Recently, there were patent designs that suggested the circle pads on the tablet controller for the Wii U were being replaced with traditional analog sticks. Based on the above photo that a QA tester sent out via Twitter, it seems like the change is what we’ll be seeing in the final product. What do you think?

  • Rizsparky

    intersting……

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

      look atop…

      THE 3DS CHARGER?!?!

It’s probably a pro to type, the analog sticks are too close to the corner.

It’s a ugly controller and disarranged.
And what’s with the pointless rubber squares?
and one right between the battery and power, whats the point? its not a clam shell.

    • Beat

      I think it’s a button?

    • ebgeer

      Probably covering up screws.

    • Trulaw

David I don’t know whether you saw my previous comment, but this Aliens Colonial Marines Interview may make a good post. http://uk.gamespot.com/aliens-colonial-marines-2012/videos/aliens-colonial-marines-interview-with-randy-pitchford-6377485/ the Wii U stuff starts at about 07:20

    • 3lJUAN

SO THERE IS NO NAME CHANGE TO THE WII so its final name is WII U….

    • Link

The square next to the power butten is to move content from tv to controler
Playing on ty, push butten, playin on controler

    • A Link to the Present

@Link but at E3, both screens were just displaying the same thing at once with NSMBMii. Also, there is a button just like it on the left.

    • Link

I was playing on my Wii U and my ass hole brother came in and sad “Hay its a time to whatch some baseball bitch!” so i only played on my controller :(
E3 and my house are so diffrent

    • BOWMAN

Wow everybody was bitching about the analogs now that they changed it they want the other ones back.

    • Naner

@A Link to the Present: The Zelda demo at E3 clearly showed that you could view the whole content on either the TV or the controller or put the main view on the TV and an auxiliary view on the controller.

And the one on the left doesn’t look like a button.

    • Elctric

yes it looks like you can play Game cube games !!

  • Rizsparky

I hope to god its comfortable to play with, the dpad looks kinda small in ratio with the space surrounding it, cant wait for E3!

    • jdub

If its uncomfortable, buy a grip. Problem solved

  • Dan

    Definitely no name change then…

    • Trulaw

I think this is just an updated one perhaps just for QA and they have time to change the name and colour.

  • Ipoopedonyou

looks like too big of a square in comparison to how much of a controller they need.. I mean, the screen isn’t that big. it seems like the controller is more bulky than it should be

    • Trulaw

      Yeah.

    • Trulaw

If they just change it to a black colour not only will it look smaller but it will also mean that the screen and sensor bar will blend in making it look less messy. Nintendo say they want to attract the core ardency first this time, so the lunch colour should be more in tune with that. They can always bring out a white one later.

    • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/16a07c1e06c4010a42f31cc4d1a0702d.png ABEzilla116

IMO, a big controller is never a bad thing… I loved the Xbox 360 controller for that reason.

    • Trulaw

@ABEzilla116 Yes but The XBOX controller was black.

    • GThing64

Lunch colour? I’d like mine in tomato red.

    • Trulaw

@GThing64 LOL, I left out the a. Launch*

    • my name is of no importance

      hey g-thing, i have u as a friend on my 3ds

  • junior

I think its better than circle pads. Cannot wait for E3

  • Kaizar

I want the circle pads back.

They more better for hardcore gameplay.

And it takes less than a whole to get use to circle pads for casual play.

And circle pads work instantly perfect in all hardcore gameplay.

And they move to the same direction in 1/3 the amount of time of a joystick.

Give us our Circle Pads back, PLEASE!!!!!!!!

User experience with both Joysticks & Circle Pads.

    THIRD POWER!

    • Kaizar

But the rest of the control schemes, can stay the same.

And is that a 3DS AC adapter, charging the Wii U controller?

      MINT BERRY CRUNCH!

    • gaming anal-ist

that’s my point the pads seem able to be that bit more precise and more mouse-ish like than sticks it would compansate for the lack of a wii remote when playing via the wiiu pad

imagine a slide pad under your right thumb sliding around it would mimic mouse better than a stick as it would act like a thumb nub on a DS screen but in a fixed position this would make curser aiming moving more like a wii remote and less like a stick

iv loved the natural motion of aiming in say COD on the wii ,i dont want to loose that and go RETARD GAMER with robotic clunky camera motion that you get on COD ETC for say x360 its unnatural and robotic and relys on software gimping the aim and having nonsense like quick scoping instead of mouse clean clear aim and cam and SKILL AIMING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Captain Falcon

If the pads would be clickable, then it’s perfect.

    • CrimsonalCore

^ What he said. Clickable is good.

    • zeta

I actually think this (the analog version) was the previous version as is mentioned here: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/02/wii_u_controller_originally_had_proper_analogue_sticks

      @Captain Falcon
According to this: “www.nintendoenthusiast.com/rumour-wii-u-features-clickable-circle-pads/” it does

    • zeta

well i should say it might, as that is just a rumor about clickable circle pads

    • Trulaw

@zeta I hope they can click, its quite important for a lot of games.

    • dipah master224

      I agree

    • http://nintendoworlds.com TurboPikachu

The Wii U controller should retain the slide pads. I mean, the 3DS has one, so why can’t its console counterpart?!

Also, clickable is cool, but I would want that on slide pads rather than control sticks.

    • uhga buga

yup im with you for the circle pads i love it on 3ds waaaay more precise than stick.

Now if they cant make clickable pads then clickable sticks would be ok if they were just sticks….. that’s fail. fps games can work without click sticks so we’ll see what happens.

they could also use maybe the sides of the screens for extra buttons too.

