Nintendo has unveiled the Wii U Pro Controller via Nintendo Direct. During the event, Satoru Iwata described it as “light” and “more attractive for longer and more intensive forms of gaming”.

  • TheEpicTreecko

    YES! YES! YES!

    • Basil

Perfect for Smash Bros Wii U

    • TheEpicTreecko

Excactly what I was thinking! :DDDDD

    • Knuckles

      YUP!!! FOX HERE WE COME!

    • Ben

Also look. It hasn’t been confirmed that more than 1 of the WiiU gamepads can be used at the same time, but these, you can use 4!!!! THANK YOU NINTENDO!

  • bill

    Cool!

  • danny

    X-box anyone?

    • bill

      Classic Controller Pro anyone?

    • Mads
    • Jesse

MICROSOFT NEVER ripped of Nintendo anyone ?

    • Drew

Jesse you love microsoft too much and all controllers look the same now similar concepts

    • http://wiiublog.com Jared

      @Jesse Mic. copyed the Miis

    • Flight

Microsoft claims they developed the Avatars before the Miis yet the Miis were in development since the Famicom days. (wary)

    • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian L.

Jesse, read my post to “Now Who Copy” down below. In case you were really asking that question, just look back a few years before the prominence of the Xbox 360 controller.

Microsoft has in fact copied Nintendo in the past (more than once). Besides the concept of Mii-like Avatars and a bevy of Wii Sports-like games, where do you think the original concept for the Xbox 360 controller even came from?

It came from taking design ideas from the WaveBird controller for GameCube (such as the “clicking” feature and wireless pack design) and the DreamCast controller (which they clearly used as their model with even the first Xbox, down to the very colors of the face buttons).

    • real gamers choose nintendo

no not at all and you just made yo self look highly stupid

x pad is a wavebird copy wavebird is a nintendo pad wirless for gamecube and gamecubes pad and the wavebird is were ms got this design

add to the above facts the underside of this pad is as wavebird was and gamecube pad not xbox pad again the IDIOTS GOT BITCH SLAPPED

the button and stick layout is clearly wiiu game pad and the overall design is clearly wavebird

sad ms fans tried and failed

    • Naner

@Flight: Microsoft must’ve been developing avatars since they ripped off the Macintosh, then. :P

  • evilmonkeyman289

Wow, they thought of everything. Just bring back Joel Machale.

    • donzaloog

      ^THIS!

    • Craig E

Isn’t he an actor? lol He’s in one of your weird American shows… Last time he was wearing some gothic stuff, it was strange.

  • ohhh

    sweet!

  • bob

    They just showed the console!

    • Pete41608

dont let Nintendo deceive you, just because they showed a Wii U console, doesnt mean its final. if they redesigned it surely they’ll wait til their E3 presentation.

also that was the same exact version they barely showed at E3 2011

    • http://1227.com/ xdlugia

No, it was not identical. The console now had the Wii U logo on it just like the controller.

    • Pete41608

you mean they changed the Wii logo to Wii U logo? wow, totally UNNOTICABLE. (<<<sarcasm) has anyone from Nintendo said it was the final design? cause if not, ill wait til confirmation.

  • Jesse

Now no one can complain about controls!

    • Roy Lagendijk

      My thoughts exactly, fufufufu~ :3

  • ADam

    Is it wireless??!

    • http://gmail.com ThugNasty97

      yes

    • DarkRoseKid

-_- really did u look at the pic it wireless it like a ps + xbox thing going on there but it all awesome

    • adrian12369

doubt it, why would they make it wireless?

    • DarkRoseKid

lol i see what he did funny

    • Roy Lagendijk

@adrian: Because all the other controllers are wireless..? Gamepad, Wii Remote, etc. Only reason Classic Controller Pro (the normal wii one) had a wire was because it plugs into the Remore, like the Nunchuck does.

    • That64Kid

^ He was being sarcastic. Was it really not that obvious..?

  • leo

hope it comes with the console already

  • Deuce

It totally is the 360 controller, with the right thumbstick relocated. And honestly, I don’t really mind.

    • Divad

I agree, the 360 controller is the second best controller so far in my opinion (minus the crappy D-pad). More of a good thing couldn’t hurt.

    • waluigi

      agreed

  • Neoxon

I think this is for the other 2 who can’t use the Wii U GamePad (given only 2 Wii U GamePads can be used). Still, looks great.

