It’s supposed to be a month to bring more to the forefront of our remembrance the significant contributions that African-Americans have done, particularly towards bringing awareness to America’s youth, who generally have very little knowledge or care about our nation’s history to begin with. If some people want to make this month as something forced or it another render its as something trite, they’re both missing the point of its designation.

Not that history is or should be confined to just a month, but not too long ago, there was a time where NO history of black Americans (and other minorities) got any public awareness or respect. Many lives of great people who, if it weren’t for such initiatives toward promoting their history as a great part of American history, would get no notice at all.

Black History Month is not some agenda pretending to make one remember or care–it’s a dedicated month where people make a little more effort to not forget where from which we as a nation came. Any month’s a good month to learn a little about our nation’s history, history from any sides, but this month is just a time promoted as a time for education on a subject not predominant in our history books even today–black American history.

Sometimes in these regular reminders, some individuals somewhere pick something up. Sometimes these moments of recognition work. In any case, it’s nothing to be annoyed about. If one doesn’t particularly care for this mean of public awareness, they still should consider that some people do learn from it. Any good it does is good.

Those who forget the past are often either doomed to repeat it or not doomed to take their present for granted–and most American youth today lean towards that latter one. They tend to take their freedoms for granted, living too comfortable in the luxuries our forefathers laid down. A little reminder is the least we can do for our nation, our histories, and our progeny.

I grew up with an interest in the subject myself (as well as just history in general) and, yeah, it is sad to see how so many folks confine it all to just this month, only to soon trivialize it afterwards once public
interest is gone.

You’re right there when you talk about this phenomenon of public
interest being because they were to have a sudden and rather imposed interest on the subject rather than their checking it out of natural curiosity and gaining a respect for the history. I do find that most people in life just aren’t curious enough about life.

Though, still, it seems that many of the few who do pick up an interest and respect for the historical subjects of black Americans did so because of Black History Month, rather than a natural interest before the month. There’s something good in that, but something rather sad in that at the same time.
