GameCube Controller

Kotaku asked Reggie Fils-Aime — the President of Nintendo of America — the following question:

Will GameCube games ever come to the Virtual Console?

This is what he said in response:

That is a great question. And personally I would love for that to happen, but we have nothing to announce right now.

And this feels like foreshadowing to me.  It might not be announced for a while, but I think it’ll happen.

  • icedude545

i want to be able to use a gc controler for the wii u :I

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kevin-OHare/100000084919610 Kevin O’Hare

I think there’s GC-style controllers in the market that connect to the Wiimote like the Classic controller does. =)

  • Yes

I’d love some Virtual Console Wind Waker/Melee/Tales of Symphonia.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elias-Naim-Batche/1265051011 Elias Naim Batche

I missed out on Wind Waker so I would very much like that too. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/tyrell.jones.9 Tyrell Jones

Agreed. I miss both of those games a lot.
And you forgot Paper Mario TTYD, pokemon colosseum, and XD gale of darkness

    • http://www.facebook.com/8xBIT Thomas Reifenberg

I would love to just use the discs I already paid for.

    • RandomDSdevel

Me too! I’ve got about 14 of the lil’ buggers! I’d also need to import my save files, too, though, so I hope that the Wii U’s Wii migration features take the older Wii’s Gamecube backwards-compatibility features into account somehow…

    • BellaKazza

Then use a GameCube or a Wii.

  • SomeGuy

Twin Snakes on Virtual Console. I didn’t get a chance to play it the first time around. Please Reggie? Please?

  • Matt

I’d love for this to happen too. I still want Nintendo to bring Gameboy Advance Games to the 3DS eShop. I’ve played most GBA games, but I missed out on esome of them.

    • RandomDSdevel

I want to see Gamecube games on the 3DS and GBA games on the Wii U via game save synchronization.

  • http://wwwdonicwebstartscom.webstarts.com/ donicx

baten kaitos for me :) also i drew that

  • YayGs

Yeeaahh, GameCube had some good stuff. But how would they make up for the analogue triggers? Classic Controller >.> Though, I suppose it would only make some games unplayable..

    • Pyroblock

      um… what?

    • YayGs

What what? The Gamecube has analog L & R shoulder buttons that also click when pressed down all the way. The first classic controller is the same way, but the Classic controller Pro, Wii U Gamepad, and the Wii U Pro controller all have digital buttons. Some games, such as many racing games and Spartan Total Warrior which you can half way press the L or R button to do a different attack, wouldn’t be easily playable on Wii U.

    • Jairo

Don’t forget Mario Sunshine, slightly hold down L (was it L?) to spray slightly, and fully press it to spray in place :3

    • YayGs

Oh, actually haven’t played that yet. Picked up a copy at gamestop a while ago, just haven’t had time.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Maybe they could do it through double tap? Like light is one tap, heavy is a quick double tap. Or even holding down ZL and then pressing L or R is a heavy press as opposed to a light one. It’s pretty dumb that they have to use workarounds but it’s not impossible.

    • YayGs

Yeah, I mean it wouldn’t make games totally unplayable, I just don’t see them implementing a work around like that since simplicity is usually the key to successful interfaces. However it would be done I’m sure would be fine, I just don’t want to use the classic controller (original) because I hate the left analog stick being on the bottom :(

    • RandomDSdevel

They could definitely use the Wii U Pro Controller.

    • YayGs

Yeah, no doubt but I was just a little concerned about how some games utilize the partially pressing of the L and R buttons. I’d still love to see GCN games on Virtual Console.

    • Marty

analog joystick press while holding R/L?

    • YayGs

You mean while holding R/L one of the joysticks would be used to simulate pressing down an an analog trigger? That could be awkward, but does makes sense hardware-wise unless you need to move using a joystick and use the trigger or triggers at the same time.

    • RandomDSdevel

The joysticks do click, though, or at least they do on the GamePad.

  • MrSRArter

    Warioware Mega Party Games!

    • Perry

      Heck yes.

  • Hybrilynx

if nintendo loved it, then that means nintendo would love to resell them instead of making it backwards compatible.

    • Ice Climbers

Why would they make the Wii U backwards compatible with an ELEVEN year-old system?

    • Hybrilynx

thats like saying why would microsoft make the xbox still play dvd’s when they are ages old. while microsoft being the only company that uses dvd’s. then microsoft says, we would love to bring dvd’s to our new console that doesnt play dvd’s.

    • MadCrain

Are you retarded? do you know the definition of “backwards” compatible, it’s in the freaking name, it reads discs, or titles, from the past generation, Why would Nintendo implement a Gamecube disks lens if it’s already an old and forgotten system, beloved, but old nonetheless.

    • Hybrilynx

becuz thats what makes a company cool. when they stop doing such things, they stop being cool and end up as microsoft and sony.

i would say more about how almost everybody supports old internet browsers for their website (even mobile browsers which i dont understand why anyone would even do that), but i dont feel like getting into that. which is kinda the same thing about having the wii u support gamecube games.

    • Soeroah

To be fair, Sony has the worst BC so far on a home console. At least Nintendo consoles mostly tend to play the current and last generation’s media fine. Sony only seems to allow that under certain time restrictions and Microsoft so far seems to be similiar to Nintendo, although two generations isn’t enough to establish a pattern.

