A supposed leak from Ubisoft has possibly revealed that the CPU within the Wii U is similar to that of the Xbox 360 and PS3. But in regards to the GPU, it’s about 1.5 times as powerful as either console. It’s only a rumour, of course, but based on what we’ve seen running on the Wii U so far, it’s not that hard to believe.

  • Josh

    What is GPU?

    • bmcj199

      Graphics processing unit

    • Pokefan9000

The hardware AKA the key to its success against the PS4 and Xbox 720

    • Josh

      I got it now. Thx.

    • MetroidFTW

      and CPU?

    • RicardoSForever

Central Processing Unit. It’s what determines the power of a console/PC.

    • anonymous

GPU – determines how good it will look.
      CPU – doesn’t really affect anything visual-wise.

    • I am Error

@annonymous: Actually… if the CPU power is low, the look of the game will be affected as well, like having framerate issues or really low FPS capability.
There’s a balance needed between CPU and GPU.

  • Meelow

Ubisoft also said the Wii U only can support 1 Gamepad.

    • David

They didn’t. That’s how many blogs interpreted it. Ubisoft was only referring to their game though.

    • http://blaaa josh with the truth

E3 they said they can support 2 gamepads

    • rafael cantaluppi

The first blow of games for the wii U can only support 1 gamepad because their were made it with the old dev kit… The newer one is more powerfull, and can support a pair of gamepads :)

  • Wildman

1.5x as powerful isn’t much. I don’t believe it because that would be an old GPU to only be 1.5x more powerful than the current HD generation.

    • Dr. Deneuralizer

Well it would mean the pricetag could be much lower than we think

    • Rick

But, the Wii U GPU is old, I mean, is newer than PS360, but 1.5x better is the difference betwen a game that on PS360 run at 720p and on Wii U at 1080p. The games on Wii U won’t be ugly, but the question here is, will that be enough to run UE4?

    • Bilbo Baggins

      1080p is 2.25x the resolution of 720p
So it would take about 2x the power just to see a resolution upscale
no extra shaders, fps, filtering and textures. That is, of course, if they want 1080p

    • skywake

Well the Wii was pretty much equal in power to the Xbox so… there’s a precedent for less than this.

    • FLUDD

the games that would fully use a GPU that’s 3x more powerful would cost 3x more to make compared to modern PS3 and 360 games.

    • Rick

      @Bilbo Baggins

Nope! Affirming this is affirm that PS360 has the same GPU that Wii U has, and it doesn’t work like this, there is many factors like GPU clock, number of shaders, texture fill rate, memory speed, etc… and don’t expect 1080p games so quickly, the developers still have to explore the Wii U hardware.

    • jobro

I dont think it can be as powerful and just 1.5 more powerful gpu.For the GPU-As Bilbo said , it would need ca. twice the GPU Power of Xbox360/PS3 to play games in 1080 p …
BUT the more important point is-the hardware of the Wii U can stream 3 different contents on 3 different screens , 1 in 1080 p and 2 in less than 720(if I´m right with the game pad res.),and the frames just drop to 30 fps…This means the hardware has to be a lot better than the one of Xbox360/PS3,or at least pretty good.Maybe with the 2nd controller available and the hardwae being better(It has to be if it can now support 2 Controllers),UE4 will come to the WiiU.It might be Ubisoft refered to an old DevKit(If I got that right at the pres-they didnt have the 2 controller supporting WiiU DevKit)…

    • http://blaaa josh with the truth

what i herd was it will use randon HD in 700-900

    • abe

several devs have mentioned that an next gen graphics jump will triple development costs and that will ‘double’ the store price of games.

THQ recently said that most publishers will only release a few big AAAA (next gen) games a year and launch several AAA (current gen as downloads/ discs)

knowing that, the Wii U’s ’1.5x’ GPU dosent seem so bad, since they have to do extra work on wii u game anyway

  • Miks

What? A IBM POWER based CPU isn’t just a tad bit better than a PS360 CPU, well, if it’s a POWER7+. And the GPU is said to be a AMD Radeon HD GPU, so, it’s also pretty powerful. But I don’t believe the CPU part, why should developers, like Gearbox, state that the console, I quote: ‘…very, very powerful…” if the CPU is just a tad bit better? And I don’t think Nintendo is that stupid to create such a low specs console, compared to the PS720, which I think are going to be pretty powerful, unless Nintendo plans to unveil a new console after 2 years, which would be ridiculous, but not impossible, since they did dump the Virtual Boy pretty quickly.