  • gaming anal-ist

pads look better and i thought they might be a good idea as you would roll them kind off under your thumb witch would be more mouse like than a stick, but if theres an issue or something then why not change to sticks,,,there very nunchuck looking analogs and thats a great thing…gamecube pad/wavebird/nunchuck have the greatest analog stick feel of any controller ever ,they continue or improve on that im a happy man, will still want to fps and 3rd person action game with a wii remote a analog stick cannot compare….

    • Captain Falcon

Agree. Wavebird analog sticks are too good.

    • zeta

Maybe if they change the control scheme to have the nunchuk movement dictate the turning or some such like then it would be even better, although the controls fit Metroid like a glove even with that quick turning issue. If they can do this then i would say EVERY game on the Wii U of the shooter genre should use the Wii remote and stick, also if they make it more precise in-game then the Zelda games should do the same.

Aka I agree totally the pads seem great and people have said such like and the wii remote and nunchuck should see good use

  • Sadsa

-.- I wish 3ds bottom half would look like a miniature version of it

    • Poopman

-.- It’s fine the way it is

    • Viridi

      That would be cool!

    • Poopman

      Shut the fuck up Viridi

    • Rhino Pubes

@poopman so your fine with the ridges scratching the screen when the 3DS is closed?

  • Captain Falcon

Please be clickable analog sticks… please.

And any idea why the changed placement of the Start/Select was necessary?

    • BlazinZzetti

Maybe so players do not have to reach to the very bottom of the controller to pause a game. The new placement allows you to simply reach with your thumb, which should help when you need to pause or make changes quick during online play.

    • Belinni

Yeah, the controller is pretty big as it is. Wouldn’t want people with small hands complaining that they die constantly in games because they can’t reach the pause button fast enough.

    • Big E

I have huge hands and I have trouble reaching the pause, start, and home buttons on the 3DS. My second biggest gripe about the system. Here’s to hoping the WiiU controller is like the one pictured above.

    • http://nintendoworlds.com TurboPikachu

      Clickable analog sticks? No….

Clickable slide pads? Yes yes yes!!!!!

  • Rhino Pubes

    Analog Sticks!!! PHUCK YES!

    • austen

i know right the stupid pads slip under my thumb!

  • Guy

I’m glad to see they switched to analog sticks. Personally I find a joy stick more comfortable than the 3DS circle pad. When I played Zelda on 3DS holding up for a long time while crossing Hyrule Field would cause it to slowly slip towards the center. A small issue, but annoying either way.

    • Kaizar

But they drastically have improved on the Circle Pads technology for the Wii U.

So you wouldn’t have that problem with the E3 2011 Wii U Tablet Controller Circle Pad.

      MINT BERRY CRUNCH!

  • BlazinZzetti

I like the new design. Thumb sticks would be nice, especially if they click when pressed like the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers. They are going to need it if they want to have hardcore games like Call of Duty and Battlefield. I also like how the buttons are not directly below the thumb sticks so your thumbs do not have to reach as far to press them. Same goes for the plus and minus buttons. I hope that the final design does not stray to far from this design.

    • XZAceXZ

I agree with you on everything except calling Call of Duty hardcore. Call of Duty is only fun for multiplayer!

  • AquaFire

    Hell yeah
Now this is what I want

    • AquaFire

You know what now that i take a second look at it.Why the hell is it so big?

  • SONIC2011

I agree with Kaizar. Circle Pads are easier, so I hope this is not the final product.

    • http://nintendoworlds.com TurboPikachu

      ^^^^ Agreed

  • SONIC2011

I liked the E3 2011 design better, especially with the circle pads.

  • Matt

What are those two squares? One below the D-Pad and one to the left of the ‘power’ button.

  • DMT4030

Im going to spray pant my Wii U Red When it comes out

    • zeta

I think i’ll go black, but i really think they should release with both black and white standard

    • person (formerly person)

What purpose would putting red pants on your console serve? Would it fix ventilation problems?

  • Captain N

I believe the square underneath the directional pad is a thumb scroller like they have on blackberry phones……..the square by the power button is probably a sync button to link the controller to the console or maybe its to turn on voice chat……those are my guesses.

I’m glad they have joysticks because messages boards were blowing up when they first showed off the controller with everyone complaining they wanted joysticks.

As for them moving the start and select…I prefer them were they were on the bottom. Plus the controller looks a little bigger than last time…..they really should trim the fat a little more.

    • Matt

The button near the d pad is probably to switch from the tv to the controller. I don’t think you’d need a thumb scroller because you have a giant touch screen right there.

Other people brought up the fact that it would be easier to hit the start button because it’s closer. Owning a 3DS I’d agree with the move because it is harder and annoying to go down to press it, especially when you have to press it hard (at least on the 3DS).

  • http://1227.com/ XDLugia

    NO!!
It’s ugly! Very ugly! The old one was sexy, this one is ugly as hell! Circle Pads looked better than sticks and they are not parallel with the D-Pad and ABXY buttons…
Also those screw-covers are horribly placed!

Good luck with your sales know Nintendo…

My only hope is that when they changed it to analogue sticks, they also changed the shoulder buttons to sensetive triggers, they will need that to keep up.

    • BlueHawk007

Who cares if it is ugly? If it works better now then so be it. Plus, I think it looks fine…

    • http://wiiublog.com Jared

chill bro the reason there not parallel is so its easyer to reach i dont think they will loss sells can u people have faith in nintendo that they know what there doing this new controller look simple and leap padish this new one looks educated.

    • http://wiiublog.com Jared

the old controller is what i ment

    • austen

i think its a change for the better i really like analog sticks more than the circle pad’s and i own a 3ds!

    • WiiU

Yes they need to make it a lot neater but I like the analogs better.

  • Yokinoodles

i think that the circle pads are better cause when your p[laying and sliding them really quickly your finger wont slide off but with anologs sticks thiere so high up that when your playing hard core then they fall off and its just disaster

    • Matt

What!? You got that backwards. My finger slides off just from holding forward in OOT3D but on an actual analog stick I could hold it all day.

