Turns out the rumors were true. Friend codes will be no more with the Wii U. Instead there will be a single online identity, in a similar vein to Gamertags in Xbox Live. This information was revealed in relation to Ghost Recon: Online, which is one of games on display at E3 2011. You can see a video of it here.

    YESSSSSS!

  • bmcj199

    YES! Nintendo fans rejoice!

  • Mesan

    Aww the hell yeah girl

  • ChiquitaBanana

Hallelujah! I was hoping to high Heaven that they’d be gone! It’s a miracle! :D This is beginning to reassure me that Nintendo has got the whole online system thing down for the Wii U. I don’t care if they had to get outside help in order to do it, cause they really needed it. They can’t set up an online system themselves for beans.

  • CBreeze5g

Yes, yes, and hell yes!!! Nintendo is doing this right, and David I’d just like to thank you for all the effort you put into this site and giving us the latest info it’s truly appreciated.

  • dubYA

Huzzah! Hooray! Yippee!!! WAHOO!!!!!!!!!! F*CK YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is all.

  • zxride64

This is great news for a lot of gamers, maybe the 3ds will receive a later on that will implement this. Nintendo is getting themselves together on the online component of there systems so far.

  • Gimpyfish62

    YYYEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh

  • chinomania

    yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeessssssssss!!!!

  • Dex

YYYEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS! Great news! I don’t mind the single friend code for the 3ds, but it would be terrible to have them again on a home console.

  • sony

    NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • Crazyhobo100

Uh hello? Don’t we still have to give each other our online I.D.s or whatever just to play together?

  • Crazyhobo100

    I ment IDs

  • Solanin

    lol

  • ChiquitaBanana

I’m assuming it’s more efficient, ex. you can send friend requests to all your friends and they just click “add,” or you send friend requests to them. If it’s as awesome as it sounds (I’ve been looking up other stuff on their new online system), then it shouldn’t be a hassle at all. Also, I’m sure it’s just one user name for the person/system, so you don’t have to enter a code for every single different game (like it was for Friend Codes).

  • Zebra

    AAAAWWWWWWWWW YEEEAAAHHH!!! lol

  • ryan the lion

i read that only ubisoft is doing this so far and that nintendo has not yet had an official anouncment….. via kotaku.

  • George Tirebiter

You are correct, Ryan. Ubisoft confirmed they will allow account-based online for their games, but they are leaving an announcement or denial of an account-based Nintendo online to the big N themselves.

Based on the fact Reggie said their online will be on par with Xbox Live and PSN (minus the recent hacks, of course), I’d expect this to end up being true anyway.

  • George Tirebiter

Oh, I guess it’s true. No more friend codes. I wonder why they didn’t make a bigger announcement through the company @ E3. That would’ve been a great moment in the conference. Probably because they don’t want to draw attention to past errors, but still they could’ve made a somewhat bigger deal about it.

  • chinomania

Is it just me or does Nintendo keep making important announcements after e3. Which I really dont mind… It is like a new surprise everyday…. teehee

  • Brandon

They should have done that with the 3DS.

  • Says

+ Infinity to you my friend.

  • Says

Hopefully they don’t stop there. Make everything that you possibly can better, Nintendo! Imagine if nintendo actually took the top spot at online gaming. that would put sony’s tail between their legs hahaha.

  • larsberg

But if nobody is forced to go to the painfull friendcode entry, how will I know they are true friends?

  • Wildman

    Movin’ on up!
Groovy stuff. I’m looking forward to this new Wii. How about U?

  • Mucrush

I have never had a problem with the FCs, but… yay xD

  • Nintendo

    *Puts on shades* 8)

  • Muramasa

Nice, I hated those. Go Nintendo!

  • LEMONZ

David if you got the Wii u (which you probably will cause of your utube channel) give me your gamertag or what it’s called so i can kill your azz at SSB :)

  • LEMONZ

    wii <3 u miyamoto

  • Carlos Diaz

Uhm. Are you sure they’re gone? I remember Ubisoft merely saying

    THIS IS NINTENDO’S CHOICE.

They haven’t revealed anything yet, unless I’m mistaken.

  • xxccxx

Thats great and all but is it changing on the 3ds cuz i wants to pay smash bros and conect with wii friends!

  • The One Who Wrote This

    Lol!!

  • Tritan

I hope they get rid of them on 3ds later on so you can share account on both consoles

  • Milk

Maybe this was a plot from Nintendo. Put friend codes on several of their systems until people start hating them. Then, release a console without friend codes, and voila: everyone likes them twice as much.

  • Marc Nield

They were holding out for the ability to produce an amazing security system and the like..let’s hope they don’t charge for the service! Slow and steady wins the race :)

  • Nollog

He said officially that “That’s for Nintendo to reveal” when asked at the developer roundtable.

  • GwJumpman

While I don’t THINK there will be friend codes, it is not confirmed to be gone by any means. All we’ve seen is that Ubisoft is supporting it. They didn’t say if it’s system-wide or a game-only name.

  • Joseph

Just like M. Bison would say, “YESSH”.

  • Brown_yoshi

    That is absolutely awesome!!
How come they didn’t talk about this at their conference?!

  • theguythatlikespie

    lol

  • Crazyhobo100

    Thats what I’m wondering

  • Crazyhobo100

    I like pie lol :-D

  • Dustman

Please do and host online tournaments

  • Meelow

    YESSSSSSSSSS:D

  • Dantewolfwood

    THANK YA JESUS!!!!
