Miyamoto confirms a new Super Mario Bros. game to be shown at E3 2012

In an interview, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U will be shown off at E3 2012. Considering we already saw New Super Mario Bros. Mii as a tech demo last year, I think the game will be an expansion of that but it’s not completely clear. There’s always that (slight) chance they took it in a different direction. But we’re only a month and a half from the big event, so it’s not long now.

There’s also a quick mention of Pikmin, but Miyamoto simply confirms he’s still working on it, while also saying he has a other “small but important projects for Wii U” in the works.

Update: The assumption I made was right, it seems. This is what Nintendo said:

…a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year’s E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year’s E3 Expo.

But I’m sure there’ll be plenty of surprises, too.

    All right looks like Im first I personally dont think it will be the super mario bros they showed at e3 I think it will be that rumored super mario 4 game I heard about and I think it will be a 3D platformer or a modern super mario world.What do you guys think it will be?

      I also believe a 3D full HD mario game would be absolutely beautiful on the Wii U and could really show off what the console can do.

      Well accd. to the update4 looks like well have to settle for another 2D sidescroller.Lets hope Nintendo makes a 3D mario game in the future.

      i am sure they will make another 3D Mario Game for the Wii U, but 3D games are a bit harder to develop so it will take them a little time.

      not another mario galaxy PLEASE! make a new one in a new kind of enviroment i’m sick of MG :p and a mario bros! yessss i hope it ‘ll be close at launch because this is next to mariokart my personal fav. i unlocked w9 on all 3 of my savegames thats hom much i play it (and i’m not really in to hte whole coin finding thing)

    I think it’s a 3D Mario, especially since it’s 1080p and It would make sense having a 3D Mario to show off the graphics.

    Personally, I’m hoping that it’s a 3D Mario game and that it’s making it for launch, but that would depend on how long it’s been in development. I’m sure a 2D game will come in the future, but right now, I’d like the former to really start off the console’s life with a bang and draw in the casual crowd and hardcore fans from the beginning.

    A true sequel to SM64 would be fantastic and with this being Nintendo’s first HD console and it having a innovative yet still fully functional controller it now makes a lot of sense to finally make one. I doubt it will be a 2d platform as they have already got so many of them and I don’t think that would be the best way for them to show of the hardware, but we will see.

    Think about this, EAD1 (the group behind Galaxy) haven’t made a game since 2007 (Galaxy 1). Galaxy 2 and 3D Land were made by EAD2. Now if I recall correctly, Nintendo stated that the Wii U was planned/started in 2007/2008, and that they used their franchises to help build aspects of the console, ie Zelda. That means EAD1 has had five years to prep and develop a game we could see on launch day, or maybe launch month. Or I’m just overthinking.

    anyone else think that this game and the 2D 3ds mario game are going to be almost the same, or at least have some cross play features.

      Yes, that’s exactly what I thought when I saw the update. Miyamoto’s announced a new sidescrolling 2D platformer for the 3DS which will release between now and April 2013 and this will likely be a Wii U launch title meaning by the end of the year so they’re probably the same game with cross platform capabilities like Super Smash Bros.

    In Nintendo’s statement they say “a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U” With the word new being all lower case, it doesn’t mean it’s a new New Super Mario Bros. game. It could very well be a new 3D game. What I would like to see the Wii U Mario game be:

    2D: A game with the longest and most challenging yet rewarding levels and new environments and other new things but bring back some stuff from other 2D Mario games too like Vegetables from Super Mario Bros.2/USA, Vehicle levels from Super Mario Land and if it’s multi-player Maybe Bowser or (Insert villain here) Has stolen something important and Mario, Luigi. Toad and Peach have to retrieve it so you could have the SMB2 cast(With all their differences) playable instead of just 2 Toads and Luigi who all move like Mario.

    3D: Make a new Super Mario 64 style game. I recently started playing Super Mario 64 and I imagined what it would be like playing a Mario platform game like that but with huge worlds and using the Wii U’s capabilities

      About the 3D game: YES!! We need another Mario game like 64 with huge worlds and lots of exploration. SM64 was epic!

    I hope it’s not a big repeat of new Super Mario Bros. Wii, otherwise I’m probably not getting it. But, I’m expecting something good, Hopefully we’ll also see the 3DS Mario game.

    To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the Mario bros. games. I’ve played The first one, the first new super Mario bros. and NSMB Wii, and I really regret getting NSMB Wii over Super Mario Galaxy 2. The only Mario bros game I liked was the DS one, but I’m a big fan of the 3D games like galaxy and sunshine.

      I have a good feeling that we’ll get at least a release date at E3. Probably a trailer too. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a September–November release date.

    Honestly didn’t LOVE the NSMB games, too generic feeling. Last year’s demo was pretty reheated.