    • Hi

It’s the exact opposite with me.

  • http://wiiublog.com Jared

I personaly like the new controller It looks easyer for the thumbs to move around and it looks more….. HI-Tech to me i like that.

    • austen

i like it better the pads might be better for control but they slip on my thumbs, and i dislike having to adjust my thumb every 5 seconds when im playing oot 3d

  • BlueHawk007

Now all they need to do is put the right analog stick below the 4 buttons and it’ll be perfect.

Honestly, it still bothers me xD

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc

What’s wrong with it being beside each other?

  • D2K

I don’t know if it is just me but in comparison to the other controller either this new design seems bigger or the screen seems smaller. Anyone else notice that?

    • http://wiiublog.com Jared

looks the same to me but if i had to choose it looks smaller. do u think a smaller screen will help it run in 720p?

    • Kaizar

      I noticed.

I think the controller is bigger to accommodate the crappy god awful Joysticks.

PLEASE BRING BACK THE CIRCLE PADS FOR ARE GAMING EXPERIENCE!

We need Circle Pads for gaming, especially Hardcore gaming.

And the Wii U has too many Hardcore games….to be using crappy Joysticks for Hardcore Gameplay.

      THIRD POWER!

    • zeta

The controller itself was bigger to accommodate the awkward analog placement, this is not any new news, a picture of this controller was already released as the older version of the controller but they changed it to make it smaller and more comfortable because reaching on top of those analog sticks then switching to the buttons was stress.

    • D2K

So you are saying that this controller is actually the older design and the one we have been accustomed to (circle pads) is the newer design?

    • zeta

i’m saying its a possibility as the rumor about the old design is from February, also there was a video showing why the circle pads and button movement would be better for comfort, then we also have the rumor of click-able circle pads which would make the circle pads seem more of the progress and not the analog

    • Kaizar

      YESSSSS!

I hope the rumor’s you said are 100% true.

      I want my Circle Pads!

      SHABLAGOO!

    • http://blaaa josh with the truth

same bring the circle pads or it will be soo uncomfortable

  • R2BDSi

No name change but, the sticks were a must, much better lookin controller than before

  • XZAceXZ

Notice how the sticks resemble more to the GameCube analog sticks rather than the nunchuk´s. Could this mean a glorious return of one of the best analog sticks of all time??? :D

    • Poopman

      I wish

  • leo

glad they took out the circle pads. Looks like a okay setup to me

  • Roo

Well it certainly seems a bit uglier, and a WHOLE lot bigger! There is just so much empty space, it doesn’t appeal as much as the prototype did in terms of looks, but they probably changed it to be more functional, which is really more important.

I just wish they would give it a pattern or something!

  • Trulaw

Analogue sticks are probably the right way to go. Let’s hope they click. And I hope they add Game Cube triggers.

  • Classic Hyper Sonic The Hedgehog A.K.A Rc/AGES

    YES!
    This is what we NEED!
Now I can fully enjoy the controller!

  • Phantom-X

The controller is fine IMO. The only thing that bothers me is the position of the sticks. They are too close to the edges. This may be a little too hard to change from them to the buttons, and also they it seems that it would be harder to hold. I hope they put them back to where the Circle Pads were

  • SEGAGIGA

It’s shorter but longer than the original design.

I’ve made an up to scale cardboard mock up based on the new patent diagram to see how things will become accessible. The revision made sense, it’s more ergonomic and intuitive now. It doesn’t look as good as the original but it will function much better.

The analog and D-pad placement reminds me of the GameCube controller (left side).

  • Luigi

Boo. Old way is much better. Fewer buttons and it looked better. And Slide Pads kick ass

    • Kaizar

I just want the Circle Pads back.

I don’t care about the rest.

I’m a Gamer, who needs actual good controls for gaming……it’s only practical.

      MINT BERRY CRUNCH!

    • http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/16a07c1e06c4010a42f31cc4d1a0702d.png ABEzilla116

IMO you’re all wrong. You have to try out the new Xbox 360 controller. Its a new silver one and the Analogs are better than anything I’ve ever used.

    • http://WIIUblog COWS SAY QUACK

      @ABEzilla116 Pic please.

    • Kaizar

Well, I heard the Wii U circle pads are way way more better than the 3DS circle pads.

I heard it around E3 2011, I think David might have said it.

But I do want to see a pic of what talk about ABEzilla116, it sounds impressive….and like cows say quack, I got’s to see it.

      WE THE BEST!

    • Captain Falcon

@Luigi Care to explain why? That’s your opinion; it doesn’t mean yours is better.

    • WEEGEE

      LUIGI’S IS BETTER

  • dsan2

hate the useless squares. hate them

    • Csaw

How are they useless. You don’t even know what they do. It could be important for the controller to work.

  • Josh

Is it just me, or is the screen smaller?

    • JMAN

      or is the controller fatter?

  • Sophang

It looked a lot better in its first form I think

  • Nintendega/DodsonReview

I, personally, think that Circle Pads are harder to grip. I like the changes and think that “traditional” analog sticks are the better way to go. Keep it up Nintendo!!!

    • Blakexd9

      Yes

  • Connor Russell

Looks great! I like how it looks a lot sleeker and the joysticks are more like the nuchuck one. And what’s that square button under the d-pad?

  • Ryuji

It looks great to me. Very stylish and functional! I hope it’s got good ergonomics though.

  • Wolf

    CONTROL STICKS!? F*CK YES.

  • Poopman

I like it, but the control sticks need to be pushed back to where they where.

    • FLUDD

Trust me, it’s going to feel better this way. (thats what she said a ha ha)

  • http://WIIUblog COWS SAY QUACK

Wow….David you really step up you game in this site.

