New Super Mario Bros. U is IGN’s “Platformer of the Year”

New Super Mario Bros. U Small

IGN has awarded New Super Mario Bros. U the honour of being their “Platformer of the Year”. The game beat Fez, Rayman Jungle Run, Sound Shapes, and Spelunky take the title and, while I’m sure most of the readers of this blog will agree with the choice, I’m curious: for folks who played the other nominees, did IGN make the right decision?     Yes, I think they did, NSMBU had some surprisingly well designed levels. And I was gonna say that spelunky should have had the title, but Spelunky isnt really a platformer. But well, I havent played or even heard of the other games

    the only thing i like about this game is the cave art. besides that, i wouldnt even bother playing it. it just looks like the same exact game like every other new super mario game.

      thats kinda the idea.. same level format with different puzzles powers and platforming durr….mario aint that different from cod in many aspects .

      you dont get my point of view. just becuz alpha bounce has 25 million levels, doesnt mean its infinite fun. the levels are all different, but just like all the new super marios, its all the same too.

      Possibly SquareEnix, but considering their resources are going to be spread pretty thin while they maintain Dragon Quest 10 during the 8th generation I’m thinking Nintendo should partner up with another third party that makes R.P.G.s. Give that developer a little extra shot of recognition in the gaming community worldwide, a shot in the arm financially, and some incentive to make more Nintendo R.P.G.s.

    In my opinion, I think Fez should’ve won because of its originality and how it showed how awesome indie developers can be, but i’m okay with NSMBU, because it’s easily the best 2D mario game since SMW with a lot of great content, game modes, secrets, variety, and Miiverse functionality.

    I personally thought LBP PS Vita could have won it, but NSMBU was a good contender, and came out on top. All the other games didn’t seem like they could match Mario U, but if they had Vita’s GOTY (LBP Vita) in there, I wouldn’t have known. Probably would have picked Mario

    I deserves it, the only other one on this list that comes close is apparently Sound Shapes from what I’ve heard.

    Damn, love NSMBU, but….damn…I think Fez really did deserve it. The guy who made Fez really busted his butt making that game.

    Apart from treating IGN as anything but a joke: Considering the other nominees are terrible platformers(that doesn’t mean they’re bad games necessarily), that’s not saying much. The game that should have won wasn’t even nominated. Dustforce was robbed, plain and simple. Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams should also have been considered.
