bought Trilogy on the Wii U, but I’m sort of unlikely to just buy ME3. I’ve never played any of them. I love the idea of getting all three, since Wii U is so late to the ME parade. Just putting out the third while the rest of the world is now in trilogy/compilation mode is disappointing.

Catch 22 here in my opinion.

Where is Borderlands 2 for Wii U? Why is Assassin’s Creed Trilogy (also just announced) a PS3 exclusive (okay, I can understand that one not coming to Wii U — it’s an exclusive so it’s missing the 360 too — a tad more than the ME Trilogy not coming to Wii U)? Why is the Wii U only getting “Transformers Prime” when the other consoles got War For Cybertron / Fall Of Cybertron (I like the Prime TV show a lot, but from what I’ve read of the Prime game, it’s nowhere in the same league as the Cybertron games)?

    • Mr Neversoft

I couldn’t agree more on ME3. I’m not particularly interested in jumping into a trilogy at part 3 but if they released the full series I might be convinced to try it.

  • abe

If I was era I wouldn’t say we was releasing a trilogy for Wii u either… who would buy me on launch when they wait a few months and get all 3 games

Also me1 was never on ps3 its was published by ms studios but ea recently bought the publishing rights back

  • TheFarmboy

Sour grapes for Nintendo possibly declining their offer on making the WiiU use the Origin only?

  • EA are right

    Actually they are right

    • AxGamer

No offense but your logic is…F*CKED UP!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Roy-Lagendijk/770149065 Roy Lagendijk

My gosh. EA. You are.. Weird. You release the third game in the series, but given the chance to release the other 2 as well so people can have the entire series, you don’t? I’ve never liked EA much anyway, so whatever I guess.

  • DrunkEnShadow

EA lacks a lot of things

  • GalaxyWafles

It’s EA, what did you expect.

    I saw this coming.

  • MrSRArter

What kind of fucked up logic is that? EA is even worse than Activision, just not as bad as Capcom.

i dont blame them. this post wasnt even comment worthy but since other people decided to leave comments i will too, saying who cares about this game?

  • lars

EA is selling the trilogy at the same price as ME3 on the Wii U?

What is even the point of releasing it on the Wii U. Who is going to start with the 3rd part of a game series which is so interconnected like ME.

EA is sabotaging the Wii U sales and than will probably blame Nintendo for the lack of sales.

  • nf_zeta

Honestly this is such stupid logic, so basically what they are saying is this:

“We don’t think this will sell so we will first try to sell the behind the times ME3 alone as a gauge of whether we will later release the STORY prequels to the game knowing that everyone on the Wii U will already have experienced the end of said story and through the comic will have a general idea of the first two.
Also lets not forget that the gameplay is basically the same for all of them except for the few enhancements which they will enjoy in ME3 anyway”

  • ttt

Obviously they won’t announce a Trilogy pack, if they did they’d loose sales on ME3 due to people waiting for the bundle-

  • Nintendo_Rules

EA, how about you guys stay awhile from the Wii U, does not look like people are going to support you guys if you gives up the cheap version of your games! I was consider buying ME3 into this came out. At least I know I can spend my money on other game instead!

    • AxGamer

Same here! I was planning to buy ME3 too but not anymore!

  • 009soulmaster

Yes. Lets have a trilogy game be on consoles that most people probuably have played and already owned and assume they’ll spend more money for games they already have and plysd and not on a new console that fans and uopporters of the consoles will not have played and would love to get it

  • Katherine Cunningham

God that is frustrating. I was looking forward to play ME3 on the WiiU, but I already own all three games on the 360, and I am not sure I really want to pay for ME3 three times.

  • Carlos

EA is the prove that you can be rich and powerful making all the wrong decision. But don´t go out believing this is easy, you´re really need to put some effort in to find which one is the most god awful stupid decision of all and saying all the correct words to piss off the most people of all, and that is not an easy task.

  • http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3204673/ GameManiac

If it DOES come to the Wii U, I’d buy it.

  • MrBloodstone

The trilogy not coming to Wiiu has nothing to do with EA’s lack of faith. Microsoft has exclusive rights to Mass Effect 1 so you will never see the trilogy on any other system other than Pc or Xbox 360. That’s why you don’t see PS3 on the list.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tyrell.jones.9 Tyrell Jones

It makes sense, but in a way it’s f*cked up too.

They wouldn’t have to hold a gmae hostage if they jsut made a version for the Wii U, I mean REALLY lack of faith in the platform, they will sell ANYTHING to ANY CONSOLE, but not a hot seller lack Mass Effect, all those yearly sports games….