OT I really like the controller , I’m getting a 50″ t.v when this comes out.

  • http://nintendo3ds.wikia.com J. Severe

While this doesn’t look /that/ bad, the one at E3 2011 seemed better. But we won’t know how it feels until someone tries it out. Bring on E3 2012!

  • Ness

Those analog sticks are fucking awful. Even /my/ stick would be more comfortable to use on the controller than those. smh

  • zeta

    http://www.nintendoenthusiast.com/evolution-of-the-wii-u-controller/

This are the reasons why they should not go back to the older setup with the analog, the analogs are popular but definitely wouldn’t suit the tablet-shaped Wii U controller, i personally would not like them to go back to the analog setup, its true that people are used to them but they can be really uncomfortable even for people that use them everyday, i use the PS3 ones quite often and have never really liked them, especially in shooting games, plus due to the movement necessary you tend to be destroying the analog sticks to play those games.

  • Phazer Effect

The sticks better be clicky, if not its waste of time.

    • gaming anal-ist

rubbing tummy smacking head controls no one really needs clicky analogs is soooooooo sony

    • Trulaw

@Phazer Effect Yes, click functionality is very important for a number of games.

    • WEEGEE

      WEEE GOT BUTTONS, NUFFF SAID

    • abcdefgh

very important for”" A NUMBER OF GAMES “”could you please prove your opinion as fact for us please CONSIDERING IV NEVER EVERE REQUIRED A CLICK-ABLE STICK TO PLAY ANY VIDEO GAME IN EXISTENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THERE IS NOT ONE VIDEO GAME ON THE EARTH THAT >>>>REQUIRES THIS

    • Trulaw

@abcdefgh I never said “required”, just “very important”. Perhaps even that may be an exaggeration, but there are a number of games that because of their fast and/or precision nature, it is generally better if we can keep our thumbs on the sticks as much as possible, so that means that if we don’t have analogue sticks/pads that can click, players will only have 4 buttons*(the shoulder ones) rather than 6 (well using a position that’s “natural” for our hands) that are immediately accessible well also maintaining uninterrupted use of the sticks. Yes there is the gyroscope and accelerometer but if the controller’s motion sensitive functionality is like what we have on current hardware I’m not sure that it will be fast or precise enough to make a very good alternative for some of the fast and/or precision types of games that would normally make use of the click function. However, there is also the possibility of using finger/thumb “acrobatics” to compensate for the lack off the click functionality.

    • Phazer Effect

Look people. the reason I say it would be a HUGE waste of Analogs is that if the new ones don’t click, they have the EXACT SAME function as circle pads. If Nintendo decided to add analogs it would only be a benefit to have them click. Do you guys know how clunky the controls feel for Black Ops using the Classic Controller? Also Nintendo has never used clickable analogs so I think its about damn time. Analog triggers would also be great especially on racing games.

  • gaming anal-ist

no doubt there pin sharp like chuck like wavebird like gc pad LOL @ dualshock 1/2/3 and the wet tissue paper analog sticks of dead zone in a dummy place at the bottom of the pad

snes copy with added dead zone crappy analogs sony move on seriously

  • Kaizar

Okay, this was clearly the crappy prototype before E3 2K11.

The joysticks are too far away from the touch screen.

And the Start & Select button couldn’t be reach with the right thumb for even us right handed people.

And the Circle Pad design would be perfect for both Left Handed & us Right Handed people.

    SHABLAGOO!

    WE THE BEST! FOREVER!

    • bill

Why would they remove the Wii U logo?

    • Kaizar

Why would they add the Wii U logo?

      BITE MY SHINY METAL ASS!

    • zeta

if the analog one was the prototype then they could have removed it because of the law problem they were having at the time which would have forced them to change the name from Wii U, also just looking at it would tell you that the circle pad one looks more finished the analog one has a lot of awkwardly placed buttons and unnecessary squares (probably because its the earlier dev kit so those could be for some kind of modding or just have the screws beneath)

    • bill

I like the circle pad version too, you don’t have to be so mean. :(

    • bill

      Turns out you were wrong.

  • Meelow

I love the new design, analog sticks where a must for FPS’s, etc.

    • MetroidFTW

      go home

    • MetroidFTW

But I agree its a good design

  • Samuel

It looks ugly if you ask me. Move the start and select buttons to the previous places even if they are unreachable. Remove those silly squares and make the home button what it used to be.

  • FLUDD

    Looks much more comfortable.

  • Wildman

    ANALOG STICKS!!!!!!

  • sam765

It looks much slickier and more mature with the circle pad.

    • austen

i dont think circle pads look more mature, i think nintendo switched it so that they could get more hardcore gamers to buy it, cause i dont think hardcore gamers really think the circle pads are to great

  • Craig E

I really do not like this… Circle Pads are nice, these are a step back and will make thumbs hurt more again. Nintendo is really alienating their current fanbase, just to focus on narrow-minded people, on top of the patent for the new club nintendo system. I’ve never been unhappy with them until now.

  • Aidan_Vladimir

That little square to the left of the controller underneath the D-Pad could be a thumb scanner or that vitality sensor.

  • Waterboy11

As long as the analogs aren’t as “flimsy” as the playstation 3 I’m ok with it….. it still looks kinda stupid sticking out like that:)

  • HTsuna27X

    i want the 3ds joystick :D

  • Nemui

I like the design a lot. It looks big, but it’s still better than having a tiny controller. The sticks are looking easier for the thumb, although I’d loved to see the Circle pads on the controller. But I’m also fine with this change^^

    • MetroidFTW

They changed to using analogue stick because they can click whereas the circle pads cant, I dont see why they cant make the circle pads click but yeah…

  • Derpy Hooves

Mother of Celestia, it looks uglyyyy!!

