A direct comparison between the Wii U’s old and updated tablet controller

Want to have a better understanding of the Wii U’s updated controller? We saw a glimpse through a leaked photo, but after the break there’s a few images (similar to the one above) that provides a direct comparison.

    Oh wow…not that I don’t like it, but Nintendo should have at least made the screen wider along with the controller…but I’ll still enjoy it either way :D

    Its funny, that is not a new controller, its an older version. The circle pads are the new one. How do i know this? The first controller with the “joysticks” was patented way before the one with circle pads. The one with the control sticks is much bigger (as in width). It also as the the white squares, but the new (circle pads) is smaller and does not need the little squares because they are already incorporated.

      I’m not starting false rumors I’m just looking at this logically, according to IGN one of the squares was the NFC chip.

      It’s Logic that as technology advances the hardware shrinks right..? For example the first iPod to the 4th gen. The Anolog stick controller is much wider and from the back it is much “fatter” which would make sence.

    If you think about it, the controler looks alot more comfortable, but it got bigger soo, I don’t know :/

    eh, both are great, i don’t think it’ll make much of a difference. what i’m most interested in is knowing whether or not it will take batteries or (fingers crossed) be rechargeable

      It’s rechargeable and has it’s own cradle it sits on when you’re not using it… or when you’re playing still games on it. It has a charger on the bottom where it sits in there and two metal squares like the 3DS.

    Why can’t we have both? One half of produced Wii Us could have the original controller, and the other half the new (better) one. Or, since how extremely unlikely that is, if the Wii U supports more than 1 controller, then have both available for the same price (a lot) at retail.

    An inch doesn’t make much difference to me, but im glad to see analogue back. I just want to know the price. It’s dumb that they wont price it at e3. i hope it gets released later in the year, i want them to have time to add cool stuff.

    aw man, it looks wide.
    I never tried the Wii U controller before but most people say that it’s quite comfortable. But from what I see, it’s gonna be hard on my poor little fingers.

    And like I said, I never tried the WiiU controller before. So this is just my blunt opinion.

      Seems like it got wider on the inside, not the outside, it should feel relatively the same as before. Relatively because the sticks are no longer directly above the D-pad and face buttons, the sticks instead of the circles, and the slightly different shoulder buttons.

      i doubt anyones hand would be too small to hold it. remember you hold it near the buttons not the bottom =)

    No more circle pads, sniffle. Well, that’s probably the right move for the majority just us minorities being slightly disappointed as with everything else.

    Will these images be in 3D if I can find some glasses?

    So glad they moved the select & start buttons. That might have been okay for the 3DS, but it would not be cool for it to happen on such a huge controller.

    I think I like the original design better because it doesn’t look as wide and ugly. Although the “newer” one does have actual analog sticks, and the circle pads shown at E3 2011 makes me a bit worried. Who’s to say even that’s the final product? If not, hopefully it will, you know, have analog sticks without being ugly.

    And another thing.

    Nintendo, PLEASE release it in multiple colors and don’t change it after it’s been released. I was annoyed when the Wii and the remotes were only one color for four years and then finally release them with Wii motion plus after everyone already owns one.

    That doesn’t match the photo (in terms of dimensions) , and besides it was an older clunky model from before E3 2011.

    Why would they remove circle pads. They are better in every way, including comfort & accuracy. And to those who say the 3DS pads are less accurate than sticks, Dont compare them to fully sized XBOX or PS3 sticks. Compare the 3DS to other compact devices… Such as the PSVita’s sticks. Then you will realize.. the red outline is worse in one (of the 3) ways.

    It’s kinda weird to have grips on a tablet like controller. Maybe they should’ve made the whole thing have an arch at the back, by golly that would look awesome.