  • RicardoSForever

Never played on a 360 that much, but from the short time I had mine, I always found that controller to most comfortable, between it and the DS3 and CCP.

    • Total911

Are you kidding? You mean the 3DS and CPP. XD

  • George Tirebiter

Dear everyone who wanted a regular controller: You got it! I imagine you’ll have to purchase it separately, but you’ve got it!

    • George Tirebiter

Pre-Order Wii U now and get a compatible Gamecube controller from Club Nintendo. :P

    • Flight

This’d be good for Smash Bros 4, but still if they put up a gamecube-like controller it’d be great

  • Hylianhero64

YES this is exactly what I wanted. Now I just hope it has analog shoulder buttons and clickable control sticks (equivalent of R3 or L3 on PS3 controller). And it looks wireless (little blue leds on the bottom).

And could that be… A micro USB port on the top?! So maybe it could be used as a PC controller?! Aw yeah. Now give it a reasonable price tag and I’m a happy camper.

    • George Tirebiter

If the sticks on the pad are clickable, I’d suspect these are clickable too for the sake of compatibility.

  • http://wiiublog.com Jared

Tis is like a sexy mix of the PS3 controller and the XBox controller personally i like it but as we all saw the wii u gamepad was black on the skit and so is this so is the console black. AND does this come with the Wii U

  • adam
    • littlebigmusic

      That’s the best!

    • Basil

      Close call

  • adrian12369

i’d prefer it if they moved the right stick to the bottom. it’s sort of hard to aim in revelations because the circle pad is “on top”

    • Alex Atkin UK

Its hardly fair to compare a circle pad on a very un-ergonomic handheld console, to a controller which is shaped to be extremely ergonomic.

  • pizza2004

I imagine that this is basically the Wii U Gamepad without the screen or camera, so I imagine it’ll probably also have the motion control from that controller. I might be wrong, but if so it’s like the ultimate combination of the Xbox and PS3 controllers. I’m not entirely sold on the location of the analog sticks, but I imagine I will be once I actually use it.

    • Divad

I was also assuming that it would include the gyroscope (and accelorometer I think) since it seems that could be key for some basic games.

As for the sticks, I much prefer this over dual shock and I’m sure it will prove to be bomb for those who like to play First Person games with control sticks.

  • DarkRoseKid

I think it about time nintendo steal a lil like sony n microsoft do all the time nice change for one even tho i still like that nintendo never did that but i guess to grow up n be like the others u have to be that way too maybe.

    • DaRibbit

This is what M$ and Sony copy. get for copying Nintendo all thous years and thinking they could get away with it! All they did is gave Nintendo free R&D
      ^_^

  • Busted Hope

I don’t know what you guys (some) are talking about, it has nothing from the DualShock

    • kik

you can see its possible to charge it just like DS3 (xbox360 uses bateries)

    • Pete41608

the USB port on top and the player number light setup on bottom is PS3 style. the shape is 360 style, and button layout is amix of 360, ps3 and a bit of Nintendo’s own doing.

      Nintendo FMS!!

  • Playstation-crunchers921

    DAYUM thats sexy

  • Ricardo

The buttons ABYX buttons look like they are going to be hard to reach.

Anyone else get that feeling? It looks as though you will be stretching your thumb the whole time just to place your thumb on the buttons. :(

    • adam

I was thinking the same way too for a bit, but I think that you won’t notice that during play. on the PS3 you have to stretch your thumbs to use the joysticks which feels a little awkward at first but you don’t notice after a while. I think that they did this to optimize the controller for first person shooters, because it will be more comfortable. Furthermore, it’s going to feel better to play games like mario bros. where you use the buttons and the D-Pad, since they are at the same level.

      I’m excited.

    • Alex Atkin UK

You mean compared to stretching your thumb to reach the right analog on every other controller?

I can’t see it being any worse.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Yeah, it’s just like reaching up from the PS360 analogs, except now you reach down.

    • Basil

Imagine playing with the 360 controller. You get the point.

  • Drew

    IM CRYING WITH HAPPINESS

  • donzaloog

If the dualshock and Xbox controller made sweet sweet love and had a baby, this is what it would look like. I love it! Nintendo is covering all of their bases with the Wii U. Perfection!