Obviously I’d love to be able to transfer the data from my Gamecube discs to my Wii U, but at this point, I’m glad I got to play them for an extra five years on the Wii before being expected to rebuy them to play them on the newest system.

    • Sonic20012

I hope when the PS4 comes, it’ll have immediate BC for PS3 and maybe PS2 titles for the PS Store. That’s how Sony can make up for the lame BC on the PS3.

    • Bicentennial_Pidgeon

Also realize that since VC purchases from wii transfer to U, if that pattern continues you will NEVER have to buy those games ever again (once they make a digital copy).

  • Schultz38

Translation: It’s coming. We’ve talked about. We’re saving it for later.

    • Tails the Foxhound

      No whammy! *crosses fingers*

      Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

  • TheFarmboy

    Same here Reggie…… same here……

  • Bewoulf2000

I’d love to see this happen. I’d proably buy games I already own just to keep on wii u. I really want to see this thing happen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/8xBIT Thomas Reifenberg

They took away the Gamecube port, already you can’t use the Gamecube controller and are stuck with the worst controller next to the power-glove, the Wii-remote. So I seriously doubt that Gamecube and its perfect ergonomic controller will return.

    • Ice Climbers

That was on the “family edition” Wii model, which has only been out for a year or so. Hardcore gamers would already have a Wii. For the Wii U on the other hand, we have the GamePad and the Wii U Pro Controller.

    • http://www.facebook.com/8xBIT Thomas Reifenberg

However, we would still not be able to use all the Gamecube controllers we already have. We would have to go buy new ones.

    • RandomDSdevel

Grrrrrrr. I already have a set of four.

    • RandomDSdevel

Hey, what if Nintendo or a third-party made a GameCube-to-Wavebird controller port adapter and a wireless dongle for one of the Wii U’s USB port’s? Also, GameCube controller-to-USB adapters exist, albeit scarcely.

    • Sonic20012

The Pro controller could be used for GC games. I wouldn’t mind that. But I’ll be angry if they make it the Classic controller.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elias-Naim-Batche/1265051011 Elias Naim Batche

I’ve been saying this literally for months. I hope it does happen. It was nice having the best of the N64′s first party catalog available digitally.

  • EddKupo

That would be cool. Hopefully it happens.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tyrell.jones.9 Tyrell Jones

I’d be ecstatic if they brought TTYD to the virtual console. Hopefully they’ll even bring sonic mega collection too.

  • DrunkEnShadow

One of the reasons i wanted Wii U is cause i heard its gonna have GC games on VC so i hope this happen. GC was my fav home console!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1581638598 Tylor Ray Gallagher

This well most likely happen, but not till next summer. Right now Nintendo really needs to show how much it wants hard core gamers and show what it alone can bring to the table that’s news. Gamecube games next summer would be a big add on to virtual consoles library, and if they could support hd all the better. Coming out with games like Mario sunshine would be a big hit followed by wind waker.
But for now they should stick with new content, also being able to play those games and Wii games on the gamepad well be a big feature

  • dubYA

I’d love Reggie games on the Wii U.

    • MadCrain

I’d love Wii U Games on the Reggie

  • Egghollo

    Yes! This sounds awesome!

  • http://www.facebook.com/martin.kearney.104 Martin Kearney

Who would’nt want this? I never got to buy and play all the gamecube games I never bought. Paper mario, Resident Evil, Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, and even the Starfox games. I also want to see them relese the rare games to find too, like Pikmin 2, Wind Waker, Sonic Gems collection, or Megaman X collection.

  • Falcon

The GC had loads of really great games, It would be really dumb on the BigN’s part to NOT include GC games on the eShop

  • Nintyfan10

Nintendo fans would “love” to see Reggie put that plan in affect.

  • papermariodude101

Smash Brothers Melee please… While I wait for Smash Bros. 4

  • Michael

Super Smash Brothers Melee HD Remix with online multiplayer

    • Sonic20012

      Now you’re talkin!!!! :D

    • http://www.facebook.com/norman.fongochoa Norman Fong Ochoa

And what would be the point on developing and releasing an all-new edition?
      Think before posting.

  • Kyloctopus

Not only bring in GameCube titles. But lets not forget about DreamCast titles

    • MadCrain

Dreamcast is from Sega, I think the Virtual Console consists in old Nintendo titles, correct?

    • RandomDSdevel

We’ve already got Dreamcast, GameGear, TurboGrafx16, etc., on Virtual Console.

    • MadCrain

For shizzles!? Holy crap, I had no idea :3

    • BellaKazza

Wait, aren’t DreamCast games on the 360?

  • Arsonist Monkey

  • http://twitter.com/iamdylaniacona Dylan Iacona

they shouldve just made gamecube games playable on here i dont think its fair for someone like me who already has WW to go buy it virtually

    • RandomDSdevel

Me neither, but maybe somebody could create some sort of third-part device for save data transfer.

  • Nargacuga

…….Wasn’t there a rumor about this a year ago?
Plus Nintendo did add N64 games for the Wii.
My guess is That this will definitely happen.
    Mmmmm…….nostalgia.