I had a feeling something was up when they didn’t announce a trilogy earlier, especially considering the hate Mass Effect 3 got just for how bad the endings turned out, I just expected the “Bad Quality” of Mass Effect 3′s endings was because of the assumption EA was already going to make trilogy NOT the entire arc…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002405665613 Paul Taylor

  • Nice Strong Arms

I was thinking of picking this up, but not any more. Why would anyone buy this, knowing that they are getting totally screwed? Now Mass Effect 3 will flop and EA and possibly other publishers will hold back even more AAA titles.

    Nice work EA.

    Kill yourselves.

    • Big E

      “Kill yourselves.” No. Just no.

  • Trulaw

    EA makes very bad
decisions all the time so this isn’t a surprise and at least this
probably means less EA shovelware filing up the Wii U shelf in game
    stores.

  • Then buy it

If you want whole trilogy buy Mass Effect 3 then

  • Egghollo

Guess I will get it for PC then instead.

  • Dead Scream

It would be nice, but they had said already before this was posted that they were goin to give us an interactive comic strip or w/e its called to catch us up. None the less, it will still be nice to have those other 2 games.

  • AxGamer

I can now safetly say EA is as stupid as Micheal Pachter.

  • AxGamer

If EA truly wanted “gangbusting” sells than they shouldnt bite the hand that was going to feed them. Way to go corperate fools!

  • Gregory

I bet if EA put a sticker on the box / marketed that it was 3 games for the price of 1, then it would sell like hot cakes

  • punktendo

The site also states that they’re releasing mass effect 1 as a digital title on the playstation network for $14.99. So i guess there’s always the chance they could put Mass 1 & 2 on the eshop. Wouldn’t be as cool as getting the trilogy, but better then nothing…IMO. http://masseffect.bioware.com/about/trilogy/

  • milkyway24

Wow.. This is the same exact thing konami did with MGS3 3DS and the hd collection on consoles except the only excuse i had for getting the 3ds version was portability but this is just.. Lame.

  • ZhaneEndrick

This is just stupid. I’ve avoided the ME series because I never got to play the first one because I can’t think of a legitimate reason to buy a 360. I did play a small portion of ME3 in a playtest, and it was enough to interest me in the series. I’m actually planning on buying the series set on PS3, but I would consider it for Wii U if they released it there too.
But then, it is EA, so automatic dumb.

  • Brianx88

EA, you really are the dumbest company in the industry. You wanna know why Nintendo fans have no interest in your products? It’s because in the N64 and Wii days, we never saw your products. Because you couldn’t just port the 360/PS3 versions, you instead didn’t bother, or slapped us in the face with garbage spin-offs like Dead Space: Extration, and the get mad when we don’t bend over and take it.
Mass Effect is completely story driven, if you’re going to play the series you NEED to play it from the beginning, not start at the end. If you offered Mass Effect:Trilogy as a WiiU launch title, people would buy it, I know I would and I already own the entire series on 360, but no one who owns exclusively Nintendo consoles has played Mass Effect, and no 5 minute comic can replace two whole games worth of decisions and content, so there’s no incentive for people to buy it, especially not at full price.Activision, Ubisoft and Capcom are offering up some great games for WiiU, they have faith in the system, we don’t NEED you, so if you want our money, make an effort for once.

  • Phill Rockey

Mass Effect 3 won’t sell well on the WiiU? That is why you aren’t putting the first two games on the system? Maybe it would sell better if you weren’t selling the whole trilogy for the same price, a couple weeks before the WiiU launch. Did you ever think of that, oh masters of marketing disasters?

  • random

Wow and I thought Capcom was bad for using the same game over and over again. But you EA take it to the next level.

Note: I’m actually quite pleased that they are releasing Monster hunter 3 on 3ds and WiiU since I have not yet played the one for the Wii. Also Capcom adds content most of the time if not all the time to their ports! EA your are not sagacious.

  • http://www.controlpaddesign.com/ TheMaverickk

The logic in EA’s reasoning is so flawed….

If there was a ever a platform that would’ve benefited from the Trilogy version of Mass Effect, it would be the Wii U.

They are basically saying…. only if enough people buy Mass Effect 3 will they get the opportunity to buy it all over again, but now as a complete package.

It’s a slap in the face to people who support ME3 on Wii U. Their lack of faith basically becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

We don’t have faith in the platform, so we are refusing to put the best version of the product for sale…. when that lesser version doesn’t sell they will then claim “oh look the Wii U isn’t a good home for Mass Effect”…. but the only people they have to blame is themselves.

I didn’t buy ME3, but I’d be willing to pick up and play a Trilogy version and start from the beginning on Wii U. I just don’t feel right starting from the 3rd part.
