Dylan Cuthbert, who has worked with Nintendo on most of the Star Fox games, has described Shigeru Miyamoto as “a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs”. Or, if you want the full quote:

His style of chasing ideas and cutting through bulls***||| is brilliant. Internally he’s kind of like a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs, but just as cutting.

When asked about Star Fox on the Wii U, Cuthbert said that “the ball’s in Nintendo’s court” and that “those questions are best geared towards Miyamoto”. If only he would answer them.

  • MadCrain

    He’s a bad-ass!

    • MadCrain

      Miyamoto Fo-e-va!

  • johnny

cool, but they should announce a starfox AND a super mario galaxy when they releaase the date and price….

    • Myst

I don’t think Wii U needs a Super Mario Galaxy. It needs its own 3D Mario series.

    • johnny

Eh, still want mario kart :)

    • 009soulmaster

      Super Mario Dimentions.

    • johnny

GUYS WHAT ABOUT MARIO ALL STARS WHERE ITS ALL NINTENDO CHARACTERS IN A NEW SUPER MARIO BROS GAME. LIKE DONKEY KONG, KIRBY, ETC.

    • BlueBlurX

What? No, That wouldn’t make sense at all.

    • TheFarmboy

Personally, I want to see a Mario Sunshine 2.

    • TysonQ7

This x1000. And Kirby Air Ride 2.

  • TysonQ7

Oh Miyamoto. Why are you so amazing?

    • johnny

      cuz he made mario

    • TysonQ7

WRONG! Anyone could make Mario nowadays. But there is something about him, boundless imagination yet the hardened ways of a businessman… This case must be studied further…

      –_-__—-_-__–_—–_—–____-
      *Invasion Delayed*

    • Pete41608

While anyone can make Mario nowadays, what Johnny is saying is Miyamoto-San Created Mario at a time when NO ONE else did. So I say RIGHT not wrong

    • TysonQ7

That doesn’t necessarily make him amazing. If just the games and the experiences mattered, than everyone would praise Sakurai.

      …Because you know, Smash Bros.

    • Arriant

But everyone does praise Sakurai, just not to the same extent. Miyamoto had his hand in far more than just Mario and it could be argued that his ideas and implementations saved the gaming industry.

    • Arriant

But pretty much everyone does praise Sakurai, just not to the same extent. Miyamoto had his hand in far more than just Mario and it could be argued that his ideas and implementations saved the gaming industry. He hasn’t lost his touch either, as you mentioned. All of that contributes to his success.

    • TysonQ7

      …Basically what I said. :3

do these comments auto update or do we still have to refresh the page?

    • Zachary Morris

Autoupdate. I just saw it happen.

    • johnny

yeah but its like a bar on the top that says theres a new message and it asks if you wanna see them, kinda like popular youtube videos where the comments keep coming in and it cant update that much at a time….

    • Ruby Doobie

although there’s now potential for this to become like igns comment thread (as in full of trolls)

    • mrgrimrjs

The more well known the site becomes the more trolls there will be. Build it and they will come.

    • http://youtube.com/user/spacemanpurple Space

It sure is peaceful without “Ness” here.

    • Ness

      What?

  • http://profiles.google.com/xdavidxhoylexx David Hoyle

omgoosh here too. why couldnt disqus make better looking comments. at least remove the fake avatars for people who dont have them. anyway, they just made a freaking starfox game. the freak is metroid? if they want ideas, i can give them a full metroid game in my sleep. or more realistically, every week including cut scenes, maps and bosses.

  • Dark Pit

Now that you mentioned it, i see him as a gaming version of Steve Job btw David there’s a new console that awfully looks like the Wii U’s game pad/ 3DS combined! http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Multiformat/JXD+S5100/news.asp?c=42884 “A new challenger has appeared”… again

      pikachu uses steel wing

johnny throws a ultra ball at the wild wii U/3ds

      *shake shake shake*

the wid wii U/3ds was caught!

Would you like to add a nickname for your wild wii U/3ds?

wii U/3ds was added in box 1 of the pc.

sorry i dont play pokemon now but i think its like that, right?

    • KarjamP

How can Pikachu know Steel Wing if he doesn’t have visible wings?

A more appropriate attack would be “Iron Tail”.

    • johnny

its looks more of the bottom of the 3ds xl….

    • MadCrain

That’s pretty ugly, if it’s made by China it’s probably a bad imitation.

    • TheFarmboy

Wonder if that design was used before the Analog sticks were added.
That thing being featured in a future Ashens video, called it.

    • http://Nintendoworlds.com/ TurboPikachu

      A chinese joke. -.-
Anyone remember the chinese competitor to the DSi, the Dingoo? It looked like a Game Boy Micro adopted the DSi’s added face buttons.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingoo

    • Kehool

      yeah i remember the dingoo
a friend of mine got one
it was actually pretty decent but no real competitor to any of the big handhelds at that time^^
it did allow for emulation tho which was neat
videos/ebooks aswell of course, and it could be connected to another screen
for that price it was a steal

    • Big E

What about the Vii and its motion controller?

