Nintendo to change the name of the Wii U?

According to CVG, "serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level [at Nintendo] in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give [the Wii U] a different name."

And this makes a lot of sense.

There's been a lot of confusion in regards with the 3DS name, for instance. A lot of people still think it's just another DS rather than a new console. The same thing could happen with the Wii U. We'll probably have to wait until E3 though until they reveal their final decision.

Thank goodness for that, the name Wii U is worse than Wii!

Nintendo stream is cool, something like that, just not wii u please.

David, you did a typo: "The same thing could easily -happy- with the Wii U." Don't you mean 'happen'? LOL.

I liked Nintendo Stream. Wii U is just stupid and awkward to say...

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDerek

I've gotten so used to the name, but if it had to change i would go with Stream.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMike S

I want it to be Stream... not wii u. The Virtualboy and N64 had proto names they used in Nintendo Power. (wait, was it N64? I forgot but I think so)

I never minded the name, but I recognize that many people do. The only thing I'm worried about is how everyone will react to Nintendo going back on what they said if they decide to rebrand. I just don't want to hear a bunch of haters saying "Nintendo can't make their own decisions, they aren't even a video game company" and so on.

do you mean happen not happy?

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteraaron

Oh you meant "Easily Happen" I was confused at the Happy. But I think that a name change is in order. Nintendo Nexus maybe?

I'm so used to the name 'Wii U' that I kinda don't want it to change anymore.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoshua

please change it nintendo! you could do so much better!

what do you guys want it to be called?

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterstaticscar96

The name doesn't matter so much to me, even if it is ridiculous. Maybe they will finallly go with Nintendo Revolution.

I can understand the confusion around the 3DS, I mean we had the DS, then the DS lite and the DSi which are all variations of the same system from 2004. The name 3DS would make the uninformed think its just a DS that cam display things in 3D but people didn't seem to have this problem with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom when it came out. All Nintendo did was add the word Super to the Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System and it was never confused with its predecessor.

The Wii wasn't a bad system in my opinion. I have the Wii60 combo and I enjoy both. A true gamer can find a good game on the Wii and enjoy it. There were lots of enjoyable games on both of my platforms however my opinion doesn't represent all of the "Hardcore" crowd. I always thought if Nintendo was to contiue the Wii name they'd call it the Super Wii just like the SNES

THANK GOD!! Lol i was really worried about this too.
And I don't think "Stream" would be a good name for it. I mean think about it. All current systems have a unique name. It's very distinct from just usual words. "Playstation." "Xbox." Everyone immediately knows that they are game systems. But "Stream?" Idk.. Just imagine "Hey i just got a stream." "What? A stream of what? Water stream, what?" "Nooooo the Nintendo system."
I think there would be confusion.
But the fact there's a new title is extremely exciting. No more "Wii, Wii U, - DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS - Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox Kinect, Xbox 720 - Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4" etc.
A brand theme to evolute from. FINALLY. It's very exciting >:) I can't wait!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was starting to get used to the name "Wii U". Well, I guess they should call it the:

"Nintendo Revolution",
"Nintendo Stream"
"Nintendo Infinity"
"NMS - Nintendo Multimedia System"
"Nintendo UltraPower"
"The Nintendo"
"Nintendo Optima"

Which name branding sounds like a good fit? I can't wait to hear your respones. :)

@StarTropics People were a lot smarter back then.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAquaFire

Nintendo MMXII

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArturo Flores

I still vote the Nintendo Stream :D. Especially if they include any cloud-based gaming, which can be a plus once it's perfected more!

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDae

i desperately hope that they change that HORRIBLE name. WII U? What? Who thought of that? ANYTHING would be better. The Nintendo Anything.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPerry

I think I'm crazy but I actually like the name Wii U . . .

. . . or I'm just too used to it.

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLogan

Almost every name people come up with sounds worse than Wii U if you think about it, think of people using the name in discussion like "What Infinity game do you want to play?", or "I want Mario Kart Stream for my birthday." or even "Where can I buy a Super Wii?".

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbill

What would be nice would be if they had a completely new name like NINTENDO REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentertuly

Nintendo, just call it simply..."Nintendo."

January 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrian L.

Maybe they could just call it "Nintendo Entertainment SystemHD" NESHD its simple, its catchy, and I'm sure people who grew up with it will recognize it and associate it with the good ol days of gaming. Whatt do you guys and gals think?