    • http://ttgtt.com yoshibro87

The Wii U CPU is designed by IBM. It is described by IBM as an “all-new, Power-based microprocessor”,[66] the processor is a multi-core design manufactured at 45 nm with an eDRAM cache. Although neither Nintendo nor IBM has revealed detailed specifications, such as the number of cores, clock rate, or cache sizes, references to the chip containing “a lot” of eDRAM and “the same processor technology found in Watson”[67] indicate that the processor shares some characteristics with IBM’s POWER7 processor, which powers the Watson computer system and incorporates a large L3 eDRAM cache. The Wii U CPU will be produced by IBM at their 300 mm semiconductor manufacturing facility in East Fishkill, New York. That is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U

  • Odeon X

Ewwwwwww!!! I hope they redesign the front of thr Wii U console!

    • Wildman

It’s not that bad. Is it. It’s very sleeper. Doesn’t stand out. Minimalist technology designs are my favorite.

  • leo

i just want the damn thing to be able to compare its graphics to the 720′s and ps4.. im tired of people bashing the wii because of its graphics!

  • zeta

don’t believe the CPU part but as for the GPU i’m on the fence although i think the GPU in the Wii U should be at about 2.5x the current gen as that controller is going to basically gimp everything in terms of graphics, in fact i would like if the Wii U was second in terms of specs when compared to next-gen as it always has to deal with that controller, this would ensure they get all the games.

  • MikeJones

What Nintendo could potentially do is actually quite intelligent. If Nintendo make the Wii U just about capable to run UE4 at a substantial standard, without having a massive CPU or GPU, the price could be pretty low. Naturally, Microsoft and Sony will try to better the specs, which will skyrocket the price. If this is the case, less people will buy a PS4/Xbox 720, and more will be drawn to the Wii U. If they play their cards right, it can be a revelation.

    • HugoBOSS_HD

I agree with your statement. Nintendo, being FAR from perfect (yet still my fave first-party manufacturer), has UNDOUBTEDLY learned from their mistakes.

    • mrgrimrjs

I think Nintendo are trying to release it to have close enough to a 5 year head start of the competitor. Playstation was supposed to last at least another 4 years by their own predictions. I believe Nintendo is trying to be ahead of the curve This way when the other companies launch their new systems, Nintendo will be just about ready to launch their next console. Nintendo has been known to launch a console every 5-6 years or so

  • herp

Only 1.5x more powerful? Are you kidding me?

    • Wildman

      Don’t you believe it!!
      Lies! Lies and slander!

  • guest

The only thing I can think of why nin has not shown there specs is because they what to hold off to the last second not to show there hand to ms and sony

    • Atstyle

Exactly what i was thinking especially when we know that epic is trying to convince microsoft and sony to use better gpu in their next system to be able to support unreal4.0 but was satisfied with the U and even helped nintendo tweaked the hardware to support it.

Moreover knowing that wiiU will run an extensive OS(560mb enormous compared to 360′s OS ”dashboard” which is 32mb) which will be multitasking (i.e browsing with the U gamepad on the net while playing a game on tv with the pro controller). The wiiU is very powerful to be able to do all this and support 3 video thread(1wired through HDMI and 2 using proprietary wireless bandwidth) 2 game pad might be 480p for their small screen since the picture quality seems to be just as good as the tv.

  • Lene

I have a doubt about the CPU. I still believe in that POWER7 CPU rumor (mainly because no one said anything more credible since then), which makes me think the WiiU CPU will easily outperform the now ridiculously outdated PS360 CPUs.

But the story about the GPU sounds completely fake. 1.5x? It is even more than what we were hopping for with the RV770 processor at some point.

    • Lene

*even LESS than what we were hoping for

  • http://nintendo.com tuly

Everyone rejoice, for this rumor is completely false.Reggie clearly said in an interview, and I quote,”Were launching an EXTREMELY powerful console”, end quote. Now we all know that Nintendo rarely focuses on power so why would Reggie say that if it wasn’t true?Case closed.