  • Freddo

I hope the Wii U Classic Controller Pro can be plugged into the USB of the Wii U or something, the one thing I dislike with the Wii Classic Controller Pro is that it drains the battery of the Wiimote.

  • Tails the Foxhound

Kinda upset I can’t use my Classic Pros with the Wii U. At E3 last year they said ALL Wii controllers, so I bought 3 more in prep for this. Now I can’t even use ‘em. How lame.

    • XZAceNintendo

Yes you can. This is just a NEW controller. Not a redesign on the regular Classic Controller Pro.

  • Charok

Looks pretty good. Too bad they didn’t use a shape similar to the GameCube controller, of course with the traditional button layout, better D-Pad, and same sized analogs. The GameCube controller was the single most comfortable controller I have ever held.

    • AquaFire

Why is there no one else talking about this?

  • Zack

I’m a bit confused. So you could use this in place of the Wii U controller? And have everything on the big screen instead? It seems like quite a challenge to design games to play on one big screen, one little screen, or have both used at the same time. If I decide to just play on one screen, would info that would usually be on the other screen switch over to the one I’m currently playing on?

    • Puremasterx

Good point. Alas, I have no clue.

    • littlebigmusic

Maybe some game will require the use of the gamepad, but some games that only use the bottom screen as a menu system will make it accessible with the start button. It really depends on if the team working with the gamepad make good use of it.

    • Jay

The kind of games that would absolutely require the Wii U gamepad (tablet controller) will most likely be games that you wouldn’t want to use on the Wii U pro controller, like party games. Think the “chase Mii and battle Mii” demo games. Those require the gamepad for one of the players. Now, take for instance, Alien: Colonial Marines. Gearbox claims they have big plans with the gamepad controller and it’s screen functionality. Whatever tricks and info that they may put on that controller, would most likely, have a “back up” system. So, if it displays a map, or is that “alien tracker” device, if you aren’t using the gamepad controller, you will probably just see the map on the big screen and the “alien tracker” attached to the weapon, like you would on the PS3/360 version. littlebigmusic pretty much has it right. That stuff will have some sort of pause menu or hud on the screen. Resident Evil Revelations has all items and weapons available on the 3DS’ touch screen at any given moment, which would be a feature carried over to a Resident Evil game on Wii U. However, pausing the game to access your items like in RE4 or RE5 would still be possible if you use the pro controller. There will be a way to do it, especially since 4 gamepads at once probably isn’t doable, so multiplayer games will mostly be played with the pro controller.

    • MegabusterLegends3

OR, it could just be for players 2, 3, and 4 on multiplayer games.

  • Deathisme

I have been waiting for years to see one of these

One more thing the whole time I was watching the video I was thinking of Kim jon ill from team America

    Lol

  • MyArcad

oh boy we can use our xbox remote on the wii u! oh wait…

  • Cragnar

Gen 6. First there was Gamecube:

An original design by our heroes Nintendo

Gen 7. Then there was Xbox:

Nearly an exact rip off of the game cube controller including exact button and analog stick placements, the gamecubes shoulder buttons and triggers, and an incredibly similar color layout originally from the n64 (A being green) (B being red) (analog sticks being grey)

Gen 8. Now there is WiiU:

Similar shape to the xbox 360 controller but with different button layouts. Yet, couldn’t one say that considering the 360 controller is nearly an exact copy of the gamecube controller that the WiiU controller is in fact just an evolved version of the gamecube controller?

Yeah so shut up you fanboys (Nintendo and MS alike) who cares what it looks like, everything is a rip off. What matters is if its comfortable and easy to play with.

    That is all.

  • Wolf

The only game I can see myself using this for: Smash Bros.

    • Ricardo

      Do not forget shooters. :P

Basically, you will need the Pro Controller for any serious game you buy.

    • Neoxon

Yeah, Smash Bros. would be played on the Pro Controller for me. Still debating on shooters since most games will have an added benefit for the touchscreen (& insta-voice-chat/video-chat). I’ll turn to my arcade stick for fighters (if the Wii U doesn’t play nice with 3rd Party controllers, I’ll just find a way to mod my Eightarc to work with the Wii U).

  • minh

The controller looks sexy. Thank you nintendo for finally acknowledging hardcore players! Now, all we need now is a First Person Shooter (mario-style) made by nintendo.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheIcedude545 icedude545

    i want gc controler

  • rom

I think im in love <3

  • Alex

Reminds me a mirrored Ocarina. Yes it does.