    The old one was better

they dont show the multiplayer until the last couple minutes

No, if you look when the guy on the right wins you can see its a classic controller pro, thats why he has a wire going into his pocket, but if you look the at 7:55 the charger wire (im guessing its the charger) is going into the bottum of the controller (pointing towards you) and there is a flap that can flap open (I think its a flap) that is protecting a USB plug type socket. hmmm…. of course that is a prototype version so the controller probably wasnt the final nor near the final version of itself…

    • MetroidFTW

      * look at the left guy for the charging thing, the guy that loses

  • Atisha

Maybe they where discussing the OLD controller
on Twitter and now everyone thinks it’s the new one

    • Ricardo

You just saved me an hour worth of commenting.

All these people here would be SILLY to think that this is the final version. The picture above us was from Twitter. Why? Because the developer OBVIOUSLY knew that Nintendo would not care if he posted the prototype version, so he did it. Shortly, he got busted and had to take it down. WHY?? Because if if the controller was a prototype/older version, Nintendo does not want ANYONE to find out how this controller looked, and it looks pretty damn ugly (the older one).

Now do you understand, people? David has you all confused. Ill say it one more time, THE PICTURE ABOVE WAS THE OLDER VERSION OF THE WII U CONTROLLER, NOT THE FINAL. Honestly, you people must be really gullible to believe this. :/

    • WEEGEE

      YAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

    • SleepyGuyy

That makes a lot of sense, i hope Nintendo doesn’t screw up. This controler will be less comfortable & less acurate. The only reason i can see them doing this is to make it thinner…. which is bad for actual gameplay as it is less comfortable. It also means the groves in the back are lessened (crap shoulder buttons, and uncomfortable grip).

  • nintendo person

    It looks BAD ASS!

  • SleepyGuyy

David… you seem over confident. I see nothing in the actual picture to convince me that this is real at all, in anyway. The form factor is now less comfortable, there are TWO charging ports (3DS & standard electronics one on the front, with a third mystery cable on the back), the analog sticks are very close to the edges, and are raised from the surface (circle pads were used because , due to placment, your fingers must be closer to the surface to easily reach & switch between buttons). The face buttons are a cheap, flattened version. It’s actually a little bit bigger , and the buttons are much farther apart. The analog sticks themselves are small (would be less acurate). The fact that it is thinner means there is little space for two sets of shoulder pads. This is wrong on so many levels, looks thrown together in several aspects, and is hopefully fake.

    • Ricardo

      Read my comment above please.

The controller picture above us was the PROTOTYPE, NOT THE FINAL VERSION.

      GOOD DAY.

    • SleepyGuyy

I posted this , assuming the role of the average reader. The average reader thinks David is right.

    • SleepyGuyy

Sorry , i meant, i posted this FOR the average reader

  • SleepyGuyy

I UNDERSTAND NOW. AND SO SHOULD YOU. THIS PICTURE IS AN OLD PROTOTYPE , BEFORE E3 2011. THIS IS A CRAPPY EARLY MODEL, AND HAS BEEN IMPROVED SINCE (see E3 2011 model). NINTENDO IS SMART, STICK-LOVERS HAVE NO FAITH. SLIDE PADS ARE AWESOME.

    • SleepyGuyy

AND THE CONTROLLER FOR THE FINAL PRODUCT WILL BE COMFORTABLE

    • Big E

      You scare me.

    • JMAN

honestly, im happy with both designs, i guess we’ll find out at E3

    • Polykleitos

You’re wrong. It was mislabeled. The leaked image is the new one. The fact that it has grips on the back and analog sticks, as well as more ergonomic button and d-pad placement is proof enough.

    • Ricardo

You’re misled though. Alright, hear me out.

There was a patent back a few months ago that showed the controller above us. The buttons are the same, the layout is the same as the one above us. HOWEVER, the article said that the controller was ORIGINALLY supposed to have anolog sticks, but didn’t.

So you are telling me that Nintendo made a prototype of the controller, made a more efficient one (E3 2011) and went back to the prototype? I think not.

However, feel free to disagree. :P this is just my two cents.

  • Sposer

I’m not sure about you guys, but I’m personally in love with this new design! It looks super comfortable. I didn’t have any problems with the circle pads in the original design, but I’m happy that Nintendo is sticking with analogue sticks in their consoles. Something I was concerned with, however, was the fact that the four face buttons were located directly under the right circle pad in the original design. That looked a bit uncomfortable to me. Now it appears that they are diagonal to the right analogue stick, Which seems just right. I’m also happy with the placement of the start and select buttons. The only thing that bugs me are the weird little rubber squares… What are they?

    • MadCrain

      They probably hide the screws

    • zeta

it might look like that but if you actually try out your finger placement with a hardcover book you will see they are not the movement from the high to diagonal low is very tiring, now with the circle pads you can either have the tip of your fingers on them and then lower your fingers in the middle to easily reach the buttons or you can simply play with the middle of your fingers at all times and slide them up or down to reach either the pads or the buttons.

  • Ace

Thank you lord for no circle pads!

  • LaserK

wow. This looks bigger than the one shown at E3.Rounder too.I could eat pizza on this thing lol
I’m not sure how to feel about the analogs. They look a bit too close the corner. And just when the circle pads where growing on me :/ And those square things are…?
I hope this isn’t the final design. At least make it smaller Nintendo?

  • Pac-Man1096

The image was posted on Twitter because the poster assumed Nintendo would not get mad if he were to show the prototype controller. However, the picture was since removed because apparently has was caught and/or realized that he should have not done so. I have a bit of evidence as well…

When sites such as NintendoLife posted the news regarding the patents that showcased the Wii U controller with analog sticks, the articles were titled things like “Nintendo had originally planned to include analog sticks on the Wii U controller”. Why would suddenly Nintendo go back to their original ideas?