  • johnny

    Guys i have a question?

Like the wii U pro right, is it like its own remote or is it attached to the gamepad?

oh and why does it have only 4 lights when some games have up to 5 players. Like doesnt the gamepad count?

    • johnny

anyone? please respond! and thanks for liking this :)

    • Buzzeh

The Pro Controller is its own thing, that syncs directly to the console unlike the Wii Controller Pro

And i cant answer your second question but i think that wold be right

    • johnny

THANKS! THAT MEANS I CAN GET TWO REMOTES! WAHOO!

    • ePik Min

You don’t need 5 lights if the 5th players uses the tablet-controller.

  • Luciano Fran

    • ABEzilla116

      Jobs was an ass.

    • ryanstylee

How do you know? Did you personally know him? No.

    • matt

Every interview about Jobs I’ve seen says he’s an asshole. I think they mean to say that he gets the job done and cuts through the BS like Jobs does.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zimmer-Remmiz/100001573602233 Zimmer Remmiz

Jobs screamed at employees, parked in handicapped spots, and stole tech in the early days of Apple, he was a pedigree asshole…

    • Kaizar

      I agree with ABEzilla116.

I saw 60 minutes do a report a Steve Jobs, and he was a totally spoil Jackass of an asshole who NEVER had any emotions, nor human emotions at all, LITERALLY.

I wouldn’t even cal Steve Jobs a Human being.

I would call him something, like a thing.

      Steve Jobs was a thing,…..NOT a person.

      BITE MY SHINY METAL ASS!

    • BR!4N

      New catchphrase?

    • SilentBates

if u knew anything about apple you would know that steve is a jack ass… forcing his workers to fight against one another forcing them to stay up for 3 days straight making lines of code?!? watch the movie about him it shows exactly what he was like…also he was hippie tripping on acid

    • http://twitter.com/Revolution5268 Revolution

    • Total911

Miyamoto genuinely loves his job and savors every moment that he can do it. He’s not working, he’s living.

    • Co-Wink-Key dink inc

You and David are all racist, and I am 12 years old and i am smarting then all of you Nintendo Fanboys.

The fact is that Sony PS3 & PS Vita are each more powerful then the Wii U & 3DS combine.

    • Total911

Well I’ll be damned. It says you’re unregistered and you don’t have a gravatar. You’re just posing as Co-Wink-Key dink. I thought this stuff was finished when we switched over to Disqus.

    • http://twitter.com/Revolution5268 Revolution

love the “Yay! I’m surrounded by plushies” pic

    • mayker

The quote should be more like “Steve Jobs is like a less friendly Shigeru Miyamoto”

  • Zack

He really does seem like a cool guy… He’s always smiling and just having fun making and playing games.

    • johnny

I wanna be a game developer too. Its my dream, but i probably wont be hired by nintendo :(

    • ABEzilla116

Learn Japanese and get serious about it. The only way you’ll do it is by trying. It doesn’t happen a lot but it’s possible. Although you’d probably be better off working for retro studios, or another developer based outside japan.

    • TysonQ7

Just how many Nintendo Developers are outside Japan?

    • Kehool

developers? close or equal to none

    • Kehool

get acquainted with photoshop and get cracking on programs like maya to build models, maps for existing games etc. there should be plenty tutorials to go around in the internet
also hone your programming skills with c, c++ and the likes and take any programming courses at your school you can get your hands on

in college you should study video game design of course
there are also special schools focusing on game design such as this one https://www.digipen.edu/
it may not be a bad idea to check those out

getting into nintendo itself prolly won’t be possible without 1: speaking japanese and 2: having prior experience with creating games in another company
so you should start learning japanese aswell and as soon as you’re done with college try to hire at a company that employs game designers without prior experience in the job, work for them a couple years, and then you may have a shot at nintendo ;)

you should be aware tho that being a game designer is a job that is very unlikely to make you rich, neither at nintendo nor anywhere else
if that doesn’t bother you then go ahead

    • Vulpix

I want to become a video game designer as well (and not stereotyping but I’m a girl!) Just start working toward your dream like finding free video game software, there are plenty of free and inexpensive software if you search on google. Also Kehool is right Digipen is a great school as well as Fullsale University. And make sure you learn Japanese and Japanese lifestyle if you want to work with Nintendo since they don’t make games in any other countries only localize. Keep at it and work hard and I’m sure you’ll make it,next thing you know we’ll see your name in the credits.

    • Seb

Like Kehool said, get into Photoshop, Maya and all that sort of stuff. It really depends what you want to be, lighting specialist, modeler, animator, surfacing, director, story board writer, code writer, editor etc. There are many things you can do. It is more likely you will get into the industry if you are specialised in several different areas. You also must be super talented and artictic, and love your job.