    • dorobou

Extremely powerful for Nintendo, but not for the industry. Accept it and move on. The Wii U is a next gen system in terms of interface, but not in terms of specs. Games developed by Nintendo will still be good regardless of the specs.

  • http://nintendo.com Umbaku

WTF!!!!!!!!This is why Nintendo will never be as good as Sony or Microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc

This ain’t true, it’s absultuly ridicolous

It’s like having graphics that are like halo or somthing, but can only play atari like games

    • Wildman

Umbaku… don’t tell me you believe this trash.
The internet will be swarming with rumors like this until the Wii U’s technological guts are shown off and the specs are talked about. That may be today. That may be tomorrow. Maybe never. So just sit back, relax, and trust in the power of friendship.

    • the psvita is better

are you kidding me? seriously the fact that nintendo created games that are as good if not better than a lot of game in the most powerful consoles, using a console that struggled with graphics shows that they are equally as good as sony and microsoft and now that they have a powerful console, we’ll see who is the best

  • dubYA

Many of you are too focused on specs and power. The Wii U will be more powerful than what’s currently available, and that’s fine by me. Nintendo has a way of “magically” wringing every ounce of power out of their consoles. Just look at SMG 1 & 2 on the aged Wii. Now imagine what they can a ccomplish on the Wii U.

Going forward graphics matter less and less. Of course, the next offering from Sony and MS will outperform the Wii U, but will the average consumer really care? Especially considering UE4 looks only marginally better than cureent gen graphics to the layman even if there’s more going on inside the box.

If things get bad for Nintendo (which I doubt they will) they can always release a new console in five years or so that will be better than the competition which will likely be only half-way through their consoles’ cycles.

Oh, and one last thing. Notice the prong sticking out of the right side of the console. Perhaps that’s to gain easy access to the console’s innards to allow for hardware upgrades in the future. Just a thought.

    Happy gaming!

  • http://wiiublog.com jokesta

i dont care the specs of the wii u aslong as it can port all of the copy and paste xbox 720/ps4 games i buy it if it cant srry but i wont be buying the wiiu…why because nintendo promise to bring back the hard core if they cant deliver then i wont be delivering my money…. and to be exact by what i mean by copy and paste games i mean mass effect 4, batman arckman world, cod black ops2/3/4 cod mw4/5, battlefield 4/5, and all the new engines UR4,Cryteck 3/4, SQ enix lumis and what ever else… if nintendo can deliver this than i dont care if the wii u is half or 1/3 as powerfull as xbox 360 and ps4

    • jobro

so you´ll wait f**ing 2 years to get your next console^^

    • cancelln

You’re gonna wait until they release black ops 4 to find out if you should buy a Wii U? I guess that means you’ll probably never get one since I doubt there will be a block ops 4

  • SEGAGIGA

What the, these rumors are getting out of hand…

Don’t you realize that the games shown were “First Generation” Wii U graphics? It took what, seven years for the XBOX and PS3 to pump out these type of graphics and the Wii U’s going to do them on day one.

Nintendo is being conservative, they’re steadily building up the hype. They’re not going to release what the Wii U is truly capable of until the system nears its launch day.

Nintendo deliberately placed the spotlight on 3rd parties like Ubisoft to lead the onslaught.

  • Roxas

    But….Can it run Crysis?

    • MadCrain

      Yeah, but so what :(

  • dorobou

    Sounds about right.

The rumor that Nintendo was constantly tweaking the system specs was probably true; true only in terms of pushing the Wii U to be able to support 2 Wii U gamepad instead of one. I don’t believe that Nintendo was ever trying to tweak the specs to support UE4, which would have made the system far too expensive to be considered by the mass gamers. Unfortunately, the Wii U is still too under powered to support two Wii U gamepad at the same time without a drop in performance. Fundamentally, the Wii U seems to be a current gen spec system with a next gen user interface. Therefore, I consider it a next gen system, but not in the traditional sense.

  • Truth

1080P, frame rate is 60 per second. Any fool dumb enough to think that the Wii U is weak needs to stop gaming now. Even if Nintendo tried hard they could never make the Wii U weak; the modern tech used cannot allow it lol.

  • Adam

How does that compare to high-end P.C.s or rumored next gen specs?