  • mkdhdh

if you can videochat while playing then this is perfect because the camera wont move al the timebecause of me playing so i’ll buy if not too expennsive

  • Lucie

What about chatting during a game? Does it include a microphone? Like the Wii U gamepad?

    • DR4G0NB0RN

There will probably be headsets made for the Wii U.

    • Jay

They will probably make a headset, or allow your gamepad controller to function as your microphone as you play with the pro controller at the very least.

  • D43

Those who think nintendo is copying microsoft, go here

    http://nintendoeverything.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11827

    • uPadWatcher

      Now I know… thanks D43.

  • Ohan

I don’t think it looks too comfortable with the right thumb stick located that way…. WHY NINTENDO WHY?!

  • Dmt4030

Microsoft,Sony,Nintendo copy each other so please stop saying that they are stealing shit, they take a idea and use it so stop Bitching.

  • NOW WHO COPY ?????????????

Now who copy this is XBOX controllers

    • Gila Monster

Nintendo can copy shit from anyone they want. There wouldn’t be any videogames if Nintendo hadn’t stopped the video game crash of 1983.

    • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian L.

Now Who Copy, go look back in history, dude.

Microsoft developed the Xbox 360 controller with direct influence from the Nintendo’s Wavebird controller for GameCube and the Sega Dreamcast controller.

The whole analog “clicking” feature on the Xbox 360 controller and wireless design? Try WaveBird controller as the innovators. All Microsoft did was move the function to the joysticks instead. Clever, but imitation nonetheless. And practically every other button on the 360 controller? D-Pad? Trigger buttons? Shoulder buttons? Standardized analog joystick on modern controllers? Rumble feature? All Nintendo innovations.

The overall form design of both the original Xbox controller and the Xbox 360′s controller’s form? Try the Dreamcast controller, buddy. In fact, combine a GameCube controller with a Dreamcast controller, and you have almost exactly an original Xbox controller. Microsoft didn’t even hide the fact that they looked to Dreamcast for a model of their controller–they even took the exact same face button colors as the Dreamcast controller had. Talk about shameless.

Nintendo’s just addressing an issue of having a traditional and ergonomic controller form that many “core” gamers have and will demand for some games. Nintendo’s doing what it takes to make sure they address an issue before it starts.

Fact is, many “core” gamers–who Nintendo wants to gain again–expect a “traditional” controller of somewhat this design now. Even with the innovative Wii U GamePad, there will be times when they’d demand for such the modern traditional controller (again, a design that Nintendo greatly helped shape).

But somehow, Nintendo still did this controller design better than even the PS3 and 360 controllers here. The D-Pad is done right (finally), the buttons are well-placed, and the thing looks sexy in black. They’re being smart in making this Pro controller an available option, but the star of the show is still the Wii U GamePad.

But as Gila Monster already said, they’ve been carrying the video game industry with innovation after innovation for almost 30 years–they can afford to look to one of their imitators’ proven success every once in a while.

  • http://MacroManJr.blogspot.com/ Brian L.

This Wii U Pro Controller will be the perfect complement as additional controllers for local multiplayer games, just in case Wii U only supports one or two Wii U GamePad.

  • lord BNT

If you look closely at the top..it’s pretty much confirmed it’s rechargeable like the ps3 controller.. hated the fact that I couldn’t play if i ran out of AA’s for my xbox

  • Kraw

Yeah, this totally looks like it was “inspired” by the XBox controller formwise. But I don’t really mind, considering that the 360 controller is ergonomically the best one I ever held. Thanks Nintendo for not choosing a less comfortable design.

  • jSlice

woohoo, finally a better controller for my PC too. The Classic Pro isn’t that good because the sticks don’t go full circles, they have corners… if you get what i’m saying.

…Yes, i’m just bragging that i’m using a wii controller to play PC games :3

I love your name. So true.

  • Snow

This must come with every Wii U sold; I don’t want developers to have any excuse not to include support for this thing.

  • Joshua

I think the main reason Nintendo made this was to easily port over AAA games that are already on the PS3 and 360 such as Dead Space, Mass Effect, Red Dead, Borderlands etc.

  • http://bisolomueinc.weebly.com henry

finally nintendo! You figured it out. you had great controllers with the n64 and gamecube, but then you fucked us when the wii was released.