Also, news keeps appearing about more Wii U controller patents, like how the Wii U controller and Wii Remote would connect. These patents as well showcase the Wii U controller’s design like that of E3 2011.

Lastly, wasn’t there news about again another patent that suggested the Wii U controller would have clickable Circle Pads? Nintendo themselves said Circle Pads work better than anolog sticks which is why I had assumed Nintendo kept them there (as well as for comfort).

Ricard, SleepyGuyy and I understand this.

    • Pac-Man1096

I appologize. Ricardo, SleepyGuyy, and I.

    • D2K

I think you pretty much summed up everything. Nothing else needs to be said on the matter.

    • Ricardo

      ;) You got it, Pac-Man1096!

    • George Tirebiter

I’ll say I honestly didn’t hear anything about this being a prototype prior to the comments on this page, but you’ve done the best job of conveying why it could be the truth.

I’d also completely forgotten those patents with sticks predating the nunchuckified (feel free to use that adjective) circle pads. If the controller come E3 has circle pads, though, we all need to be ready for the return of complaints about how sticks offer more degrees of precision than pads. It was a common one with the 3DS, especially in the wake of the Vita.

Don’t misconstrue that last comment as some kind of fanboy attack. I own a 3DS but not a Vita.

    • Ricardo

@George – Alright, hear me out.

There was a patent back a few months ago that showed the controller above us. The buttons are the same, the layout is the same as the one above us. HOWEVER, the article said that the controller was ORIGINALLY supposed to have anolog sticks, but didn’t.

So, Nintendo made a prototype of the controller, made a more efficient one (E3 2011) and went back to the prototype? I think not.

However, feel free to disagree. :P this is just my two cents.

    • Co-Wink-Key-Dink inc.

      I understand this too

  • Microjack5

We have to think here; there have been multiple dev kits for the Wii U, and there is a possibility that the controller design varied in each one. So the question is, which version of the controller is this?

  • Mo

I am fine with both the circle pads and the anologs. The controller does look pretty darn ugly in that picture though. I don’t have any issues with the circle pad, it’s just they dont feel like they give you a good view in FPS. The anologs make it more easy to look around. Circle pads make the controller look more neat and clean.

  • MetroidFTW

Doesnt the button under the d-pad look kinda similar to a blackberry cursor thing? it would be cool if it was a cursor type thing for the Wii U!

  • die dualshock die

could we stop please with BUTTON WORSHIP adding buttons and calling it an innovation or cool or required is total nonsense click-able sticks is only called core by idiots the endless adding of buttons is not wanted required or core its a dumb sell out and a outdated way of designing a controller

oh its a dual shock lets add buttons pretend we didn’t and make out its a CORE click stick that is a hilarious joke and only sony fans would defend this !!!

ADDING MORE BUTTONS IS NOT THE FUTURE INNOVATION IS the wii u pad and the wii remote plus with nunchuck can control any core game to a level a dualshock or xpad never can no amount of buttons changes that A BUTTONS A BUTTON NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS

motion point and touchscreens etc REDUCE THE NEED FOR BUTTONS THANK GOD

so stop button worshiping and saying games need them that is total bollox

the only people that want click analogs are dumb as Sony ms fans who want every action in a game to be AUTO via a button motion point and touch screen take game play to the REAL LEVEL DO THE ACTION YOUR SELF not press once and watch it AUTOMATICALLY TAKE PLACE that’s semi interaction think heavy rain the destruction of gaming

click sticks no thanks its just a button

    • Tak

Yes, I agree, that simply adding buttons is not necessary and motion controls and touch screen not only reduce the need of buttons but also increase the level of control in games, but click sticks are more than just buttons, they add more functions that you can control simultaneously.

And the automation in games makes me sick!!! SO SICK THAT I TOO WANT TO YELLL!!!!!

    • Belinni

I think it’s better to have a clickable stick because as you say it counts as a button. And what do we play all our games with? Buttons. If we had less buttons then we’d have less control of the game.

With the clickable stick we’d have one more button option that game developers could use to allow us to make the character run, crouch, do a little dance, whatever and save the actual buttons for more important or interesting stuff. More buttons = more abilities and features a game can bring.

Motion games worked well (as evidence from No More Heroes, Skyward Sword, and Red Steel) but at the same time the games are limited because it has not yet been perfected. Either way, do you know what I think is innovation right now? A mix of motion control, buttons and a kick ass screen.

    • Joe Shmo

I love how people get so worked up about things that are so insignificant. I don’t care whether or not they’re clickable and I don’t care if they’re sticks or circle pads. Nintendo has been in the business a long time and I’m sure the decisions they make will be good ones and their console will be great.

  • Majora’s Incarnation

I feel like the analog sticks would be too difficult to control.

  • Alex Atkin UK

I don’t get why so many people are anti-stick.

Nintendo were the first to bring back the analog stick on modern consoles. The N64 had one, the Gamecube had two, the Wii had one, so it would have made no sense at all to drop them from the WiiU.

You also have to think that this way Nintendo can release Gamecube games digitally which can be played entirely on the controller screen without it feeling wrong.

Analog sticks give you MORE accuracy than the slide pads as the fact you are tilting them means get more analog range for the same amount of physical space. A comparable slide pad would never work as it would have to move about three times as far.

The two things I HATE about the 3DS are the slide pad and the fact the touch screen has that stupid border around it. I’m so glad the WiiU controller has neither of those problems.

In fact if it had the slide pad I was seriously thinking I wouldn’t buy it, because it would ruin the control you need for quick aiming in FPS.

If you do not believe me, try playing the 3DS then try the PS Vita. The controls work a thousand times better on PS Vita, which is a damn shame as Modnation Racers doesn’t come close to being as much fun as Mario Kart 7.