  • Tails the Foxhound

To be compared to such a great mind is an honor. Steve Jobs should be proud. :P

    • ABEzilla116

Do you know anything about the way Steve Jobs was!? Its more of an insult than anything.

    • Big E

Do you know how Steve Jobs was? I thought he was dead. Not much of a comparison. Heh heh….The only person who knows how Steve was in life were his closest friends and relatives. Nobody else does. There is a difference in both a work and personal life.

    • TysonQ7

…So Miyamoto is a better person in both parts of life? :3

    • ABEzilla116

A book was written about him by someone very close to him. Damn near everyone knows.

    • Big E

Yeah, everyone who read the damn thing. I didn’t know there was a book…I do know about a movie though.

    • ABEzilla116

      A movie now… ugh.

    • Pete41608

A movie starring ASHTON KUTCHER!!! LOL

    • http://twitter.com/Revolution5268 Revolution

next thing U know they will make a game base on him for the iPhone.

    • Kaizar

      ABEzilla116 is right.

I saw a “60 minutes” report on him, and he was pure evil.

He NEVER had any emotions (including human emotions).

Who always felt like he was the only person who derseve any democratic rights.

Ahe was a spoil self-center jackass, who thought that if he felt like doing something that would physically harm others, like even kill someone, that he was the one person on the planet that should have the right to do so, and not be punish for it.

He always felt like he was above the LAW, and that he should be above the LAW…….he was pure evil on the inside.

And brain cancer seems to always happen to white people…. I think it has something to do with a person way of thinking that ever causes Brain cancer, but that’s my theory.

    • Kaizar

And usually the people you hear about getting brain cancer is someone who physiologically isn’t right in the head.

Which is why I think it is cause by a certain mentality, most the time.

      MINT BERRY CRUNCH!

  • NinjaFart

    :P

He should do more unique projects like Pikmin.

    • The Random Man

Your wish was granted a couple months before you made it. Miyamoto is working on a brand new IP along with Pikmin, Luigi’s Mansion, and whatever else there is.

  • Bicentennial_Pidgeon

    Miamoto-san is also significantly more…alive.

Hopefully more than slightly more friendly, Jobs was a prick…

  • SleepyGuyy

Yes because “cutting through bull****” is what everyone thinks when you say Steve Jobs… *internet sarcasm*

  • SleepyGuyy

I think another key difference (though it is irrelevent when talking about co-workers… So I see why this comment compared the two people)… The other difference is that Miyamoto has respect for the industry he works in and thrives on seeing it stay alive… not crumble it down as he wades through the city, breathing fire on all the innocents.

  • Vulpix

Miyamoto being nice = being nice to his fans and gamers = More great first party games!

Miyamoto is a GENIUS, steve jobs wasn’t, keep dreaming Cuthbert.
You can try compare jobs and iwata but with miyamoto? keep it real.

  • RequiredName

So he’s calling Miyamoto a hipster douchebag? That sentiment doesn’t seem very nice. I always imagined Miyamoto as a relaxed sort of guy with a metropolitan style of class.

  • http://www.facebook.com/henrik.puetz Henrik Puetz

Well this is a pretty praising state isnt it.Though Ithink this guy got it right.Miyamoto IS actually like Steve Jobs , making great innovations being sold by Nintendo :D

  • ChainOfUnfortunateEvents

No, that’s an insult. Miyamoto is no ass.

I should slap him silly for even saying that Miyamoto is only slightly friendly.

Miyamoto is one of those people who could hug the scariest animals and they wouldn’t try to maul the crap out of his face.

    • Doopliss

Who are you to know how Miyamoto’s behaviour is when he is not surrounded by camera’s? The brainwashed people here… >.>

    • Ice Climbers

Off-camera? He’s been preparing Nintendo for when he does retire because Nintendo does rely on him a lot. He’s mentoring new, younger developers so that new franchises and new ideas to current ones can be brought to life.

    • josh

miyamoto is the best i’m Q_Q because he will retire in a few years Q_Q

im taking an IT program in college so i can be like miyamoto-sama, he inspired me to be what i am and what i will be, i will work hard so i can bring joy to people through AAA games that doesnt require guns or too much gore, like master miyamoto had done. he made me realize what i wanted to do in my life. he’s like a hero to me, along with all his masterpieces. :) :D…steve jobs…. well he kinda emptied my uncle’s wallet. and my cousins… and…. yea.. dunno lol.

  • http://PolyKhromeGames.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

I think some people here are missing the point of this statement. Dylan’s is only comparing Miyamoto to Steve Jobs because they’ve both led their companies to the success they are today, and they’re both known to be uncompromising and determined in realizing their visions. Miyamoto is not a total ass to work with as Jobs reportedly was, though there is a reason why Donkey Kong is supposed to be a subtle caricature of Miyamoto. The man’s the reason why the phrase “flip the tea table” is a concept at Nintendo.

  • dkr725

    Miyamoto is f*****g awesome.