  • Zack

That’s kind of disappointing considering the age of the xbox 360, but the graphics look good nonetheless, plus this will keep the price low and the graphics are “good enough”. After all, it’s the games that really matter.

    • Wildman

Don’t believe the lies and slander!

  • larsberg

How can CPU similar to the 360 AND the PS3?
    these have complete different structures.

  • Dmt4030
    • Dmt4030

Some people are Slow at Fact’s and some are just dumb ass to not learn how to put 2 and 2 together.

  • jluviano4578

Isn’t Ubisoft is using older dev kits?

    • Wildman

They may have been whenever this rumor was placed onto the internet.
I think the devs are using the latest kits (v5) for development now.

  • Hristijan

It’s more powerful than just 1.5x.Ubisoft always does this to us leaking some shit. But this thing has a fucking IBM Power7+ in there. That shit is in a super-computer.I don’t know much about the IBM Power7+ but i do know that it is in a super-computer.And the graphics card might be a “work in progress” since it is a custom one modified to do 1080p.So this rumor might be false.

    • Hristijan

And now i looked up the IBM Power7 and it’s BEAST!!! I mean you can’t even compare it to Xbox 360 and PS3 COMBINED!!! So this (sorta) confirms ubisoft are wrong.I know it’s just the CPU but the graphics are going to totally be next-gen.

    • Hristijan

Whoops new update. The CPU is similar to the Xbox CHIP.But i think that the wii u one will still be more powerful than the xbox 360 chip.

    • Hristijan

But nothing is confirmed yet and Ubisoft might be toying with us.

  • Swankenstein

I’ll wait until the first game that stretches the Wii U muscle to be excited about its power, and I’ll wait until the first game that can’t be ported to Wii U due to technical ability to be disappointed.

Now is not the time for either.

  • don’t yell at me

does 1.5 mean twice as power plus half or just another half as powerful then xbox and playstation.also i am curious as too how much games like batman and ass creek 3 push the hardware on the wii u weather the games run flawlessly or if its pushing the console too the same limits as the others on the market.

  • doesnt matter

i hate how people compare stuff to the xbox360 “and” the playstation 3 as if there on par.ps3 is more powerful then the 360 end of story.if the wii u is as powerful as the 360 or more doesn’t mean its as powerful as the ps3.also too some people out there thinking wii is on par with xbox 1 ur delusional.xbox had doom 3 i rest my case.

    • Alex Atkin UK

PS3 has a more powerful CPU, 360 has a more powerful GPU and more flexible RAM.

So no, PS3 is not more powerful. Because if you have a game that works best with more than 256MB RAM but needs little GPU memory, or vice versa, then Xbox works out more powerful.

  • SEGAGIGA

Reggie has already confirmed that the Wii U is a “tremendously powerful system”. That alone is assurance the Wii U is capable of going head to head with whatever Microsoft or SONY pulls out of their hats.

He wouldn’t use the word “tremendous” if the system is only 1.5 times more powerful than current gen systems.

    • Alex Atkin UK

Not necessarily as I believe Reggie and Nintendo are only talking in relation to their own consoles.

The WiiU compared to Wii IS a “tremendously powerful system”, so the comment is accurate. How it compares to the competition is a different matter.

    • Dmt4030

@Alex Atkin UK it’s a next gen console why wouldn’t it be more powerful then the current generation, man people like u are slow at getting the term next gen, Ps3 only has a core processor, Xbox 360 has a only two core processor, Wii U has seven core’s in their processor.

    • Atstyle

Dmt4030 don’t go and spread false info just to make you feel better.

truth is 360 a triple core cpu while the ps3 has like you said 1 core cell processor which can do alot on paper but doesn’t seem easy enough to deal with.

Strength of nintendo is that U will have alot of ram and is a system pretty easy to develop for(key element to allow 3rd parties make the u their starting console when doing multi-plat games)

WiiU said to have Power 7 IBM processor. assuming theres is many variation of it. lowest one being 4 cores and the highest one 8cores with 4 threads per cores all clocked from either 2.4ghz to 4.25ghz. so no matter what version of power 7 nintendo pick it will outperform by far all other cpu. 360 Xenon cpu does share architectures ressemblance as it is from IBM but Xenon cpu is lightyears behind the weakest power 7(4 cores at 2.4ghz) due to the non existent L3 cache on the Xenon while U cpu will have 32mb l3 cahce which makes a great difference.