Its just a shame than due to the clamshell design its unlikely the 3DS XL could have analog sticks.

    • Raven The Great!

Look, bro, there’s a difference in shape between the Wii U controller and the other controllers, and if you take that into account, the Slide pad would work much better- just adjust so that you’ll have a better grip with it and there you go.

  • http://3dsforums.com/members/themightyfludd-514/ supermajora1

It looks to wide. I hope they release a regular controller without the screen.

    • Raven The Great!

WITHOUT THE SCREEN!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? REMOVE THE THING THE WII U TRIED SO HARD TO ADVERTISE FOR?

  • Han Solo

I disapprove of every change they made from the original version.

  • Tails the Foxhound

    I miss my circle pads… u_u

  • Raven The Great!

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! MY CIRCLE PADDDDSSS!!!

  • Kid Icarus

If you watch the leaked trailer of rayman, they were still using the old controller

  • Kurei

Hey guys. Some more info about the Wii-U. Maybe David will see this, maybe not.

    http://thewiiu.com/topic/3579-ubisoft-employee-leaks-a-massive-load-of-wii-u-info/

Copypasta a section of the info.

    >Nintendo asked Ubisoft to release a high number of titles at the launch
    >Ubisoft’s line-up is this: Rayman Legends, Assassin’s Creed 3, Just Dance 4
    >Killer from outer space will be aviable a few weeks after launch
    >Lots of Tech demos will be sent to Ubisoft, just like Zelda’s one of the last E3
    >They showed Ubisoft a lot of new features, some we still have to see
    >Graphic card will be a Radeon HD 6770
    >After Dream he went to eat (???)
    >A lot of Dev-kits were sent to Ubisoft
    >One of them was 4GHz
    >The 6GHz one was from 3 months ago
    >Rayman Legends will come out on Vita as well, just like Rayman Origins
    >Xbox 8′s graphic card will be more powerful than Wii-U’s
    >However, Ubisoft isn’t developing on Microsoft’s new console yet

Not sure if its fake. But on the other hand a 6770 does make sense because of its streaming video capabilities. However it contradicts the old rumors around it being based on the R700 series.

Also that 6GHZ is not what you think it is.

Quote from a programmer at Gaf

“According to one of the IBM engineers working on the project, the CPU was seemingly designed for clockspeeds between 1 and 4GHz. Or more precisely: Individual elements of the CPU were designed for clockspeeds in that range – if the execution units are clocked at 4GHz, the eDRAM would be running at 2GHz and the bus at 1GHz for example. I wouldn’t expect the CPU to actually run at 4GHz by the way, the chip was simply designed to be capable of running at that speed.”

    • Kurei

      @Tak

The Radeon 4870 card was a stand-in card for dev units or I hear. It was not necessarily the main card of the console.

Also, the Power7 CPU have a turbo feature, which allows the CPU to boost itself when necessary.

“here is also a special TurboCore mode that can turn off half of the cores from an eight-core processor, but those 4 cores have access to all the memory controllers and L3 cache at increased clock speeds. This makes each core’s performance higher which is important for workloads which require the fastest cores possible. TurboCore mode can reduce “software costs in half for those applications that are licensed per core, while increasing per core performance from that software.”"

  • Kurei

Also some more copypasta. This time someone from Gaf(where most of the news/rumors/leaks about Wii-U come from).

“LOL so there’s even pics out now?

Oh well, it seems I was too late to give any kind of interesting news since the only worthwhile one got already out (analog sticks instead of slide pads).

But hey, we read and speculated about fuck all for weeks so I’ll lay it down anyway just because:

    He’s working on a port.
Game won’t look better, using the same assets as PS360, :(
going to implement AA, a “neat filter” (?) and advanced particles effects only if they’ve got enough time (it’s supposed to be a launch game) and budgets allows it: it’s not in the cards at this moment although it’d be possible.
I liked the idea on how they’re using the screen but it seems obvious honestly.
    I don’t like these games, I think they’re crap.

He doesn’t know how far you can take the tablet to stream games.
The platform is incredibly welcoming from a dev pow, their team is much smaller than what you usually have to port a game. They’re a B team porting an A team’s game.
They’re building the same kind of online as ps360, so that’s reassuring.
The tablet is amazing and comfortable. They’re not implementing Wii Remote controls.
me’ “fuck that!” him: “the tablet is awesome man!’ me: “I hate those fucking slide pads like on 3DS” him’ ” they weren’t like that and anyway they’ve actually become analog sticks for a while now”
Me “is the system more fuckin’ poweful then current gen?!” my mate: “of course it is” :D
me “holy shit!” him’ “don’t get too excited now” -_-
His pub has a big game coming for Wii U which hasn’t been announced yet.
The console is still called Wii U.

So yeah, nothing to see here sorry! At least I didn’t tease shit or anything :)
And this is all I have, not holding back stuff for the future and I don’t have multiple sources ahah
If the Wii U ends up being an it-can-play-Crysis 4 machine then I’m not to be held responsible for these infos, I gave what I was fed. I’ve known the guy for 6 years and I know 100% is working on Wii U.

    ps
Yay, surgery went well and I’m alive :P
    pps
Lol, this reads like a Sponge rumour post, I’m kinda ashamed of that but I thought you guys wanted me to post it anyway rather than not. Right?”

    • Kurei

Hope someone reads this or passes it on to David.

And no the person saying the stuff about Wii-U on Gaf did not state which game they were working on. But he did say it was not Darksiders 2.

    • Kurei

Oh and I don’t know the legitimacy of either of my posts. All rumors as usual as Nintendo NDA is quite strict and iron-clad.

