In an interview, Katsuya Eguchi has spoken about the Wii U’s Pro Controller, sharing that its presence “may make it easier for multi-platform games to come out on the system”, and:

Wii remotes don’t have things like analog sticks. To make it as easy as possible to enjoy certain multiplayer experiences it was important to have that Pro controller.

From there, Eguchi explained:

We’re all gamers as well and we appreciate the interest of those [hardcore] gamers, and we don’t want them to feel left out, so we’re making big strides and changes in that area.

Even with the improved control schemes though, people will find something to complain about.

In reality it’s not for gamers, it is actually for lazy developers. That said the wii u will only support 1 gamepad for most games so the pro controller is necessary for games like Smash Bros.

    • KidWiththeBackpack

Definitely for lazy developers because the controller is so similar to the xbox360 controller. However, I think this will be good for games like smash bros. I do think this controller is a good addition, although I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the tablet controller.

    • Redlixer

I’d like to point out that the Wii U can actually support TWO controllers. I’d also like to point out that the Gamecube controller is the best controller out there! At least for it’s time anyway. If it had clickable analog sticks, two “Z” buttons, and those fancy gyroscopes, accelerometers, and geomagnetic sensors, along with whatever else is crammed inside the Wii U Pro Controller (that’s a long name) it would be the best controller ever! The best aspect about the Gamecube’s controller is the layout of the face buttons! You’ve got a huge “A” button which serves as the neutral point for your thumb. And then, the “B”, “X”, and “Y” buttons are all within reach surrounding your thumb like some sort of control deck! I think it’s awesome! Especially for F-ZERO GX where the boost button was right above the accelerate button! Although, it sucks to play the original Donkey Kong Country on the Gamecube controller. If only we could change the button functions within the game itself. Oh well…

    • Redlixer

And has anyone noticed that the Wii U Pro Controller is just a Wii U Gamepad without the screen? The button layout is exactly the same! Except for the start, select, home, and power buttons of course!

    • xdlugia

But there was 2 things the great GameCube controller did not do right: FPS and racers. The C-Stick was smaller and clearly not built for shooters. Also the triggers was great for games like Mario Sunshine, but for repeatedly shooting or racing they were horrible.
The Xbox 360 was made for this and is was the best controller for most games, except platformers (PS3, Wiimote) and fighters (GameCube).

    • Redlixer

I never play FPSs on the Gamecube though, so I guess I wouldn’t know. Lol But it does racers well. NFSU2, MKDD, NASCAR 2005, as some examples (you know what the acronyms stand for, right?)

    • xdlugia

I do, but GameCube always uses ABXY for the gas and brake instead of the sensitive triggers because they don’t fit.
Racers should use sensitive triggers because it makes you able to control your acceleration instead of pedal to the metal whenever you press it.

    • Redlixer

Okay, I see where you’re going with this. I would like to know what you mean’t by “it doesn’t fit”. It worked well for Need for Speed Underground 2 though. That game used the L and R triggers.

    • Ruby Doobie

cool story, I said it will only support 1 gamepad for most games not all of them. And I want to play smash bros with 4 people not 2.

  • truth shal be told ip master

i dont see a HARDCORE COUGH controller in that picture i se the out dated obsolete controller used by people owning ps3s and x360s and use out of shere stubbornness and lack of intelligence…. clear;ly a wiiu gamepad and a wii remote and a w r plus are far more COUGH HARDCORE than a out dated pad

iwata lol at the marketing high 5 the PRO PAD for the HARDCORE lolwink at ya guy we both know its for DUMMY DUMB DUMB CORE GUY and his CASUAL SCOPING lol at twin sticks is core – core fps wankers the lot of um

    • http://youtube.com/user/Schroedus Schroedus

Clearly, someone doesn’t see the Wii U Pro Controller on their screen. Nope. Doesn’t exist at all. *sarcasm*

  • Hybrilynx

i dont know but the classic controller was fine for me when playing dbz.just, for kirby and the crystal shards i dont think there was a z button. to do this password or secret thing i think on the menu. idiots.

  • White Yoshi

what do they think hardcore is? is there going to be 4chan the game?

  • truthbetold

Wow, so much hate going on. I’m happy the pad is here, but I’m also happy there is a bro controller, its what I have wanted to play smash on forever

  • Sonic20012

I like the Wii U GamePad but for something like Smash Bros or Multi-platform games I’m glad they have the Pro Controller. I know it’s looks a lot like the Xbox 360 and the PS3 controllers, but that allows developers to focus on the game their making, rather than wasting time coming up with a good control scheme. I’d rather have developers making games easier and having faster release dates than having to wait 1-2 years (or even 3 years) because they have to figure out and experiment more things. Just sayin’.

  • Marty

I will love the U pro controller just because I love the classic controller pro (even more then the gamecube controller).

  • xdlugia

I love this controller, but the lack of vibration and sensetive triggers makes it not suitable for racers.
I wonder why Nintendo went away from sensetive triggers? The GameCube and the original Classic Controller had it, but neither this or the GamePad has it :/

    • lonewolf88

you’ll probably what to use the gamepad anyways since it has gyro but you could probably still you the buttons me personally i like motion for raceing but everyone likes something diffrent

  • cow creamer

its a classic pad not a pro pad lets all agree on the facts that isnt core vs gamepad or wii remote/plus only an idiot would deem the above core

and its clearly based on wiiu gamepad front and a wavebird/gamecube design LOL @ x360 copy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hmm. That’s weird, because they had no problem making me feel left out last generation….

    • Tails the Foxhound

Funny, I didn’t feel left out at all. Must be because I actually know what a good game looks like.

  • http://www.facebook.com/henrik.puetz Henrik Puetz

this shows 2 things to me:
1st : we may play COD with 4 players , (only offline as I guess),with pro controllers
    2nd:we can play COD with 2 players ,(Multiplayer/Splitscreen offl.),with 2 pads…
the Pads can get the game on their screens , so…
IF any of the COD/BF3(let s say fps) franchises tries to work hard with the WiiU …
There is the possibility of a 6-player-offline mode, isn´t it? ^^Would be veeery funny

    • lonewolf88

why did you bring up cod for this but still the posibilitys for the 2 gamepads and pro controllers are huge but it might get laggy because of the 2 wii u pads

    • http://www.facebook.com/henrik.puetz Henrik Puetz

As an example – I atated BF3/COD/any fps later.
I know fps will suffer , but its possible , and maybe they can manage it – If Nintendo can make 16 GB RAM Stick for Dragon Quest X(correct me if Im wrong) they might use an external USB port with RAM for Wii U too…

  • KOROkokoKokoro-chan iu na

Did you guys know that Activision said to Nintendo: “We won’t be addapting COD to that controller of yours. If you want COD in Wii U, you have to make a normal controller.”

And that’s the true origin of this controller.
And I’m gladd… it looks really nice to use for some games.