    • Dmt4030

Atstyle this isn’t the Confirmed spec’s it’s Rumored spec that has net been Confirmed by Nintendo, AMD made Nintendo processor so don’t believe what E3′s article say’s because once again Nintendo didn’t confirmed the CPU or GPU spec’s yet.

    • donatello

A person who does not know anything about PC Hardware will never understand what most of the People here are talking about. When did a 45nm CPU became NEXT GEN or even CURRENT GEN? Even if Nintendo will put the most powerful GPU in the planet, the CPU will just produce a bottleneck. I suggest you learn computers more rather than typing Nonsense. I have been a Nintendo guy since the NES days, but this Wii U is a Rip Off. Nintendo is the only reason why I have game consoles but with this specification. I will think twice……or hence I am just a fanboy who wants to get ripped off

  • Alex Atkin UK

There is little point in guessing as CPU power is not something you are going to be able to tell from first generation titles.

Also even if the CPU IS not much better, if it has more RAM then that in itself will make a huge difference.

Same goes for the graphics, the fact first gen titles look as good as current gen Xbox/PS3 titles gives you an idea of just how much better it is. Its obvious the shaders/lighting is far superior to the current generation.

  • SEGAGIGA

    @ Alex Atkin UK

It seems some people believe Nintemployees live in another galaxy. But they don’t. They are perfectly aware of what is going on in the world of VG. When I look at the PS Muerte I even think Nintendo is much closer to the reality than Sony.

NOTHING HE GAVE US CLUES GUESS WHAT HE JUST GAVE US THE CLOCK SPEEDS WITHOUT BREAKING THE RULES

HE AINT TALKING POWER HIS LETTING SLIP THE CLOCKSPEEDS

he said cpu is like ps3 and x360 so his saying the clockspeed is 3.0ghz to 3.2ghz THATS WHAT HE IS LETTING US KNOW then he said the GPU is half again HIS REFERING TO SPEED his saying the clock speed is 50% higher so the gpu is between 750mhz and 800mhz

his not telling us how powerful the wiiu is HE NEVER MENTIONED THAT his saying the following cpu is like ps3 = 3.2ghz or there abouts and his saying the gpu is half again 500 ad half is 750mhz THE SPEED OF 4850 ATI GPUS

this guy has put it out there AND EVERYONE GOT THE WRONG END OF THE STICK YES THE CLOCK SPEEDS ARE AS HE DECRIBES he aint talking POWER work out the riddle

this is like a old british carry on film they say something and your own mind makes it dirty OH LOOK AT THAT ISNT IT A BIG ONE THE GIRL IN THE CARRY ON FILM SAYS your mind makes what she is looking at a penis she didnt say anything rude your mind made it rude the camera pans and the guys got a huge cucumber in his fridge or something

nintendo u need to wake up the success of the wii was a fluke, then 85 percent of owners said they were annoyed by the cack graphics.
when the next xbox and ps4 come out it will be made to look like the wii in comparison.

And even at the desperately marked price point of $250, the Vita isn’t even selling. So they have millions of unsold systems, and the few that are bought are costing them $100 dollars.

Sony may get out of that alive, but I think they’re suffering a massive blow financially.

The 360 didn’t even launch in HD at all back in 2005. The 360 ran at 480p until the HDMI 360-pro arrived in 2007. And even then, most games then ran at 720p. 1080p games weren’t even common with the 360 until 2009/2010. So the Wii U’s launch has alread stomped on the 360′s launch in terms of capabilities.

As for the PS3, that thing launched in 2006 with HDMI, allowing for games to run in 1080p, however, none of the launch titles did. Just like the 360, 1080p titles weren’t common until 2009/2010. So the Wii U launch is miles ahead of the PS3′s launch in terms of capabilities

(A response to two blind fanboys who are probably too young to even play the games they’re playing. Another tip to you two: Using all caps and tons of exclamaiton points just shows you are attention whores and lack even a shred of maturity.)

That’s a shame about the CPU. Current console CPUs are really holding back progress in physics and AI in games.
