Nintendo is working on 3D Mario title for Wii U, set for release in 2013

Paul Gale has heard from “a trusted source”, that a 3D Mario title is in development for the Wii U. As he admits, that’s sort of a “no duh” piece of information, but apparently the game is set for release in 2013, which makes the nugget a little more interesting. Gale has received bad information in the past, so this definitely has to be considered a rumour, but it also sounds perfectly plausible. We’ll probably hear something at E3 2013.

    I could never believe the game will be released so early in the consoles life cycle when we have heard nothing about it by now, I would think mid to late 2014 at the earliest and E3 2013 to acknowledge the games existence.

    There was half a year between New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2, so it IS possible :D

      The time between SMG and SMG2 were roughly 2.5 years, and 2013 will be even longer than that, infact 2.5 years since SMG2 would be November 2012, so 2013 sounds pretty logical.

      Come on, SMG 2 is basically the same game as SMG, only with new levels. Of course the development time would be short between those two games.

      Don’t think so. Simply put, Miyamoto said that they’re not about to make a sequel for something that they don’t have enough fresh ideas for. With Mario Galaxy 2, they had enough unused ideas from the original that they were able to make a sequel, but a 3rd Galaxy is unlikely. More or less that was the idea.
      Besides… completely new system… I wanna see a completely new Mario game. What I’m wondering is what type of game it will be. Mario’s been to space already, I wonder what they’ll do next as far as scale.

      Thats actually very true, if they did make a 3rd one, the ideas wouldn’t reach the levels as 1 and 2 were,since the time frame is small. I am thinking maybe revisit and old idea say 64 or Mario Bros. 2?

      I’m curious to ask, How would you feel about full voice acting in the sequel ( if they make it) like the original Sunshine? I know a lot of people hated it but I personally didn’t care either way. I wouldn’t mind if they added it.

      It really didn’t have very much voice acting, and mario didn’t really say anything, so it wasn’t that bad. I really liked it. It made it feel like it had a better story than other mario games even though it was basically the same.

    I d love a MArio Galaxy 3 – though I dont really believe it will be out that soon…Galaxy 1 was phenomanal , but Galxy 2 was even better – and both were not so easy.I wonder what 3 will be^^

      I dunno, Mario Galaxy 2 was just the same thing as the first with a few extra things thrown in (yoshi), so a 3rd would just be even more of the same game.

      But I guess that’s some peoples’ thing, seeing the sales of NSMB 2.

    I think Mario needs a break for at least one year from saving the Princess. I mean yes there different. I think a 2013 announcement at E3, alongside a 2014 release would be perfect.

    You guys might thumb me down but w/e. I hope its a Super mario 64 remake, and when i say remake i mean Graphics are in TODAY’s graphics and no SIDE characters NO MII’s only Mario.

      TBH, back when I first played SMG and SMG2, I imagined this. Like the physics and graphical style of SMG, combined with orchestrated arrangements of the entire soundtrack (as well as non-orchestrated stuff that SMG/2 has such as Flip Swap Galaxy’s music which clearly can’t be created by real instruments)

    Wow I am so excited!3D Mario’s are always my favorite! I hope is a completely new Super Mario game and not just Super Mario Galaxy 3. I mean it will still be really cool, but the Wii-u is a new system and theres really NOTHING more exciting when Mario dominates new territorry. I am gonna crap my pants when I see the first footage!

    As much as I love and go back to playing the Super Mario Galaxy games and I enjoy Super Mario 3D Land what I’m really hoping that the next 3D Mario game is more like Super Mario 64 with tons of Big open worlds with tons of different missions. I miss the sense of wonder and the exploration aspect of it

    im still surprised pikmin wasnt on the 3ds. pikmin was so perfect i was expecting it to be the launch title game that represents the 3ds, something like the metroid prime hunters demo for ds. or whatever the heck kid icarus supposed to be.

    I don’t want a new Galaxy either, had enough of those. We need a new setting and basic mechanics merged with new ones. I think this might be a game ONM keeps talking about, here in the UK. They’ve been trying out a secret title at Nintendo lately but won’t reveal it, yet keep mentioning it.

    I too would be happy with a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine, it would be good to go back to big open levels to explore freely, SMG was great but I got a bit sick of the ‘on rails’ feeling. I’m not sure if I’d welcome the return of FLUDD though…. also I’d love if there was some kind of flash back aspect to the game where we get to play as child mario (think ocarina of time) maybe then we’d find out the real reason behind mario and bowsers ongoing feud…

    I wouldn’t mind a SMG3 in general, but for the Wii U, there needs to be something original. Hopefully with an innovation as big as Galaxy had. Sunshine 3 would be perfect, but I think that’d be more suited to the 3DS.

      also wii u can do 3D but Nintendo feels like they want to do it on the 3DS.

    Y’know I’m not so sure what I want in a new 3D Mario game. I like the free roam of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy but it gets repetitive going in and out of the same level about 6 times. 3D Land was also not exactly how I would want it, since it’s literally an sidescrolling Mario, but *echo* IN 3-D, and although I can’t really say this since I don’t own the game, so correct me if I’m wrong, but you do have to play a level only once then move on. If they can make the next 3D Mario sorta like Banjo-Kazooie where you don’t have to exit the level after getting a Star, it’ll be great. If not… well wtf it’s still Mario so it’ll still be fun XD

    I really hope it’s a full budget Mario game, and not like NSMB or SM3DL which are like “experiments”. Also hoping for something new and not the same as galaxy or 64.. might be hard to come up with something. I get the feeling that we’re not going to see it in 2013 lol