    • http://blaaa josh with the truth

the wiiu wii not use the randon 6770 it will use something stronger if they can they wii use the randon 6770 if they have to but they want to use something more powerful

    • Tak

IBM POWER7′s frequencies range from 2.4 GHz to 4.25 GHz. 6GHz is pretty childish claim, and seems to be a dream of some body who’s not that much interested on processor technology. The GHz doesn’t realy mean that much novadays, but 6Hhz would mean unpractical amount of heat and energy consumption for a game console, and any console mannufacturer wouldn’t choose something quite THAT risky -> more risky than RRod. Not to mention expensive. Adding more cores would be much easier, more efficient and less risky.

6770 sounds more plausible, but if they decide to not use the R700 GPU that they have been modifying for a long time, it would make much more sense to use something mid-high range from 7000-series, because they are more cost, heat and electricity efficient(Haven’t checked if thats true though, usually is). By modifying their own chip in collaboration with AMD, they could come up with a chip thats better suited for Wii U in particular, and thus very efficient solution. That just takes time and money, and Nitendo has had both.

No need to post that kind of mash up to front page.

    • D2K

I have a novel idea. Why don’t we wait for Nintendo to tell us what the specs of the Wii U are? I mean, they are the company making the system aren’t they?

      *facepalm*

It never ceases to amaze me on how people go to incredible lengths to broadcast information that is completely unsubstantiated. Nintendo already told us what graphics card is going to be used for the Wii U. It is a custom ATI Radeon 4870 based on the R770 series, not a 6770. Nintendo has not made any release to the public stating that any change of hardware has taken place and it makes absolutely no sense for Nintendo to put a more expensive card/less capable card in the Wii U.

The fact that the tag line of “XBOX 8′s graphics card will be more powerful than the Wii U’s” SCREAMS this is 100% fake and was posted by a Microsoft fanboy whom is upset that the graphics card NINTENDO told us they are using is cheaper and more powerful than the one being used by Microsoft. End of story. Nothing to see here. Move along.

These next two weeks can’t go fast enough for me.

    • Ice Climbers

@D2K Then why don’t you follow your own advice. Wait until E3.

You said to wait until E3, then you said the old specs and claimed that they are going to be the final specs. That completely contradicts itself.

Either way, its pretty obvious that the final Wii U will be better than the old specs released by Nintendo at E3 2011. However, I dont know if it truly is better than the old specs or not. I’m going to wait until E3 2012, where all of this will be settled. I’m guessing that the final version of the Wii U will be more powerful than the old specs, but I’m going to wait and find out.

These two weeks are going to really drag by.

    • die dualshock die

dont be upset if the cpu clock is only 1.6GHZ

system on chip with multipul broadway cores or maybe a power7 4 x core ether cpu is 45nm and eather could be 4xcore broadway 2 type cpus are tiny at 45nm and 4 of them could fit in the area of 1 broadway and clock as high as 2.0ghz and ringbus speed peaks at 800mhz

this could be 800 bus 800 gpu and 1.6 to 2.4 ghz cpus power7 or powerpc 400 range broadway 2

    • D2K

@Ice Climbers: I’m not sure I follow you here. My whole point was what is the point of speculating what the specs are when the company itself (Nintendo) hasn’t told you otherwise? I know you are intelligent enough to understand that so I don’t really see the point of your comment other than trying to take a shot at me for some reason.

So I guess I have to discern what should already be apparent.

For the people that are so impatient that anything that says ‘Wii U’ they jump all over it whether they even check to see if the article is true or not or if it makes any sense at all I say, stop it. Don’t waste your time. For the people whom are patient or can tell when stories are complete BS, carry on.

@ supermajora1: I guess I have to bring this out one more time.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcnsG11MRE8

Obviously if Nintendo is now using a Radeon 6770 it is a step DOWN from the 4870 and it would be beyond ridiculous for Nintendo to do that.

    • Kurei

      @D2K.

Nintendo has not released tech specs since the Gamecube and have de-emphasized this over the years. They have never officially released the tech specs for DS, 3DS or Wii, and not likely to do it now.

Nintendo has NEVER said they are using a 4870. Read: NEVER. That has been pure rumor and speculation. The only thing Nintendo partially confirmed which was IBM was the CPU. And IBM did not even say Power7. They said it was based off the chip that was inside the Watson, and everyone assumed Power7 which the is inside that thing.

There were RUMORS of it being based on the R700 cards. FYI, dev kits ship with ‘stand-by’ cards, that is, cards that are in relative power to what the aim is. So until they finalise the design of the GPU chip, that particular card would be used by devs to produce games.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING hardware wise has been confirmed by NIntendo, apart from the controller.

NO GPU, NO CPU, NO RAM.

    • Kurei

      @D2K.

If you guys did not know, the rumored Xbox code name is Xbox 8. 720>Durango>8(to match what Microsoft has in store for WIndows 8).

Also it is a foregone conclusion that PS4 and Xbox 8 will be more powerful.

That everyone knows and should be indisputable by now.

    • Kurei

      @D2k

You and others might want to try and read what the 6770 is capable of before you says its a weaker card.

The 6770 is more modern and fully supports the features od Directx 11. It is also an upgrade from the 5770 with its advanced video functions.

What does the Nintendo Wii-U do? Stream video to the controller.

Dismissing the rumor complete is idiotic. If not entirely true it is partially.

If you didn’t know it is a combination of lots of other ‘confirmed’(by devs and not Nintendo) rumors with a couple thrown in that cannot be verified.

The GPU wont even resemble the 6770 in the end as it will be heavily customised with Nintendo putting in things that the hardware can do automatically(Nintendo seems to want emphasis on lighting).

  • Snowmadboy

Don’t worry, as far as I’m concerned, 3rd party designers will be working on Wii U controllers in all shapes and sizes.

People wanted analog sticks over circle pads, we got it (& likely clickable at that). Nintendo is just addressing some of the gaming community’s concerns with the controller.
